Today is band concert in Smithon [sic], & the News Democrat Corres. was to have there pinic [sic] at Daab’s ClubHouse but was given up now on account of the concert. there is pinic [sic] & cold supper here, given by the Evangical [sic] church; we went down awhile, watch the ball game between Red Bud & Hecker, the latter won 5 to 3; there wasn’t much doing at the pinic [sic] in the afternoon, everybody was at Smithon [sic]; at the band concert; the Koehler’s Orch. furnished music for the pinic [sic], Casper Koehler, Rahn, Cowell, Auelibou, are in the band. Uncle Fred won the quilt that was raffled, & a dandy. Bertille got pair pillow cases at playing bluey. Ed Schilling was published for 3 times & wedding will be Wed. morn. 8 o’clock at Red Bud dance at Oak Grove in the evening. Mamine Mueth & Bess Hillmer where published 1st time in Waterloo.

We went to Red Bud, & to Ratz’s looked at a horse. Henry & family where up for dinner, & supper. Papa, Henry & boys went to Prairie Du Rocher to looked at horse & colt. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary went down to the bridge, & from there came here, had supper, then went home came back again & went to the play in St. Augustine’s Hall school children, gave one Adm. 35¢. We went over to Wagner’s awhile, Rob & Olive Laut came too. Ed Schilling & Mary Furnace where published for the first time in Red Bud, & Waterloo. Miss Frieda Keim, Pete Keim’s daughter & Oscar Jatho, ran of to Belleville & where married last Thurs. afternoon by the squire, he had been going to instructions. Hecker ball team played Floraville at Hecker & won 23 to 3 in favor of Hecker, they won every game so far this season.

We washed, ironed, washed dresses & curtains. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here. Emil came up to Hecker with buggy & horses came here awhile, paid papa 50¢ wood sawing. We planted flowers out. Eggs are 8¢. Uncle Fred got a new blade put in his lawn mower at Bill Fritsche’s. The Belleville Rendering Co. was out last Sat. & got 2 dead horses, Barney Kaiser’s & John Krehers.

Raining all morning, nothing but rain. The baseball team went over & played with New Athens yesterday. Hecker won with score 19 to 1. Bertille went up town mailed a letter to Cresces. We went to Waterloo this afternoon took our eggs in got 11¢ doz., got some repair done on Chev, for 20¢ at Schrieber’s. Papa took eggs up to Hecker this evening; got 10¢. George Wagner & family where here this evening.

“Mothers Day.” Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here for dinner. Henry & family where going to come too, but it had rain to much. Rosalia & Bertille went up to Mamie’s this evening, walked down to Mrs. Ahrens & looked at there, then Mamie came along down home with us. Mildred Gambach broke her arm while roller skating shortly after noon today. The St. Augustine’s Church are having out poster for a pinic [sic] on May 30, the Waterloo has also School Pinic [sic] that day, the Catholic Hecker School children will give a play on 28.

It sure rained & hail, wind this morn about 2 oclock, lots of rain, every day this week. Today is court again in Waterloo, cases of J. Brauer, Kaisers forclosure [sic] & all that; & Annie Schiender divorce. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up to story over nite in Hecker again, we planted our house flowers out; they look pretty. Cyril brought some flowers, to, cosmos. Clara Wagner & kids came while we where planting; eggs are 10¢ today. We washed both cars, & fixed them up.

We patched. Ivo Buehler is disking our ground this morning, took him about 1 hr. quarter. Papa went to town this morn. There sure was a heavy hail storm in New Athens, hail as big as a hen egg they say, by Sam Krehres [sic – Krehers] the wind was so strong it took big trees twisted them right of; we could hear it roar here, there wasn’t any wind here at all. Hy. Limbach came looked at our mule. Rosalia & Bertille went out to work the garden at Henrys again. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up; she brought a house plant & fern from Mrs. Frank Birkner.

Report came over the phones this morning that Hershel Blackburn was dead, he was lying beside the plow yesterday, kicked by a mule, this morn. is dead. Papa went up town. Mr. John Whiteside had a run away with horses & wagon, & he was drug along under the wagon, his skull is split, & in a poor condition. We went to Belleville this afternoon, Rosalia got a spring coat for $1.95 6¢ sale tax; at Quality Store. We received a card from Creses, saying that she is spending a few day at home, we should come & see her, she is going to Chas. Sensel’s barn dance May 6. It is the paper the marriage of George Whitkamp 33 & Hilda Fritz 22 where married last Sun; afternoon Apr. 30 in the Evangical [sic] church, Mrs. Joe Geodelle & Gus Fritz the attendants.

We cleaned the kitchen stove & pipes. Rosalia went out to Uncle Freds & got the potatoe [sic] plow. Broad Hollow Grange is giving a play “Civil Service” tonite & dance after it. We planted 2 bus potatoes. Papa planted a patch of corn. Rosa & Bert went out to Henry’s, had lunch there, washed & worked the garden. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up this evening, stayed in Hecker over nite, she brought 90 cabbage plants & few tomatoe [sic] plants along. The road worker are working by Kammler’s & Scheinders today.

Jonny Krehre’s [sic- Kreher] had a dance last night, celebrating Authur [sic] Schaefer’s birthday which was yesterday & Mrs. John Krehers last Mon; we have no invititation [sic]. Mr. George Boll & Karl where here got a fat hog, to butcher today; it weighed 242 lbs. & $3.50, $8.45 all cash. Papa went to Red Bud & bought lumber for corn crib, & coal 4 bus. 2@17½¢. & dried skim milk. Rosalia & Bert went out to Henry’s got some oats & helped in the garden. Mr. & Mrs. Louis Goessling of Waterloo have a little baby girl, they just have a pair. Omer Schilling has a birthday dance advertised, for Apr. 29 Sat. at Oak Grove. There was a diregible [sic] flew over this morning right low. The other day there was an airplane landed near Valeymeyer [sic] on Schaefer’s farm, & burned up. completely, 4 persons all from Arksasas [sic – Arkansas], the remains where taken to Wagner & Herman funerl [sic] home. Miss Alberta Heyl, Albert’s daughter is switch board operator in Waterloo now, taking the place of Miss Marie Gentsh who is taking the place of Ruth Olendorph, who recently on Easter Sun. got married to Morris Binder also working at the switch board. A Sign was put up in West end Hecker today saying “Road Closed.” It rained all night.
