We went to Red Bud to 6 o clock mass. The water is still high at the Round Prairie creek yet. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where heres then they went to Belleville & we went down to Ratz’s, at Red Bud, to Prairie du Rocher, to McBride, the trader there; then to Laurent & looked at his house; then drove to Evansville looked at high water. The bell tolled yesterday morning for Wm. Laut, & he will be buried tomorrow afternoon. Miss Elnore Volkman & Wunderlich where married at Evansville church last Tues. It rained this afternoon.

We had an awful wind storm last nite & rain all morn, & afternoon. Papa got crushing done, he got his hair cut. Mr. Laut is awful bad, they didn’t expect his to live till morning, he doesn’t speak any more. Mr. & Mrs. Geo. Lorberg’s have a 11 lb. baby boy born this morning, they now have 2 girls & boy. We killed a hen, boy! it sure was fat; baked mince pie, devil food & Spice cakes. It rained all afternoon; & boy! I mean it did rain & water.

Papa went to see Quathammers. Olivia Lauts birthday. Christ Buehler was here & looked at our hogs. He & Ino came back this morning, & got 2 hogs. @3.75 $19.50 made a note. The sewing circle of Red Bud gave a euchre, & lotto party in there hall; we went down, but didn’t win nothing, only had 7 points, the nines didn’t all get prizes. Miss Marcella Gregson got the pillow cases what we made; it rained & such awful high wind when came home, nearly blowed everything to piece.

Today is town election, Rennecker & Neff Osie are running on the Independent thicket [sic]. We washed, ironed; nice day. Papa went up to vote. Rosalia, Mrs. Rennecker, Mrs. Wagner went this afternoon. Mrs. Rennecker came to see our chickens. Papa went over to George’s, Robert Laut & Steve where also there. There was 77 votes cast at the election today. Elmer Kammler President received 60 votes, Werner Kammler Treas. 57 votes, Vic Eichenseer 50 votes, Hy. Armstutz trustsee [sic] 38, Philip Jatho 34, Osie Neff 37, Rennecker Steve 31 Jatho & Rennecker lost Neff won.

Henry came up & got the hog. Papa & Bertille went to Belleville to a sale at the Merchants Transfer Storage Co; 3 different lots where sold, one bringing $75 – $85 – $80. We bought a buffet from the party that bought the lump for $5.00, it is nice. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where there too, she got a spring for $2.00; that is all we bought, took 24 doz. eggs along & got 9¢ in part trade. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary had dinner here; we got a jig saw puzzle of 200 pieces with a lb. coffee & .01 so we took one, boy! some puzzle. Mr. & Mrs. Joe Watchel & family, Mr. & Mrs. Robert Laut & family where here this evening playing pinochle; 6 handed. Henry Birkner’s have a little baby girl born this eve. it is also Oliver Birkners birthday it is to be christened tomorrow afternoon, Christ & Frieda Buehler sponsors. They called it Valeita Frieda.

Line’s 12’s members are all online 2 now, so they are all out working, setting posts. Papa & Rosalia went out to Henry’s, papa is going to use Henry’s horses & wagon & haul wood together. Rosalia is coming back home again. We took dinner up in the woods to papa, got 9 loads wood hauled up, then Henry came up there for the team to get posts out for the line; so he had to quite [sic – quit]; we took a load of fire wood along home, stopped at Henry’s a little while then went home. Papa hauled cinders from back Henry’s sheds, hauled them in our road. Bertille got the mail, there was a letter there from J. Keller for Aunt Mary, I called her up, & she said for me to open it; the letter was mailed last Fri & was in Hecker on Sat., but no body got there mail till today, she had written that she would try & come out Tues. or Wed. but she didn’t show up those day, anyway’s nobody seen anything of her. Renneckers & Wagners went to Lauts tonite. Mr. Ed. Pabst brought a load of corn this afternoon.

Papa got crushing done. We finished the quilt & took it out of the frame. Mrs. Joe Watchel & boy where here this afternoon, & invited us to go to Angela’s Eichenseer’s this evening, she is 18 yrs. old today. Rosalia & Bertille went, stopped in at Watchel & till she was ready then by Laut’s, Olivia & boys went too, & Clarence Wittenauer & Cecil Pour where the only ones at the party, we played 6 hand pinochle, hamburger sandwiches, & pickles, & cake, where served, we gave her a towel & Clarence brought here a Ivory compact, that is all she got then. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where at Rod & Gun Club House at a dance, public, Cortner’s invited him to help furnish musci [sic].
Monday, Feb. 6, 1933
We butchered our hog today. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary & Henry & family all where up had dinner. We finished at 10 ‘ clock. Alois Havey was here & looked at our pigs, he wants to buy fat hogs. Egg man paid 10¢ today all together we had 32½ dozs. for him. Cyril Eichenseer was here selling chances for a fancy quilt & bad spread to be raffled on Feb. 22 at a euchre in the school hall, papa took a chance on it, 10¢. Harold Wagner was around taking orders for flower & garden seeds, we didn’t order none. Pierce Klotz of Belleville stoped [sic] here, wanted to know if he could put his car in Uncle Fred’s shed across the street, Bertille called them up & they said it was alright, as he put his machine over there, he wants to stay by Mr. Laut a couple days, who is very ill. Papa went to Hecker, to the store, to meet Oscar Birkner, he brought a letter along for us, from Uncle Fred’s, it is awful cold, raining & snowing.

Rosalia & Bertille went to church, candlemas day. Louis Rechfsichner & Colton of Belleville was here, they looked at our mules. Papa went out to Henry’s this afternoon. The ground hog will see his shadow, so I guess that means bad weather. Cyril Eichenseer was here he wanted to see if we had chickens to set, he wanted some. Wilfred came & wanted alfalfa hay. There was a girl here selling soap 10¢ bar, we bought one, she was a cripple & said had no dinner. We got 9½¢ for eggs, store pays 9¢. Cyril said Mr. Laut & Mr. Hepp are getting along pretty good here in town, but Joe Mueth died last night. Papa took the fence out at Henry’s along the road & brought a gal 1 milk along home. We went up to Mueth’s to the wake, he looks natural; we didn’t stay very long, there were so many people there, hardly standing room, anymore. We stopped at Henry’s awhile when we came back. Mrs. Cleveland & Grover stayed there & Albert & Henry went to Mueth’s. They sure got trouble again at Blackburn University.
