Wednesday, Feb. 14, 1934

Pap went out haul logs. Aunt Mary & Josie where here for dinner, came up for church, stayed here for the cheese, played 2 games pinochle this afternoon. Mr. Talbot brought 3 lbs. cheese got it from Mertz Store. “St. Valentine’s Day.” Mrs. Henry Hoerth nee Wagner, of East St. Louis was buried yesterday, found her dead in bed. Mr. Aug. Busch, of the Busch Brewery of St. Louis killed himself yesterday; shot, on account of his health. We went to Red Bud service, took Helfrich’s along. The electric lights went out in church. Eggs are 15¢.

Tuesday, Feb. 13, 1934

We washed, ironed, nice day, little windy. Shrove Tues. today, Josie Keller’s birthday, 44 yrs. old. Mrs. Stauenfbiel is moving, Zita’s & Felicia’s furniture, storing in by Hy. Rausch; so Mr. & Mrs. Hy. Volkman will move in part of her house, at present. The Men of Augustine’s Parish will give a Pinochle & Euchre tonite in school hall. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came then Rose & Bert rode along up to the euchre, & Oh! my what a crowd; 36 tables euchre, alone, without sleepers, & pinochle. Attendance prize $1.50 worth of different articles, all 10¢ each, was won by Lee Howery. Quilt was raffled to Herbert Schmidt Red Bud, so many people from all over, Ruma Myerscough’s, Evansville, Waterloo, Red Bud, Smithon [sic], & all different places. We weren’t lucky, Uncle got a bucket, & Aunt got dougnuts [sic] : dish what she she took there; several nice prizes. Miss Keller won 2 prize 1 left them here for next euchre. Dances at quite a few places.

Sunday, Feb. 4, 1934

Went to Red Bud, had throat blessing after mass. Fr. Stern gave the children a good lecture about cursing. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were up, & went home again. Conrad Myerscough & sons stoped [sic] and looked at the mule. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up this evening, she & Bertie went over to see Minnie Staufenbiel; then came back, played pinochle. Levi Ganley has a diferent car.

Wednesday, Jan. 31, 1934

We washed. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came & Josie, here for dinner & supper, played pinochle this evening then had midnite lunch 11:30. Josie held 1500 trump twice hand running, & 600 queens & round house all in same game. Bert had 600 queens. Papa & Uncle Fred got Josie’s machine up from Ben Heyl’s, pulled it up behind Uncle’s car. Ed Neff started it today & put in alchol [sic] all for $1.00. Josie took cheese, butter, sausage & things along, Mr. Talbot delivered 5 lbs. here for 22¢ a lb.

Saturday, Jan. 27, 1934

Bertille went to Willie Birkners, took cake up there. It was in yesterday’s paper that Mrs. Francis Eichenseer of Belleville was granted a divorce from her husband Francis, & he will have to pay $30. mo. alimony, to support her & child. Papa & Rosalia went out to Henry’s & papa went to the woods. Mrs. George Boll’s birthday today. We all went to George Wagners played 1 cards, 5 hand & 4 pinochle, Bertille had 800 kings, partner Rosalia had 100 aces, melted 10, 40 in 4 hand game; cake was served.

Thursday, Jan. 25, 1934

Henry & family came, they went to Bellville [sic] & kids stayed here. Mr. Henry Meng was here paid for his hogs. 207-179 @ $3.70. A man was around taking orders for the New Democrat, $5.00 yr. with a premium, salt & pepper shaker, flour, & sugar, & dripping bowl; we ordered it for 1 yr. A boy around had suit case full of things to sell, all kind of articles, we bought bottle of iodine from him for a dime. We went to Renneckers awhile this evening. Mr. & Mrs. Martin Fritsche also came; we played 4 hand pinochle; Mr. Fritsche & papa partners won 2 games out of seven; wine & apples were served.

Saturday, Jan. 13, 1934

We finished our quilt took it out of the frame. Berti went to Lizzie Boll’s got the bread. Papa went down to Red Bud, took orders for beef. We went to Robert Lauts played 6 hand pinochle, had cake, & wine. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary went to New Athens see John.

Sunday, Jan. 7, 1934

We went to Red Bud, took Helfrichs along. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here for dinner, played pinochle, left about 2:30 went to see Wilfred Eichenseer, they was to bring him home about 2 o’clock. There was a bunch going to chivari Ed Neff last night, but on account of this accident they didn’t. We all went to Eichenseer’s this evening, stayed till 8:30, after the rosary was said; there were quite a few came in & out; some stayed. Angela [the deceased’s sister] takes it awful hard; not so bad on the rest of the family.

Wednesday, Jan. 3, 1934

We ironed, patched. There is a wreath hanging on the bank doors again this year. George Wagner’s wedding anniv. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up this evening & them Rosalia & Bert, went down to Louis Armstutz played 6 hand pinochle, 3 games, Bertille had 600 queens, & didn’t hardly seen them. Mr. Pete Watchel & Levi Ganley where here on business, to see papa, while we were gone.

Wednesday, Dec. 27, 1933

We washed, sewed aprons. Oscar Klotz was here to see if he could a hog to butcher. 8 above zero this morn. We went out to Aunt Mary’s this evening had supper, angel cake, candy, played 5 games pinochle, played till 9:30 & listened to the radio, then went home. Henry Frieshkorn & Mrs. Sophis Huber were married Christmas, him for the 3rd time, & her second, they live at Red Bud. We find 2 doz. egg a day now, they went 15¢ at Eichenseers.
