Wednesday, June 17, 1931

We where all at Henry’s today for lunch dinner & lunch.  Emil was helping too.  But they broke a piece on the binder, so they had to stopped at 3:30.  We helped to clean the summer kitchen.  This evening Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stopped here on there way to Ike Napier’s to a party, we where invited but didn’t go.  It is Ike’s birthday.

Sunday, June 14, 1931

Today is Pinic [sic] in Floraville & one at the Round Prarie [sic] Church, on the hill.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stayed at Hecker all night, ready for church this morning.  We where at there place for dinner & lunch.  Hy. Armstutz stopped when he came home from the ball game.  Ben Rausch stopped & invited us all to come to the barn dance tonight at Webers, to surprize [sic] him on his birthday.  So we all went, it was mostly all old people there.  Sthiel & Herzog furnished musci [sic].  Papa & Rosalia went to Waterloo Church this morning, we went to Hecker, it was out in a hurry, no sermon & low mass, because he tought [sic – thought] the people where tired from the pinic [sic].

Thursday, June 4, 1931

Today is Corpus Christi, & also Henry Birkner’s birthday & Marcella Ettling’s too.  Rosalia & Bertille went to church this morning.  Henry & Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here for lunch.  They made 2 stacks of hay so far, but still have some more to make.  Today is a big day at Belleville, all the stores close at noon, there is School Picnic, a few schools together.

It rained a little this morn.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here this afternoon for lunch.  Lucinda Eichenseer brought us some flowers from Mamie this morn.  This afternoon there where some school kids here with cards, chances to win, bed spread, quilt, tea set, gas or coal range, & other articles, 10¢ a chance, we didn’t take any.  Rosalia & Aunt Mary where by Mrs. Rennecker a while.  Bertille & Rosalia went to church to-night & took that table scarf along & gave it to Mrs. Joe Braun.  Mrs. Rennecker birthday is today, Klotz’s & G. Wagners where there, they had ice cream.

Thursday, May 28, 1931

This morning we finished our truck patch for this week, then Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came & then we went to Belleville all day.  We ordered our Belleville Paper, that the lady took us through the printing shop.  We all got weighed, Aunt Mary 168 lbs., Uncle Fred 152, Papa 165, Rosalia, 149, Bertille 112.  Today is Frances Kern’s birthday.  Joseph Huber Jr. has purchased a Chrysler.  Last Thurs. night Edwin Wachtel gave a dance at the brick House.  Rev. Fr. Odillo Eichenseer off Chicago spent a day last Sat. with Anton Eichenseer,  & Sun. at Ruma he celebrated his 25th yr. priest, the relation where all present, & they had served dinner in the Hall for 200 people.  Mrs. Charles Rausch of Belleville sold her farm where Ed. Schinder lives on, a lake will be made on the farm.  Red Bud ball team played with Hecker on there grounds here, & defeated them by a score of 2 to 1.  Smithton Jr. team played Hecker Jr. team here Sun. the score was 10 to 9 in favor of Smithton.  Frances Schilling was home last Sun. visiting parents.  George Neff is on the sick list, he is my Osie’s [? last word unclear].  Ed. Parker’s barn is nearly finished now, it costs between $3 & $4,000.  John Roth sold some of his land to George Roth is son.

Papa & Rosalia went to Belleville this morning with our 2 hogs.  They left about 5:30 got $6.40 a lb for them took them to Streck’s, at Belleville.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here for lunch this afternoon.  Papa went out this morning to Henry’s to help him with the hay.  He was there for dinner, lunch & supper.  Johnny Krehres boy was here after school & invited us for a dance at there place.  So this evening we all went there & had a good time, the crowd was rather large. They danced in the barn, Herman Kettler furnished the musci [sic].  Today is Pearl Griffin’s birthday, she is 20 yrs. old today.

Leona was up for 1st mass & Henry at late, today Henry is 27 yrs. old & also there wedding anniversary.  We went out right after church.  Papa went to Belleville to church this morning.  Those that where at Henry’s for chicken dinner where Gus Geodell’s family us, & Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary, after dinner Henry & Frank Birkner’s family came, & Bill Freund, we made ice cream & then cake for lunch.  Oh! Boy, they had 2 gallons ice cream.  Bill was here for supper, afterwords, we went to Breezy Hill too dance, the Melody club furnished the music.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came she went to church.  Henry & Leona went to Breezy Hill too.  They got a reo light from Gus Geodell’s.

Thursday, May 14, 1931

Today is Holiday.  We all went to Waterloo this afternoon, we went out to the clump [dump?] pile, but they haven’t got it gathered up yet in town.  From there we went around Red Bud home, we stopped in at Caldwell’s House, & at the place where Bozzay lived.  We stopped at Red Bud, Papa went to talk with the butcher, & we where talking with Levi Gregson’s family.  Bill was here for supper, in the evening we went along to Waterloo, to get Creses, then went out to Coxey to Greatling’s Hall, Mrs. Pete Keim celebrated her birthday there.  Henry & family, Uncle Fred, Aunt Mary, Papa went to the show, this evening.  Bernice Wagner got the beads, & Ruth Braun the perfume for singing Springtime in the Rockies, Niece Rausch, & another girl each got 25¢.  Mrs. Estelle Stovall got the perfume & Bobby set for calling the loudest for her Husband.  Wilfred Eichenseer got the cigarette case, he got the most cheers.  Leslie Raush also was in that but didn’t get anything.  The name of there play was “Crazy Sister.”

Irene Neff is 18 yrs. old today.  Laverne Keorber, her friend is going to celebrate it at the Brick House by giving a dance Sat night.  Papa found a balloon down by our truck patch today.  It said on there return it & receive a prize, so we mailed it in today, to the St. Louis Arena.  We cleaned our dinning room [sic] this morning, & this afternoon.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came & she went along with us to Pete Dehn’s funeral.  They had supper with us.  Eggs are 13¢ today.

Wednesday, May 6, 1931

Today is Uncle Adam’s birthday.  He is 82 yrs. old.  The dance which was supposed to be this evening in the brick house was posponed [sic] until further notice.  The Hecker baseball team was to give it.  There is a show in the Public Schools Yard tonight Jackson’s Wonder Show.  Rosalia & Bertille went everything free, for a week, only medicine, Indian Herbs $1.00 bottle last night.  He took orders for 9 bottles, he could only sell 10 that the limit, we before it was over, it was to cold. We covered our tomato plants this evening but I don’t think it will freeze.  We moved out little chickens over in the chicken house this morning, it was raining, so we couldn’t turn them out of the coops Jack there.  Papa got a letter today from Mr. Tillman of Belleville the Farm Bureau Advisor, & also a check amounting $1.44 for the repair bill for the Chev. Accident with us & Peter Blank of Freeburg.  We had to lose 20%.  The bill amounted to $1.80, so we received $1.44.
