Sunday, June 16, 1935

Went to Red Bud. Rain all morning. Anton Jaeger of Waterloo, mail carriers dad died at the Hospital, was operated for a growth on the bowels, & was pretty bad. We went to Ruma to see Simpson. Renneckers came over this evening. Wagners are having double birthday celebration, Chas. & Melvin, both this week, all relation were there, about 55 people in all, some houseful; for supper. Rain again this afternoon & evening.

Thursday, June 13, 1935

Henry & family came up 5:30, him & papa went horse trading to Okawville, Red Bud etc; had lunch, dinner & supper. Rain this afternoon & warm. Wagners kids were over. Catholic church pinic [sic] at Dupo, today, we have chances to win $125.00 cash & $30 quilt, 4 times. raffling. Eggs 19¢. Berti bought 1 bar soap & got a chance to win a water set by Mertz store. Rained all nite.

We washed. Henry & Leona went to Belleville took a calf in to Streck’s, boys stayed here, had lunch. Papa made a work brush in shop [? – unclear]. Oliver Kammler & Wagner kids were here, selling different products. Ivo Buehler didn’t have appendix; ulcers in stomach, operated for both, it had busted.

Cleaned chicken house & garden, flowers. Baked bread, etc. Went to Belleville this afternoon. George Wagner borrowed 4 pronk [sic – prong] fork to help make hay by Wm. Harbaugh’s. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were in; had supper here; sewed a little on dress.

Saturday, June 1, 1935

Cloudy this morning. Papa went up to get skim milk. We made out 1 spring [chicken] today; & boy was it good. We went took a drive to Burksville, etc to see some people. Clara Wagner came to get her hair set. Papa took the Chev. to Probst, oil changed; 28144 miles, pump gauge didn’t work.

Monday, May 27, 1935

We girls, Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary & Leona & Billy went to church, Mrs. Eulers funeral, from Querheim Chapel at Waterloo to Hecker Church 9′ o clock; large funeral quite a few flowers. Just 18 yrs. mother dead. Henry & boys came up to make hay, had dinner. Emil came with the wagon this afternoon, & Pete Watchel helped yet, all had lunch here. It started in to rain, so they didn’t get finished with the hay. G. Wagner here a little while. Eggs 21¢ today. Rogation Day’s.

Sunday, May 26, 1935

Went to Red Bud. Mr. Davis & man of Belleville were here looked at the colt. George Wagners family were here this afternoon & evening. Merrimac played Hecker here & won, 2 games lost for Hecker. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary & Henry & family all came this evening, to take in the music at Kammler’s Hall, baseball club gave a dance, Radio Stars Jimmy Dickie playing $20.00, we & Henry & Leona went in & Boy what a crowd & good time, Oh Boy! They sure are good.

Thursday, May 23, 1935

Went to Belleville, papa got 3 teeth pulled by Dr. Wagner $3.50 was allowed $1 for gold crown on tooth. Rose & Bert went to Red Bud, went to Felcias Roscows got dress pattern, & we got 2 sacks feed from Zipfel. Rose took 6 doz. eggs. 21¢. Dr. Smith of Red Bud, his wife left him Sat., also Krehns fired hired girl. Henry came after wire stretcher, this evening.

Saturday, May 11, 1935

Papa went to Waterloo, & to Johanning’s sale by Burksville. Berti send her letters off to 5 people; & a dime to Mrs. Wilson Griffith of St. Louis. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up; got a letter from Seyler & had it cashed. Geo. Wagner’s family also came. Leona brought the boy’s up they stayed all nite. Hecker road commissioner, gave his dance at Country Club tonite, free dance & beer. Art Geodelle had birthday dance at Pautler’s, Geodell’s band played; then they all went out to Heinken’s, played for him. Papa got Chas. Helfrich’s relief check for $16.00 from relief ass. for feed.

Wednesday, May 8, 1935

Rain this morning; then sunshine & windy. We went to Belleville, Rose & papa went to Dr. Wagner dentist, Rose got wisdom tooth pulled, terrible one, took at exray [sic] first, it grew backwards she was in the chair 2 hrs; having it pulled out, cost $5.00 wit exray [sic] $2.00 & medicine; she came home, went to bed. The stove foundry men aren’t working today, on a strike up there again, its awful. It sure is dangerous in Belleville now, there looking any time for the electric plant to blow up, people watch day & nite, found dynamite sticks all over the yard already, search every strange car that passes by, orders is if they see any one, should shout right away, its awful up there. This evening at 9:30 alarm ring, fire at Mrs. Staufenbiel’s house, papa went over; fire department came & soon had it out, burned hole in the roof on Volkman’s side, the nurse had put a grease rag in the stove & damper opened it went straight up, sparks set fire on the roof. Mr. Volkmans is getting along pretty good now, fever is gone but he is awful weak; he asked what the noise was when they started water on the roof, they told him, washing machine was going out in the shed. Good many people came right away, helped Roy was up L. Armstutz car was backed out of shed.
