We were at Red Bud. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stayed awhile. The girl that Fr. Stern raised was married to Johnson on Labor Day at Red Bud, last Thurs. noon she looked in the mirror & shot herself in the head, died 5 o clock; she was cashier in Packing House in St. Louis, were she will also be buried over there. Mrs. George Gregson who was taken to Red Bud hospital last week was operated on for appendix, & will be removed to her home tomorrow. Josie Kaiser is keeping house. We drove to New Athens, Lenzburg; Happy Hollows: to see Mr. Hamill, he wanted to buy binder or trade on a cow. Steve came here when we got home, told us Chas. Kern & son of Columbia was here looking at drill & binder. Seen some beautiful country by Lenzburg.

Rosalia & Bertille went to Henry’s, helped clean house, had dinner. Henry came up & cut hay, had dinner here. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up, brought lard to Braun’s 9¢ lb. Mr. Zioppel of Red Bud here selling pig feed; Washer sales agent here; lady selling gauze 35¢. Aunt Mary bought it. Fr. Aydt has meeting for the boy’s 16 and men at the hall tonite, Stag Party. Mr. Andrew Rist died at St. Vincents Home, that is John & Mrs. Jac Schmidt of Waterloo father; will be buried Thurs. morn.

Went to Red Bud. Mr. George Gregson is being buried this afternoon from the home of his daughter Mrs. Hy. Benedick to Catholic Church & cemetery. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stayed awhile; went home. We all went up to Firemen’s Pinic [sic] at Manier’s, this afternoon, but not very much doing, no people there, free drawing in afternoon, music by Ellirs band; tonite by Moonlighters Adm. 25¢ got lot of fish, we had 2 sandwiches, we have chances on 2 quilts, 10 gals. gas, crushed rock, cold package $2 each; laying mash, etc. 10 chances in all for 10¢. We all went out to Cleveland’s this evening to a party, watermelon, cake, lemonade, beer, nice crowd, musci [sic] by Miss Miles Goedell’s, & Norman Heyl. Miss Martha Schilling & Joe Neary were published first time at Waterloo today.

Billy’s [aka Willis] 1 yr. old. Mr. Rettinghouse buried year ago today. We went to Belleville this morning took 17 3/8 lbs. chicks along 15¢; got new hats 29¢. We went out to the birthday, Geodelle’s, Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary & Grover, were there, cake was served.

We washed, ironed, patched. Mrs. Cleveland’s birthday. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up this evening. Eggs are 12¢. Aug. Mueths 7 mo. old baby died & was buried at Mascoutha [sic] this afternoon.

Baked doughnuts. Dug bucket potatoes. Awful hot. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came this evening, they were helping Papenberg’s thresh tomorrow at Walter Wittenauer’s I guess. Henry & family came, the men folks all went with him out to George Cortner’s to look at a horse. Hy. Gruber was buried this afternoon at Waterloo. Wagner’s Undertaker, 16 cars in all with Rev. Kochheim.

It rained this morning. Meng’s couldn’t thresh, till this afternoon. We baked bread etc. Papa took the Whip to Probsts to get it fixed. The Waterloo paper has that Albert Niebruegge residing 7 miles from Valmeyer, was instantly killed when struck by lightining [sic], last Sat. at 5:30 & also rendered his farm hand unconscious for some time. He was carrying a hoe at the time & had just passed beneath a tree. George Hoffmann, who resides 3 miles east of Waterloo died last Wed. night, aged 61 yrs. illness of 2 weeks. Mrs. Richard Butler (nee Curran) of Burksville passed away last Thurs. June 28, after a long illness, aged 64 yrs; was buried at Waterloo, also funeral with Father Kuhl’s, Nonaghan & Traynor Eschmann, were Deacon & sub deacons; she leaves 7 children & husband Richard at home, & James, & Mrs. Ray Schmidt of Waterloo.

We washed, ironed; patched. Papa went to Armstutz’s got his team & went to Meng’s & got the mower & cut the hay. we helped to put it away. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary, came went to Hy’s birthday. Mamie & Clarence were down awhile, this evening. Christian Neff’s baby of 2 weeks was buried last week at Paderborn, died of lockjaw. Eggs 10¢ today.

Mrs. Geo. Kuhn Jr. returned from the hospital with the little boy which was born Apr. 29; they have 2, girl & boy. she was Miss Emily Wiegand. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came this afternoon, we all had lunch together here. Uncle got each 1 box ice cream from Griffins, Oh! Boy was it good. We went out there this evening after the ladder & bucks. Miss Marie Harbaugh, daughter of Wm. Harbaugh of Waterloo became the bride of Mr. Herman Miller, son of Frank Miller, last Sat. May 5 in Catholic Church by Rev. Elmer Schumacher, cousin of the bride at 8 o’clock mass. The bride was attendanted [sic] by 2 sister Irene & Rose, wearing canary & blue silk next, blue hat & carried roses; while Rose wore pink silk net & pink hat, also carried roses. The groomsmen were 2 brothers, Ray & Robert Miller, attired in Oxford Gray. The bride had white satin. In the afternoon the Bridal party left for St. Louis to visit Sister Ann William, so she could see her sisters in wedding attire. The bride is a musci [sic] teacher in piano. He is employed by Quick Meal Stove Co. Mr. John Fisher the heater & plumber business of Waterloo died May 7, 59 yrs. buried Thurs. afternoon. The picture of Mr. & Mrs. James Parker is in today’ Belleville paper, he will be 85 yrs in Sept.

Mr. Ziebold, retired miller was buried at Waterloo yesterday, awful large funeral, business places were all closed. Papa hauled posts, helped Henry this afternoon to cut some logs & haul. Cleveland helped too. Berti washed Chev. Seeley worked in garden. Our baby chicks didn’t come yet. Mr. Walter Lehr brought them this evening 209 chicks @ 7½. $15.50, all. The new Hospital in Chester which has been remodeled will now be called Riverview Hospital. Mr. Martin May has sold property to Charles & Anna Hasnedle – twp. 4-9-$1500.00. The primary election turned out with the winners Chas. Wehmeier. Dem. Co. Judge & Reb. Judge Scheinder; For Sup. of Schools; Zimmer had 26 votes & Wm. Weigand received 1 vote but wasn’t running; several others ran for Supt. Mr. & Mrs. Henry Gruber of Waterloo moved to the farm of Mrs. All. Gregson. Cyrus Hill & family moved to Waynesville Mo. where he has gained a position. Mrs. Steiger, Lena Birkners great grandma died this eve. about 6 o clock, will be buried Sun. afternoon 1 o clock at “Lords Corner;” she would of been 100 yrs. old in May, she was blind & couldn’t hear for a good while.
