Bert [Bertille] cleaned front room took of [off] screens. Mr. Watson timber man living on Emil’s place, here on business. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary & Bert [Bertille] went to Belleville this afternoon. We went out to Leona’s birthday 28 yrs. old; those present were Mr. Gus Geodelle & family & Dan Geodelle & family, Kate Friedrich, Mr Cleveland & Mrs. Walter & Hilda Reheis & Armie. Adolph Klube & family, New Athens, house full; people all night, had 1/8 beer, cake, drinks, musci [sic] etc.
Sunday, Sept. 11, 1938
Went to mass. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were here all morn. went home. Emil was here awhile too; he is invited out to Cleveland’s celebrating Grovers 21 yr. birthday, which is tomorrow. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came brought lawn mower back, fixed it up. from here they went to Leo’s. Mary Braun & Doris Peiffer having birthday dance at Daabs tonite Schmidts playing. Adm. 25 [cents].

Went to mass. Rosalia’s 27th birthday today, came down had dinner chicken here, then went to Waterloo Home coming see parade & another hot day in park without shade trees, seen the new Waterloo High School, $145,000 building; some place.
Tuesday, Aug. 2, 1938
Washed, ironed. Billy’s [Willis] 5 yr. birthday today. Hy. Armstutz came got coop chickens old hens we shipped 24. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary over here. Oscar Goedelle was buried yesterday at Waterloo. We went out to Henry’s Billy’s birthday; had cake & cherry juice. Cleveland’s, Geodelle’s, Orlets families were present, music & singing.

Nice day. Henry & family came yesterday afternoon boys stayed here & Bert [Bertille] went along to Belleville, got new dress & things. Geo. Walzbacher’s only child girl Mary Elizabeth 4 yrs. old died at St. Marys Hospital brief illness says in paper. Mr. Joe Rieckert celebrated his 98th birthday on July 9. still hole & hearty, still pratices [sic] law yet. Walter Nobbe & Al Hoffmann were here, trying to trade cars again, now he offers $150. for chev. but we won’t trade yet with him, wait longer. Harry Wittenauer came going to thresh oats here by tomorrow.

Washed ironed, cleaned basement. Pap 60th birthday. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary & Henry & family were all here this eve. had popcorn, cakes, wine. Awful hot these days. Bert [Bertille] got soup bone beef, made soup for dinner. Eggs 17 [cents]. Bert sent a card for Fritz & his German band, to play a song for pap & Henry birthdays.

We went to Leo’s today, washed etc. planted potatoe. Mrs. Orlet passed away at 1 o clock this morn; to be at Quernheims tonite. Robert is 12 yrs. old today. Beautiful day; had light frost this morn. was supposed to be 34. Pap went to Smithton Bank. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came, we went along in to Quernheims, Mrs. Orlet is laid out with black dress & white collar & gray coffin, looks natural, has lot of mass cards, & 4 bouquets flowers; there were quite a few people there this eve. Fr. Joe [Orlet] prayed rosary.

Beautiful day. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came, pap went along to Kessler’s sale; such a crowd; fair price. We went out to Henry’s celebrating Floyd’s birthday which is tomorrow; 9 yrs. old, grandpa [Anton] gave him a nickle [sic] for playing accordion, we had pie & cake. Wulher [? – unclear] the ex pres. of Belleville bank, his picture was in paper; also Louis Kaiser’s girl – 6 yrs.

Cold. Boy! Its 6 above radio says. E. St. Louis was 4 & at St. Louis 2 above. in Minnesota 22 below. Bert [Bertille] baked cake, stitching etc. Aunt Mary’s birthday. Bert called & congratulation. Uncle Fred was working in the woods all morn.
