Ascenscion [sic] Day, Holiday. We went to mass at 6 o’clock. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came. The school children of Red Bud & some other schools are having an outing at Fort Chartres today, ice cream etc. Cool this morning & smoky. We went to Freeburg to see Classen. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came this evening, we went down to Red Bud, the doctor wasn’t at home, then went to Miss Belle Lambert, no body home there either, so we took the new hard road & drove down to Baldwin, over the river, it is awful dangerous, it is 8 mis. from Red Bud, so went we came back, went by Miss Belle again, then they were home, just got back from St. Louis on the bus; talked awhile, then went home, grape juice & cookies were served by Miss Mary. Seen in the paper a man by Prairie du Rocher, had a quarrel with his wife, then drank gasoline & shot himself funeral Sat.

Papa is 56 yrs. old today. Ed Neff has sold his filling station & tools & now he moved to St. Louis were he is employed as a mechanic. On May 12 will be another school election, appoint a new director on Rausch’s place who just resigned. Papa went to Red Bud got chick mash & cement. Mr. Rennecker brought our paper down. Eggs are 12¢. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary, Henry & family were all up for the birthday, cake, popcorn, beer wine were served.

Pap & Rose went to Belleville with some more hogs. Seen in the paper that Roy Cameron a farm hand, now near Belleville, but formerly worked for Ald. Rittmeyer was married to a girl near Belleville on last Mar. 15. at Carlye Ill. by Justice of Peace. Got $3.55, for hogs. 475 lb. they brought some beef along 12¢ lb. sure high, to what hogs are. Mr. & Mrs. Ben Heyl stopped in. Ben took a look at the hogs; but to high price for him. Mr. Ralph Collei of Waterloo, Insurance Agent, gave us a call told us his wife Manda came back to him, & also Mark he was gone 6 mon. & in 13 states; he went to Washington, first place; the girls are going to high school in St. Louis. A man here wanted a pair socks, we gave him some old ones; he was walking from Belleville, wanted to go to Red Bud, said his feet were sweating & wanted a pair dry socks. Milton Wagner, brought the beef sack, here & invited us to his Wedding dance next Sat. in Kammlers Hall. It was in the paper that Hy. Wedel Jr. was granted a divorce from his wife Leona Mueller. Prestitzle & his wife’s case was in court, too for divorce but it is dropped. Omer Schilling birthday.

Papa & Rosalia went out in the woods took dinner along. It is raining a little this morning. April Showers. They only went as far as Henry’s & brought load posts along back, didn’t go to the woods at all. We got the chick yard all spade over & sewed in oats. Cut the lawn, papa disked the potato ground, but to wet to plant yet. Dan Goedell & family stoped here, thought Leona was up, they wanted to tell her that Mrs. Geodells Dan’s mother died & will be buried Fri. afternoon at 1:30, from the house; she should tell Tom Crowe to let his folks no [sic – know] in St. Louis. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were at the cemetery & then came here. We all went to the cemetery this evening, took 2 sacks ground along & filled up Louise grave, sunk in a little. Rosalia took eggs up got 14¢, she heard Mrs. Louis Birkner 66 yrs. had died this evening. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary left right away & went up there. Papa was talking to Louis this afternoon, & he said she was getting better, only her eyes & face was all swoll up today, from the medicine, what Pautler gave, he said thats what he wanted, they thought everything was allright; & now she is dead already. Pautler said she had poision [sic] in her & that had to come out. She died on Emma, Oscar’s girls 5 yr. old birthday today. 19 grandchildren.

Easter Sun. Went to church. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were up for dinner & supper. Henry couldn’t come got St. Louis Company, Louis Geodell’s. It rained this morn. 7 Suns. rain. Mrs. Zipel nee Ness, died at Evansville. We played cards this after.

Pap went out haul logs. Aunt Mary & Josie where here for dinner, came up for church, stayed here for the cheese, played 2 games pinochle this afternoon. Mr. Talbot brought 3 lbs. cheese got it from Mertz Store. “St. Valentine’s Day.” Mrs. Henry Hoerth nee Wagner, of East St. Louis was buried yesterday, found her dead in bed. Mr. Aug. Busch, of the Busch Brewery of St. Louis killed himself yesterday; shot, on account of his health. We went to Red Bud service, took Helfrich’s along. The electric lights went out in church. Eggs are 15¢.

Papa went in the woods, took dinner along, Willie & Jack Ganley worked for him all day, made 22 logs, worked 8 hrs. We started a new quilt “star with Diamonds.” Fredrick Fritsche delivered papers for to order mazines [sic – magazines] this morning. We got 2 papers tonite. It is in there that Frances Eichenseer was arrested last nite, charged with assault & battery against his sister in law, Miss Osbacher of Olive Street, St. Louis, he pleaded not guilty & trial will be held Tues. morn.

We ironed. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary, Josie all here for dinner, then Josie went back to St. Louis, & had nearly a load. Papa hauling wood. Rosalia went quilting by George Wagners this afternoon. Bert made cookies, cleaned up from butchering. Rose had supper there & quilt till 7:30. Henry came got a tire for his trailer it it will fit. Eggs are 18¢ today; nice warm day.

George Wagner & Hy. Armstutz got hog this morn. Miss Ida Sommer 26 yrs. old died of inflamatory rheumatism will be buried this afternoon at Waterloo, she is Fred Miller’s & uncle, only near relative, she has several houses, made a will about 2 weeks before she died. Steve Rennecker, was over to see if he could get a hog for Louis Dehn; he wants to butcher tomorrow, got our larrd. Gus Eocler of Wallace St. Louis Mo. was here on business for Uncle Fred, he bought the Coldwell Place, near Burksville. It sure did rain & hail as large a moth boll this morn, & sun shine the rest of the day. Miss Josie Keller, wen to Ben Heyl’s for the rest of the week there. Mr. Henry Hecke of Red Bud is being buried tomorrow afternoon in Round Prairie Cemetery. Pop went to Meng’s.

Papa got hair cut; him & Rosalia went out to Henry’s got a load oats. Baked Oatmeal cookies & pie this morning. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up, we all went to Red Bud to Mass. Jake Mauer’s sale, large attendance, papa bought rope & things, it was late till they started the household goods, we left afterwards. Buel Rascow was sale cryer, & John Schumacher, clerk; Mrs. Mauer is going to move to the city & her 2 daughters that are not married, will live with her, Bertha & Stella; everything brought a fair prize for bring cash sale. Mrs. Lizze Peiffer, 53 yrs. of age died last Tues. evening & buried this afternoon at Millstadt Cemetery she was Lizzie Hollerbach; married Chas. Peiffer, have 1 son & 2 daughters. Mr. Elmer Rittmeyer 32 & Miss Edna Rieso 19 are being married at Smithon [sic] Church by Rev. Hoste [? – unclear] at 3 oclock, wearing white dress & veil. Mr. Al Rittmeyer & Alice Mantle are the attendants & Miss Mabel Rieso Maid of honor & Aaron Papenberg groomsmen; one wearing peach, & the other green, with slippers to match; they will live in St. Louis, where the groom is employed, a private reception is held in Daabs Club house this evening for, invited several hundred guests. Santa Claus was in Hecker, Mertz store from 3 o clocks on.
