Wednesday, Dec. 28, 1932

It is a nice day again. Steve Rennecker went butchering at Al. Heyl’s. Bertille isn’t feeling well today. Aunt Mary called up to see how we all where; there all about the same yet. Clarence Wittenauer had a general call put over the lines that he had lost a dog. This evening he called into Sheriff Al Gauen, what he should do, because he knew the party was has his dog, he wanted to know wether [sic] it should notify him or just go & get it there. Papa & Rosalia shelled corn this afternoon & killed 25 mice.

Saturday, July 9, 1932

This morning about 12:30 or 1 o’clock every body was roused out for church bell ringing, rings over the lines of the fire at Phil Braun’s shed. It burned completely down to the ground, but saved the house & other buildings. Papa went up with a bucket, they had Smithon [sic] & New Athens fire department, got the water out of Stehefest’s pond & from the neighboring wells. It must of started by the truck, & horn kept blowing & roused Phil out, he went to the shed, broke the door in & the truck was all on flames, they couldn’t save much out of the shed, got the old Ford out & Lester Gregson’s truck. The oil barrels just shot up in the air, it looked terrible, the tin roof on & around the house saved it, & Lizzie Parkinson’s. Mrs. Rennecker came over here that while it took about 1½ to 2 hrs. It is still fire there today yet. We went to Belleville this afternoon. Steve Rennecker came over this evening. Rosalia went over to see Mrs. Hill’s flowers, she called up & said she should come over and look at them. It rained a few shower this evening. Henry was up & got some milk, he was here awhile. Josie Keller went past down to Ben Heyl’s.

Sunday, June 26, 1932

We went to Red Bud. It rained a good shower here this morning, but not at Red Bud. Miss Josie Keller came she had intended going to Heyl’s but they aren’t going to be at home, so she stayed here all day & evening & Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where also here, for dinner, lunch & supper. We had ice cream, cake, lemonade for lunch. Then the women folks went out to see the cemetery, when we came back we stopped by Eliza Boll about an hr. Clem Parker was here & gave us all an invitation to come to Alphonse Parker’s barn dance a birthday, we didn’t go. They say there is also one in Weber’s barn, given by the Wittenauers, Lester Gregson’s wife birthday, & also Harry Kammler has one, musci [sic] by Chas. Wagner’s Rythmn [sic] Kings, Adm. 35. Kelley was here this evening & papa & him made a trade, our horse & a stock hay & $7.00 for his 2 horses. Mr. Hill was here gathered up the news. It thundered & lighten & wind this eve. rain.

We shelled corn this morning, then Papa & Rosalia went to Ernst sale between Mondaville & Foster Pond, bought $1.20, sprinkle can, pans, table, rake & hoe. I seen in the paper Frank Geschwinder got 2500 baby chicks from W.C. Heyl Hatchery.

Wednesday, April 6, 1932

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary are planting potatoes up here today. Papa is setting posts. Uncle Fred got our mule to work his patch up for corn. Catherine Perry from St. Louis got married yesterday. We got a letter from the Ill. State Auto Ass. the cards, & stickers for the car. Jo. Huber, & Walter Heyl where relected [sic] for road commisioner [sic] & clerk. against Geo. Lohrberg & Albert Thompsons for Poll 1 Monroe Co. & Melching the way we heard for the Blackjack & out that way.

 

Thursday, March 3, 1932

Eggs where only 8¢ yesterday, lowest they ever were. In last nights paper it was that Colonil [sic] Lindbergh’s baby Augustus Charles Jr. got kidnaped [sic] of it bed, while sleeping between 7 & 10 oclock, there is a big piece in there, but they have no clue of it yet. Joe Braun is moving his family & thing to Fayentiville [sic] where he is now employed with the creamery there, as clerk. John Reagan moved in Joe Braun’s house today. Ben Heyl stopped here this morning to put some water in his radiator, because it always leaked out. George Wagner’s family & Steve Rennecker & wife where here playing pinochle this evening. Eggs are still 8¢.

Monday, Jan. 25, 1932

Today is wash & iron & patching. Sewed all our aprons. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came here this evening, they came after Josie, she was down at Ben Heyl’s today, we played 5 & 6 handed pinochle. Lester Gregson is moving to Hecker in Gambach’s house, he moved some today. Aunt Mary said Edwin Watchel’s windows where smashed in, but she don’t know what happened.

Saturday, Jan. 16, 1932

Papa went up to the Farmers Telephone meeting at Griffins this afternoon. They elected Adolph Spalt pres. Kenneth Kemp vice presi. Purtle Sec. Ben Heyl Tres. We & Renneckers went over to Wagner’s & played cards, Steve had 1500 trump & missed 1000 aces, in one deal, didn’t see them. It broke up about even.

Friday, Dec. 18, 1931

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came here, then we all went to Mrs. Reheis funeral, it was awfully large. We got a written invitation to attend a Birthday Dance at Brezzy [sic] Hill Sat. nite Dec. 19 no name. Ben Heyl’s & Spalt’s had a wreck in town, tore the wheel of Spalt’s machine, while Heyl was turning in to Braun’s.

Thursday, Nov. 19, 1931

Henry is butchering a pig today. Papa & Rosalia went out, they had, lunch, dinner. Eggs are 30¢. Mr. Barthel was here & fixed our spouting this morn. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up, he took Josie down to Heyl’s. They had dinner here. They schocked [sic] there corn & took turnips out. There is a euchre in the school hall, & also Henry Volkmann’s birthday.
