Raining this morn. We went to Belleville pap went to dentist, it is colder tonite. Eggs 20¢. Jake Orlet, John Mueth * Aug. Kaubrueck stoped [sic] in looking for seed oats, then went to the school house to a Literary Meeting. Belleville speakers 2 of them.

Wednesday, March 3, 1937

Beautiful day. Pap hauled 2 loads wood. Frisch came & got 17 bus. 17 lbs. oats @ 60¢, that is all we are going to sale for awhile. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, he went to L. Birkners, she helped quilt all afternoon, had supper here, she went to church this eve. Fr. Rattermann has the services on Wed. nite. Leo & Rose came down this eve.; she helped quilt. Geo Orlets girl Cecilia was rushed to the Belleville hospital Sun. was operated within half hr. time, had appendix; she isn’t so good wouldn’t let no one in yesterday. Mr. Orlet is out at Leo’s now, helping with the work; last nite Martin Karban, Geo & Emil Helfrich, Jake’s family & Mr. & Mrs. Orlet & Isidore, were all by them; played card; Mr. Orlet stayed out.

Saturday, Feb. 27, 1937

Snowing lightly all day; Leo & Rose came, him & papa went to Wendell Forness sale at Parrots corner; Leo got jug 15¢. Mr. & Mrs. Forness are going to move to Belleville & son in law Mr. & Mrs. Ed. Schilling. Rose helped quilt all afternoon. Eggs 19¢. Henry got crushing done & stopped in a short while. It was in paper that Mrs. Jul. Rausch found one of her hens had laid an easter egg dark, had yellow band around it. Alois & Gertie came short while, asked Bert to be confirmation sponsor for Thresa [sic] Cortner, at Paderborn on Apr. 5.

Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1937

Lent. We went to church, received the ashes. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came we went out to Henry’s, went along to St. Louis to Zeiheim [sic – Ziegenhein] funeral chapel to Frank Dudenhoefer funeral, all nephews pallbearers, has some beautiful bouquets, about 21 or 25, some nice ones. We went to J. Kellers for dinner at 1 o’clock, then went to the chapel again, met all Dudenhoefers & all, funeral was at 3 p.m. we didn’t go out to the cemetery, to far, got home here about 5:15, we got to St. Louis at 11:30 this morn; had nice drive, met Winnie Ganley. Jake & wife & Walter & wife were also over. Mrs. Wolf, that is Mrs. Jatho mother, was buried from Belleville to Village Cemetery here, this afternoon; lot of people sick & dying.

Tuesday, Feb. 9, 1937

Bert washed, ironed. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came they had dinner & supper here, him & pop went to Waterloo on business. Uncle Fred & Aunt went to see Louis Birkner this afternoon; he is pretty sick, has flu, fever. Henry & Leona went to Belleville, took calf in got 9½ – they are 10½ on the radio. Billy [aka Willis] stayed here, came back all had dinner here. Some fellows here from Red Bud looked at horses. We all went to euchre in School hall tonite, we got nothing. Uncle got picture of a bird, & A. Mary a lamp; big crowd, from all over Waterloo, Red Bud, Athens, Paderborn; nice evening, cold. Mrs. Hepp died at Wm Wiegands, her daughter; will buried about Sat. at Round Prairie; she was pretty old to.

Saturday, Feb. 6, 1937

Baked & cleaned. Pap went up town to the barber. We drove as far as Barthels Garage, & went along with Leo & Rose to Belleville, got there pictures 13 in all one big one free, & painted also. Sure beautiful day, warm. Read papers & listened to radio.

Thursday, Feb. 4, 1937

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were up nearly all day, him & pap went to Waterloo on business; had dinner here. This evening we went along with them, went out to see Uncle Adam & Emil, he fell on the ice again today, but not too bad, he looks good. Hy. Weigands have a baby boy born at hospital at Belleville on Jan. 26. first born, formerly Viola Rieso of Broad Hollow. Pretty cold 18°.

Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1937

St. Blase Day. We went to Red Bud had our throats blessed. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were also up, for that, stayed awhile. Houbaum of Wartburg & nephew came & got the sow & 5 pigs $35.00 & Ralant Laut got hay 25¢. Bert got letter from J. Kellers she left some boxes at Ella Miller’s at Belleville for Rose, she should call for them there.

Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1937

Ground hog seen his shadow, 6 weeks bad weather. Leo & Rose came, we went along to Belleville, pap went to dentist, they had dinner with us, took the wash stand along that was upstairs. Pap & Bert went to Waterloo this afternoon, got egg mash, paid Quernheim for Rose furniture, Bedroom Set, Spring & Mattress, kitchen cabinet, all $120.75. Beautiful day, little cold. Pap & Bert went over to Geo. Wagners, helped quilt a Sun flower quilt, had lunch. Pap & Steve, Ed. Kerober, Geo. Wagner played pinochle & solo; ladies quilted.

Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1937

Leo & Rose came, we all went to E. St. Louis to National House, but was no business, couldn’t make use of the $35. check anyway; went shopping awhile, stoped [sic] at Belleville on way home. Pretty nice day, not so cold. The Hecker Y.P.League having a euchre & dance tonite. Misci [sic] by Kattinger Vagabonds. Sparks May & Laber girl & another girl. There is also euchre & dance given at Paderborn church hall tonite. Alois Roth & Gertie came took Bert along to Paderborn, had a large crowd, we didn’t get no prize, had 5 points. Leo & Rose didn’t get none either. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, went to the Y.P.L. euchre, they only played 8 games, they both had 5, got percolator, & meat platter; but the crowd wasn’t very large. It isn’t so cold tonite. Skaer Bro. played at Paderborn.
