Sunday, Dec. 11, 1932

It started sleeting, it was awful bad driving the windshield always froze up & we couldn’t see, had to clean it of [sic – off] 5 times coming home from Red Bud. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here for dinner we had chicken, we played 5 hand pinochle about 3 games then they went home. Dan Geodelle & his family called in this morn, looking for Henry, he wasn’t home they where at Waterloo, she called in so they are going to visit them tonite. Dan wanted to speak with Henry about pigs. Art Schaefer & a gang, Papenberg, Parker’s, went down the road with the sleigh & bells ringing this afternoon for a ride, they sure went some. We went to Robert Laut’s this evening. Joe Watchel’s family & Mr. & Mrs. Karl Boll where also there, the ladies plaed 5 hand pinochle & the men played solo. popcorn & wine where served, came home about 11 o’clock.

Wednesday, Sept. 14, 1932

Mr. & Mrs. Edwin Spalt of Pine Lawn have a little baby girl born Aug. 31. Papa went down to Hy. Armstutz, to haul out crushed corn. Henry was up & got 4 barrels of whey. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up & then went to Robert Lauts, Victoria Schaefer is there; she called out there to them & told them to come. Herman Pinkel of Waterloo died & was buried today.

Wednesday, March 9, 1932

Geo. Sensel has sale this afternoon, awful cold, Adolph Schaefer from Waterloo bought the farm & will move out soon. Papa was up town this afternoon, they told him there it was a pretty big crowd at the sale & everything brought a fair price. It started in to snow this morning but not long.

Friday, Jan. 29, 1932

Vic Eichenseer was here & delivered some articles, flour etc. Mr. & Mrs. Louis Armstrutz where here this evening, playing 5 hand pinochle, Bertille had 1500 spade. The nurse was at the Paroachial  [sic] School & sent John Krehers, Nic Schaefers & Will Braun’s, children home because they had scarlet fever & also quarrantined [sic] them. Melburn Miller got pulled in for making whiskey & beer.

Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1932

Rained last nite. Today Aunt Mary is 55 yrs old. We went out right after dinner had supper there. Louie was down in the afternoon & we played 5 hand pinochle. About 5 o clock a big showrer [sic] or rain come up. Then later it cleaned of so nice, moon shined & stars. About 9 o’clock, George Parker’s kids & Schaefer’s & Pappenbergs kids all came, card playing pinochle & [ineligible] till 12. Cake & lemonade where served. Musci [sic] was played.

Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1932

Papa was up at Osie Neff’s today to see wether [sic] it would suit to measure his road & stacked it off, but it dosn’t [sic] suit him. Gustv Dudenhoeffer was out at Pete Reheis all last week. There is so much sickness going around again. Mr. Hill had wooping [sic] cough & Willis Harbaugh children, Henry Birkners & Frank Birkners & Oscar’s kids are sick, Ed Cortners, Nic Schaefers, Ed Schneiders, kids all got some kind of sickness & lots others yet. John Reageans & Bill Harbaughs got the signs on for Scarlet fever. A man was here trying to sell the Daily Advocate paper. Papa went to Waterloo this afternoon. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary & Josie came here, then we all went to the euchre in Kammler’s Hall, Bertille had 8 points & got a bucket. Josie got bobby price [sic – booby prize] a layer cake. Rheinhardts band played for the dance.

Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1931

I seen in Sat. paper the marriage license for Ed. Neff, 24 & Emma Braun 20, they where married Sat. night, by Fr. Grootens in Nic. Schaefer’s house in St. Clair Co. Best where Vic. Braun & Erna Braun. Today is Uncle Fred’s birthday, he is 57. We went out this eve, there was a bunch there & they danced. Uncle Fred had to get Josie again. John Braun was here on business. Leomade [sic-lemonade] & cake where served at Birthday.

Sunday, Oct. 25, 1931

We went to Waterloo church this morning to hear the new organ, & they have 2 weeks mission starting today.  This week for the women & next for the men.  We went to George Boll’s shooting match but didn’t win a thing, there wasn’t much of a crowd there, he had 11 geese & a few ducks to raffle.  Fred Schaefer was here this morn. to collect his threshing bill, papa paid him $1.85, for Henry.  Harry Kammler has a dance tonight, Peter Bros. playing Thurs. night.  The Hecker baseball club is giving a dance in Kammler’s Hall, Herzog Orchestra.

Friday, Oct. 23, 1931

Papa & Rosalia went down & cleaned our truck patch this morning, we have our green tomatoes all picked.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where up all day & pulled there turnips up, some of them, they tried to deliver some around town, but couldn’t sell many, some to Mrs. Dueker & Mrs. Ahrens, that all they sold.  The egg man came this afternoon he got our 8 doz. eggs & 1 bu. pears, from Uncle Fred, & they took 14¾ lbs. of springs along for 194, that’s the price at Lipperts.  Eggs came down a ¢ in the paper, they are 25¢ today.  We pulled our turnips out & put them in the cellar, what we had by the roadside.  They rung over the lines last night that John Schmidt the tinner, he used to be at Waterloo died & would be buried Sat. afternoon, & also that Geo. Boll has shooting match Sun. for ducks & geese.  Carl Quathmer also has shooting match Sun. Willie Reagean’s, quite a few Sunday.  They worked at the cemetery agan today, Braun, Grossheim, Schaefer had the teams.

Tuesday, Oct. 20, 1931

Leona & the kids where up we washed, all her quilts & ours.  She took a basket green tomatoes & some ripe ones, along home.  They & Bertille went down to the molasses factory, she left at 2 gal. jar there to get filled with foam.  They told us down there about Bug Schaefer getting married & a wedding dance at Brezzy [sic] Hill tonight.  We all went & had a good time, the Melody Club furnished the musci [sic].  They had double bridesmaids, & a crowd, the hall was packed.
