Raining all morning. Today is Final & Central Ex. [exam] in Waterloo for all 7 & 8 grade pupils. Advertised for a Free Wedding dance at Donahue tonite.

Friday, May 6, 1938

Henry & Leona came left boys here, Bert [Bertille] went along Rosalia’s; & came back with Henry, Leona stayed. Billy [Willis] stayed here all day, fishing boys & Henry went home, caught 8 fish for supper, so far. Bert baked cake, cookies, got 50 lb. flour from Mertz; delivered. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came this eve. Henry & boys came got Billy.

Thursday, May 5, 1938

Bert [Bertille] went to Leo’s, worked garden, cut lawn. Pap went out to Henry’s first this morn; meeting at Waterloo today again. We got 206 chicks out of our hatch, of 264 eggs. broke quite a few. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up, working garden, brought plants along. Mrs. Jake Watchel of Paderborn died, will be buried tomorrow morn.

Wednesday, May 4, 1938

Nice day. Chicks are hatching now, so far got 163. Pap went out to see Geo. Boll; he had lost a horse, while back, cut lawn, planted out flowers, had nice shower rain. Bert [Bertille] went to euchre at Kammler’s given by Ladies Aid; not much crowd 4 tables euchre, 4 pinochle; had 6 points got glass dish, & towel 3rd prize playing bluey. Roland Rausch got the quilt, & Hy. Rittemeyer rug. & me [Bertille] the towel. Attendance prize Mrs. Marylu [unclear] Pickett.

Tuesday, May 3, 1938

Washed ironed, cleaned basement. Pap 60th birthday. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary & Henry & family were all here this eve. had popcorn, cakes, wine. Awful hot these days. Bert [Bertille] got soup bone beef, made soup for dinner. Eggs 17 [cents]. Bert sent a card for Fritz & his German band, to play a song for pap & Henry birthdays.

Monday, May 2, 1938

Bert [Bertille] went to Leo’s, washed ironed etc. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up, fixing screens. Mrs. Al. Geodelle is in Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, operated on head 2 hrs. for tumor; they say. We planted tomatoe & cabbage plants. Hy. Armstutz delivered Chickstarteven [? – unclear]; this eve. Eggs 17 [cents] going up now.

Sunday, May 1, 1938

Went to 7 o’clock mass at Red Bud. Beautiful day. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped awhile after church. We went to Red Bud to the Ministrel [sic] Show given by Holy Name Sodality, not much this afternoon, not many people there; show was pretty good. Bill [Klein] & Bert [Bertille] went to Paderborn to May devotion then went to Floraville dance.

Saturday, April 30, 1938

Rained last nite, pretty good. Bert baked cookies, cake & pie. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came brought tomatoe plants along set out 38 in truck patch; planted pumpkins. John Reheis accessor was here. Fred Weber has a barn dance tonite, called over lines. Emil was here.

Friday, April 29, 1938

Worked garden, cut lawn etc. Harry Wittenauer is plowing, getting ready to plant corn here. Pap went to Waterloo with 19 bu. wheat @ 67 [cents] top price 75 [cents] Eggs 16 [cents]. Pap went to H. Wittenauer’s got 3 pigs $14.00. School pinic [sic] at Blackburn’s today, last day school this year. A lady here selling garments. Seen in Waterloo paper that Geo. Haudrich bought the farm right west of town from Mathilda Lippert & husband of Belleville; Armin Geodelle is now living there. Mr. & Mrs. Jermome AuBuchon of Muryphsboro [sic – Murphysboro] have a baby boy, paper reads; Red Bud.

Thursday, April 28, 1938

Nice cool day, little rain this morn; we went to Leo’s, planted beets, had lunch & went to Belleville from there; Bert [Bertille] got new oxfords white, etc. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up this afternoon; brought cabbage plants, we have now; 112 in truck patch. Received a card to pay $7.00 for tornado Ins. Eggs are 16 [cents] today. Edward Kuess & Verniece Rausch 17 marriage license, were in paper today.
