Sunday, Oct. 22, 1939

Went to mass. Mission Sun. today. Went to Valmeyer to see Demmint, about sow & 10 pigs, sure nice; stopped at Henry’s on way back; baby Joyce sleeps nearly all the time. Sisters were out on Sat. told him [Henry] to send his boys back to school again, things would be different. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came this eve. had supper here. Bill [Klein] came down & we had 5 hand pinochle game. Sure is awful warm.

Friday, Oct. 20, 1939

Bert [Bertille] cleaned kitchen. Klein of Edwardsville was here looking for large white oak trees, we haven’t none. H. Wittenauer schocked 2 loads corn, 1 here & took 1 along home. Henry brought load up to. They say Cortners Lawrence they shocked 5 loads, a day 150 bu. to load; corn is very good. John Klein came bought sow & 9 pigs $55.00. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] went to dentist at Athens left Marita here; they were out at Henry’s last nite. He [Henry] took Rob & Floyd out of school, went to Public School again started today, he says going to see Fr. Aydt tonite with his boys.

Tuesday, Feb. 21, 1939

Washed, put meat & sausage away, etc. Leo & family came this eve. Marita’s eyes are better. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came for euchre in school hall given by Alter Sodality. Bill & Bert [Bertille] went to euchre, didn’t win nothing, big crowd.

Monday, Aug. 15, 1938

Went to 6:15 Holiday Mass. Birkners were here awhile. We cleaned chickens etc. delivered everything cake, potatoes, tomatoes, onions, lard beets. Rained a little, light showers. Nice cool. Emil came awhile. Bill & Bert [Bertille] went to Belleville. Henry came this eve. he was to see Fr. Aydt. about sending Rob. [Robert] to Hecker School it’s alright he should send him; for to make his solemn communion.

Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1936

We washed, ironed, patched; cleaned upstairs took the tree & decorations down. Some guys here this afternoon wanted to use our sheet [? – unclear] to unload some mules, 1 had been lying down in there, they were afraid it would get killed; & they got stuck in the yard, before they even got that far; some time, cut tracks over the whole place, & didn’t even say as much as thank you, came from way down in Mo. some place. Ed. Meng came yet to & Clarence Wagner. The St. Augustine School, they have lotto & euchre tonite given by the Young Ladies Sodality. Geo. Wagner butchered today. Found 3 doz. eggs. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came here, & pap & Bert went along up to the euchre party, the quilt by playing 1 game lotto was won by Joe Watchel, we didn’t get a thing. Pap had 7 & Bert 4 & A. Mary 2 & Uncle Fred 12 he got a table cloth, the prizes were nice, but not very many & hall was filled, all the tables, surely nice crowd lot of N. Athens & Paderborn. Fr. Teonnies was also down. Leo & Rose went to see Geo. Orlet by Floraville.

Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1936

We washed, cleaned basement, fried in meat etc. Bert got mailed Christmas cards from J. Keller, Fr. Stern, First National Bank at Waterloo. Berti got a punch for a 5 lb. box candy by Mertz paid .03. Name Dorthy. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stopped here, then went to the school children’s play in School Hall.

Wednesday, April 18, 1934

We planted the rest of our potatoes today. George Wagner came & got the mule & plow, to work his patch up. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, Rose & Bertie went along to the card party in St. Augustine’s School Hall; pretty large attendance. Berti had 2 points & Rose had 4, so we got nothing, Uncle Fred had 10 got a broom. Some nice prizes they had. Mr. Judge Scheinder Waterloo had 11 points won first prize, got bucket & quilt top; & Clem Parker won attendance prize, a krinkle bed spread. Mamie came this morning, Rose set her hair. The lumber man & Ike Napier were here, talk roofing, from New Athens.

Sunday, May 14, 1933

“Mothers Day.” Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here for dinner. Henry & family where going to come too, but it had rain to much. Rosalia & Bertille went up to Mamie’s this evening, walked down to Mrs. Ahrens & looked at there, then Mamie came along down home with us. Mildred Gambach broke her arm while roller skating shortly after noon today. The St. Augustine’s Church are having out poster for a pinic [sic] on May 30, the Waterloo has also School Pinic [sic] that day, the Catholic Hecker School children will give a play on 28.
