Hot. Went to first mass. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped awhile. Becker Ins. agent came brought policy title back for our car. Henry & family came had supper here. Bill Klein & Bobby & Al, Bertha, Elsie Karban & Marcella Schilling & 2 brothers all came wanted to go to Fort Chartres, but we were getting company so Bill stayed rest left, took his car anyway. When they got to Fort Chartres. Fr. Wishkamp from Paderborn & Buddy Karban & Jerome Haudrich caught them, they all went to Ferry crossed it went to Kaskaskia to church pinic [sic], were Fr. came from; he paid all expenses 10 in all, had supper there; payed $1 a car & 15 [cents] a piece to cross ferry, they all had a wonderful time. We went to Karbans this eve. ate watermelons. Joe Schilling’s threshing run had free beer at Kaburecks to nite & lawn party. Walter Gregsons celebrating 25 yr. silver Wedding inn at Log Cabin tonite. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary went. Fr. Spors was there made a speech. Schmidt Orchestra, playing musci [sic]. Renneker’s, Emil were all down. Nic Cortner died Belleville hospital this morn. sometime buried at Hecker.

Pap went out to Henry’s all day. got 18 bus. [clover seed] out in all now. Leo Kern & Edna Braun were married yesterday at priest’s house at Red Bud; dance last nite. Joe Kern & Louis Cowell’s daughter attendants, bride wore a dark blue dress. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up. Emil was over. Oliver Birkner delivered chick & pig mash. A lady been selling product for orphan children to help them along. Awful hot this afternoon.

Monday, July 18, 1938

Cloudy. We went to Red Bud to Ford Dealer & Chev. & there we got 1938 Chev. Coupe with heater & froster, 6 sets chains for $580 & old Chev. 1926 model $164.00. Black coupe pretty good trade. We canned 2 qts pickles & tomatoes; fixed garage for new car. Kleins got about 2 [cents] bu. for our onions & 50 [cents] bu. potatoes. last Thurs. at St. Louis. Bill [Klein] started working there today in store. Jac. Erle was here to Ins. [insure] car; also Ms. Becker, we insured with Becker for liability & property damage $16.65 yr. Henry & family came brought potatoes, quite a few bushels, & nice ones they got this year. Emil came over to look at the car; same as Uncle Fred’s.

Bert [Bertille] went to Leo’s washed & cut in kraut, 49 gals. Emil came over awhile, hottest day so far 102 [degrees]. Pap dug 1 bu. potatoes.

Saturday, July 2, 1938

Uncle Fred & we went to Waterloo, Uncle traded for a new 1938 Chev. Coupe – allowed $550 for his new Chev. Coupe $744. Pap went out to Henry’s combining oats, yesterday & today. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary went to get there chev. stopped here with it when they came home. Emil was over. New Athens home coming today.

Tuesday, June 28, 1938

Pap & Emil went out to Henry’s. Bert [Bertille] washed ironed etc. Emil came over this eve. waiting for telephone call from Henry.

Monday, June 27, 1938

Bert [Bertille] went to Leo’s with truck, he hauled coal Bert helped wash; they & Bert all went out to Henry’s, combining again 126 bus. afternoon. Chas. Helfrich came got oats. Emil & Steve Rennecker came over awhile.

Wednesday, May 18, 1938

Bert [Bertille] went down to mass, came home, washed & ironed. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary went down to hospital this afternoon. Leo & Bert went down again this eve. Bert stayed all nite. Ed Brand & Carrie & Clara came awhile this eve; were all over by Emil’s today.

Saturday, April 30, 1938

Rained last nite, pretty good. Bert baked cookies, cake & pie. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came brought tomatoe plants along set out 38 in truck patch; planted pumpkins. John Reheis accessor was here. Fred Weber has a barn dance tonite, called over lines. Emil was here.

Friday, April 22, 1938

Harry Wittenauer came to see pap. Henry came they went to meeting at Kammler’s, guys there figureing [sic] out your farms, to what crops you can put out. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came, got horse & him & pap, plowed, his patch for him. We set out 26 cabbage plants in truck patch. Seen in paper transfer of John Kammler’s in town here to Marie Wagner. Dorothy Geogelion of New Athens was buried the other day, she used to work at Vera’s Tavern, was Alf. Eckerts, girl friend; was roller skating & hurt. Emil & girls are having tombstone [of Uncle Adam’s], at cemetery fixed, same stone for both, old one turned & writing put on for U. [Uncle] Adam also.
