Washed ironed, cleaned basement. Pap 60th birthday. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary & Henry & family were all here this eve. had popcorn, cakes, wine. Awful hot these days. Bert [Bertille] got soup bone beef, made soup for dinner. Eggs 17 [cents]. Bert sent a card for Fritz & his German band, to play a song for pap & Henry birthdays.

Friday, April 29, 1938

Worked garden, cut lawn etc. Harry Wittenauer is plowing, getting ready to plant corn here. Pap went to Waterloo with 19 bu. wheat @ 67 [cents] top price 75 [cents] Eggs 16 [cents]. Pap went to H. Wittenauer’s got 3 pigs $14.00. School pinic [sic] at Blackburn’s today, last day school this year. A lady here selling garments. Seen in Waterloo paper that Geo. Haudrich bought the farm right west of town from Mathilda Lippert & husband of Belleville; Armin Geodelle is now living there. Mr. & Mrs. Jermome AuBuchon of Muryphsboro [sic – Murphysboro] have a baby boy, paper reads; Red Bud.

Monday, April 25, 1938

Washed, ironed etc. scrubbed brooder house, we planted out about 24 tomatoe [sic] & 30 cabbage plants also sweet potatoes & pickles; it is getting pretty dry. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary worked up here this afternoon; got well pump fixed made new screens on windows & doors. Edwin & Fritz Reheis got half of his stock hay this morn; 3 loads. Harry Wittenauer was here; pap went out to see Walter Wittenauer; Clarence came this morn. with the ball ground rent $25. – the $10 from last yr. & $15 for this year.

Saturday, April 23, 1938

Pap got crushing done. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came this afternoon, pap went along with them to sale, by Valmeyer, & at Tipton – Joe Lengyl; bought crocks. 1-4 gl – 2- 2 gals. – 1 gal. 65 [cents] cheap. Bert [Bertille] went to Rose’s [Rosalia], cut lawn etc. Leo worked the horse this afternoon. Weber of Smithton, was here on business. Radio isn’t very good this eve.

Friday, April 22, 1938

Harry Wittenauer came to see pap. Henry came they went to meeting at Kammler’s, guys there figureing [sic] out your farms, to what crops you can put out. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came, got horse & him & pap, plowed, his patch for him. We set out 26 cabbage plants in truck patch. Seen in paper transfer of John Kammler’s in town here to Marie Wagner. Dorothy Geogelion of New Athens was buried the other day, she used to work at Vera’s Tavern, was Alf. Eckerts, girl friend; was roller skating & hurt. Emil & girls are having tombstone [of Uncle Adam’s], at cemetery fixed, same stone for both, old one turned & writing put on for U. [Uncle] Adam also.

Thursday, April 21, 1938

Nice day, warm. Cooked kettle soap. Pap went to Waterloo, with 20 bus. wheat @ 72 [cents], yesterday he got 68 [cents]. Price is 75 [cents]; he stopped at Henry’s also. Mrs. Cleveland was there to. Floyd is to get 1 lb. coffee on the Old Judge program by Susie. 3 persons on same song, policeman Song. I didn’t hear it on radio. Otto Geodelle of St. Louis, formerly of Waterloo, is in hospital, shot himself in head, but didn’t kill him, is in hospital. Pap went to see Hy. Feurer; about the signing of corn program. then he went to see Fred Weber by Smithton, about pigs. The Ladies Aid have a card party at Kammler’s tonite; Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came. Bert [Bertille] went along to euchre. Bert [Bertille] got first prize 11 points out of 14 games. got a straw rug, beautiful. Uncle [Fred] had 7 got box cocoa & A. [Aunt] Mary had 7 got napkins; not much of a crowd 7 tables euchre 3 or 4 pinochle, & bluey quite a few; not much at all.

Monday, April 18, 1938

Nice day, washed, ironed, etc. Pap strawed potatoes. Today Easter Mon. should be the wedding of Henry Bruns & Marcella Whiteside & also that of Fred Wiegand 23 & Doroth Kleber 22, Mr & Mrs. John Wiegand attendants for Fred Wiegand & Lyle Rausch a girlfriend for Bruns; they have about 50 for supper at Bruns. Steve Stiffler was here of business, paid the last for his horse now.

Saturday, April 16, 1938

Cleaned 2 roosters for tomorrow, had soup dinner. Pap went to meeting at Kammler’s hall. Henry stopped in. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came, pap went along to Log Cabin, sale of the late Kate McDermott; didn’t buy nothing. Pap went to Emil’s.

Wednesday, April 13, 1938

Washed, ironed; cut lawn, etc. Pap went up got hair cut. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up, cleaning garden, she went to church, also went down to Red Bud. We went to church at Waterloo. Mrs. Wm. Ganley is pretty ill, since last nite. We set 19 hens to nite, 264 eggs. Bert [Bertille] washed Chev. Sure hot today. Lester Brown is driving a bread wagon now, new truck, 75 miles trip, delivered it to stores, down toward to Chester etc; has no work at Belleville no more. Geo Wagner hasn’t worked for nearly 2 mons. now. Bruns gets 2 1/2 [cents] loaf; sells about 400 loaves a day.

Monday, April 11, 1938

Went to Leo’s, washed, cleaned room, worked garden. Pap went to Ververs to get 22 doz. white rock setting eggs for 24 [cents] doz. blood listed; he then cleaned chicken house & set 19 hens. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] brought Bert [Bertille] home this eve; took truck along back.
