We painted another little girl. Had spring chicken dinner. It rained all night, this morning yet; can’t cut wheat for awhile now. There was a beautiful float went by, advertising an auction sale to be held at Belleville Sat. & one car to be given away free; the float was shaped like a boat; radio in it, sure was a dandy. Mr. Edgar Prediger oldest boy Cletus was operated for appendix at Belleville, & died yesterday, 7 days since operation, appendix was grown on to liver they say, Jos. Gregson’s neighbor. Rained most terrible this afternoon, just a cloud burst, there was so much water on the road here, splashed all over when the cars went through it; after the rain, kids were all lined up walking in the water in the gutters, also Mrs. Wagners. Papa went over to Rennecker a little while. Henry sends milk to Waterloo New Athens now, Helfrich hauling it, got a new chev. truck & hauls to Athens now. We cleaned basement.

Penetcost [sic]. We went to Red Bud, first mass, 5 boys were enrolled in to the Sodality. Henry & family were here for dinner supper. This afternoon we went along with him to New Athens & Marrisa, about 3 miles south from there we went & looked at a team 3 yr. old mares; drove them around in the wagon, pretty nice, so he bought them $100 a piece; from Edmond Hodges; came home; got Chris Buehler to get them, Hy went along & got them this evening yet; $4.50 to hauled them down; we went out to Henry’s helped with work; Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came out then to see them. The Hecker priest Fr. Aydt has a bid day, he is 5 yrs. priest, 4 priests had the mass & Fr. Aydt made the sermon; choir from Belleville. The baseball team is playing at New Hanover today.

Papa is fixing fence again, will soon be finished now. The Y.P.L. of Hecker, are giving a play intitled [sic], “Gates to Happiness” tonite at Kammler’s Hall; Adm. 35¢ dancing after play. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, we all went up, but it wasn’t so nice, no pep at all; Characters were: Hy. Spalt, Clarence & Ralph Rausch, Harold Wagner, Floyd Thompson: Carol Papbenberg, Vernice Rausch, Marjorie Rausch, Mrs. Arthur Hepp, Alsace Eckert. The hall was crowded. Irene Reheis, furnished musci [sic]. Rev. Hasto painted the backgrounds, furniture came from N. Athens. Papa took load wheat to Red Bud, 90¢, got sack chic mash. Mrs. Gambach & daughter have a new 1935 model Chev Sedan; today. There were gypsies at J. Kaltwasser’s today, ransacked the place, took coffee & bread.

Papa & Rosalia went out to Henrys, got corn, & then got crushing done. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, stopped then went over to New Athens, to a sale, Mrs. Damstater, who killed herself a while back, she bought several things sauce pan & angel cake form. Henry came brought the colt up papa bought it from him for $50.00; sure is nice. We put a quilt in the frame.

We cleaned upstairs. We all, went to Pamier’s sale by New Athens, Mrs. Spalts sister; started this morning & big sale, lot things; papa bought $14.55 heifer, went home got the rack & came back, loaded it up, we went along with Uncle Fred’s to Athen’s Gieger’s 2¢ sale; then came back to the sale again, we run out of gas coming home, Hug Probst had to bring 1 gal out, by Alp. Parker’s. The lawn mower sharpener called this evening, but we have ours fixed now. Sold 20 doz. eggs @ 17¢ & 5 hens, 39 lbs. @ 14¢. Cool day.

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were here, went over to New Athens to Geiger’s to enter a quilt for show. Papa went to Red Bud to the coummity [sic] Sale at the creamery. Mr. Adam Helfrich 84 of Smithton died Thurs. morning, was found dead in the chicken yard, will be buried Mon. morning there, that is Chas. Helfrichs dad.

The old guy what sharpenes [sic], etc is back in town again, was here today, papa gave the cross cut saw to sharpen for 35¢. A guy here wanted to sell auto paint, $2.00 box. Bernice Wagner got 1 doz eggs. Roy Staufenbiel had there little baby girl christened last Sun, called it Pearl Louisa, Mr. Joe & Pearl Griffin as sponsors. Mr. & Mrs. Leo Wittenauer of St. Louis have a baby girl. The Frantz Baker truck of New Athens, Edgar Wittenauer in charge had an accident on the Baldwin road, & damaged somewhat.

Fried down bacon & sausage, finished up ironing, patch. Baked eggless cookies. This morning everything was white, 6 inches snow fell, & Oh! Boy, wasn’t that a schuffling [sic – shuffling] this morning, “you tell em.” Ike Napier & Dorothy of New Athens just recently returned from Arkansas, due to the illness & death of Mr. Napiers mother. We made ice cream this evening, & it was good, this time of the year.

Henry & family came, he plowed, they had dinner & supper here, chicken with dressing. Leona & kids went home this afternoon, went to Waterloo, came back this evening; for supper Wagners family came & we had some hot pinochle games losers drop out. Papa & Robert got crushing done this morning. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stopped then went to New Anthen’s. Tonite they went to Rod & Gun Club, Probst’s birthday celebration.

We washed, ironed. Papa & Rosalia went to New Athens & got sand & cement, brought sausage & beef along. This afternoon we went out to Henry’s, Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary too, the men fixed on the house, plastered the cracks all shut we took, 2 chickens along for supper. Rosalia went home & the boy’s did the feeding, we played 6 & 5 handed pinochle awhile; sliced pears. Mrs. Alice Brand is by Clevelands again.
