We went to Jac. Brandt funeral it was largely attended. Papa went to Waterloo this afternoon he got a book from the Times printing office, for agriculture – it is for farmers. Christ Buehler’s are having corn shocking frolic & butchering. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary helped. Mr. & Mrs. Steve Rennecker & George Wagner’s family where all here this evening, playing cards, Bertille had 1500 trump in Clubs & partner 300 pinochle. Harold Wagner’s birthday is today. Henry & Leona went to Belleville & left the kids here this afternoon. 3 little pigs born.
Tuesday, Jan. 10, 1933
We fried down bacon, sugar cured meat. Steve Rennecker came over & collected his telephone dues, $1.50 including drop tax. Steve cut all of his trees down in front of his house. George Wagner hauled them away for firewood. Papa went over awhile. George & Joe Wactel was also there. The Democrat man from Belleville called out to Hills to get some information to put in the paper today on Hecker Default State Bank, about the wreath that has been placed there; in front of the bank door. Mrs. Hill ordered some cottage cheese from Ben Heyl’s they sell it 15¢ pint. Mrs. George Wagner put a quilt in the frame this morning, Mrs. Rennecker helped, Mrs. Watchel also helped to quilt on it this evening. Jerome Cortner was to see Uncle Fred’s but they wasn’t up here, they where at Chris Buehler’s, who is pretty sick, he didn’t come over here. Wagner told him that they wasn’t up today.
Monday, Jan. 9, 1933
We butchered 2 hogs today. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary & Henry where helping, had lunch & dinner. Uncle Fred stayed for supper then we played 5 hand pinochle. Mr. Tecklenburg paid 28¢ for eggs we had 7½ doz; he got some from Mrs. Rennecker too. Mrs. Papenberg called up this evening for a patter for a sunburst quilt, we didn’t have none.
Friday, Jan. 6, 1933
Papa pumped the water out of Uncle Fred’s cellar this morning. Mr. Rennecker & Hy Armstutz are butchering 1 hog at Mrs. Arns today. Bertille got the papers. Mr Wm. Laut & Mr. John Hepp are awful bad sick no hopes for recovery. Mr. Laut got a light stroke again. Mr. Hepp here in town has kidney trouble. There is a big free dance tonite at the Odd Fellow Hall at Waterloo. Seen in the paper that Wm. Sensel’s mother, Mrs. Mary Sensel was buried last Sun. afternoon at Waterloo 74 yrs. old; her husband preceded her in death about 2 yrs. ago. Dr. Sennot died, most probably be buried this afternoon, being ill for several months, in former years, he practice as his doctor in Hecker for several yrs. According to Bill Kleyer’s onion, this is supposed to be a very dry year. Sheriff Al Gaven took Wm. Zimmer Jr. to the Vandalia Penal Farm last Friday. Alf. Mueller who was clerk at Connor’s Store is now employed at Gauen’s Store since the first & Joe Johnson is now employed at Connor’s.

The weather is sure nice these days. Papa went up town got some aspirins tablets this morning. He split wood, smoked summer sassage [sic] all day. Papa & Rosalia rung the pigs this morn. We made a patch beer today. Leona came up she was by Doc. Eckert, they are sick to now. Henry is in bed & Floyd had fever last night she said, guess everybody will get it, bad cold. Steve Rennecker came over awhile this afternoon. They are all right yet, George Wagner family & Mrs. Rennecker went to Belleville this afternoon.

It is a nice day again. Steve Rennecker went butchering at Al. Heyl’s. Bertille isn’t feeling well today. Aunt Mary called up to see how we all where; there all about the same yet. Clarence Wittenauer had a general call put over the lines that he had lost a dog. This evening he called into Sheriff Al Gauen, what he should do, because he knew the party was has his dog, he wanted to know wether [sic] it should notify him or just go & get it there. Papa & Rosalia shelled corn this afternoon & killed 25 mice.

It snowed last night, everything is white, & cold. George Wagner’s family & Mrs. Rennecker went to Belleville this afternoon. Geo. Boll went around selling meat & beef today. The Farm Bureau are giving a dance in the Odd Fellows hall tonite, members are free & other’s 25¢. Robert Laut’s family are visiting Rennecker’s this evening.

We went to Red Bud church. Aunt Mary was here awhile before church, she came up with Oscar’s. Ralph Rausch brought the Sun. paper here this morn. It is a beautiful Sunday. Gus Klotz killed a buf yesterday. We went over to Rennecker’s awhile & played pinochle, this evening. Rosalia held 1500 trumps in clubs.
Monday, Nov. 7, 1932
It is cloudy. Walter Wittenauer was here this morn., to see if we had a place to keep a horse, so his children can drive up to school, we haven’t no place, he wants to sell pigs, on trade for stack hay. Papa went out to see his pigs, but he said he didn’t want them, skinny, he has 30 little pigs. We washed this afternoon & then spaded the garden. Mrs. Rennecker came over then awhile. Papa went to see Becthold at Smithon [sic]. Rennecker bought 40 bus. corn 20¢ bu. from Jac. Klein. Frank Geshwender & Mildred Bechtlloff where published yesterday in both masses for the 1 time. She was honoree at at halloween bridge party on Oct. 31. Mon. nite, by Mairan Hartnagel, 3 tables, there it was amouced [sic – announced] of the marriage in the near future. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stopped in awhile, then they went to Wm. Birkner’s. The marriage license of Henry Wiegand 28 & Viola Rieso 19 was in the Sat. paper, they where married Sat, & had the dinner Sun by her grandma Kus[illegible]. They had no dance. Cara Jean Hilpert had 14 guests Sat. afternoon at her birthday party, 6 yrs. old.
Wednesday, Nov. 2, 1932
We went to 6 o clock mass. Ed Meng was here yesterday morn, wanted to buy hog for market price; but papa won’t sell none like that yet, for that price, 335 100 lbs corn. Arthur Budde, Cecil Starr husband, was here trying to trade cars, he is working for Berdeker Garage at Red Bud. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up, she went to church. Henry & family came up too; they sold almost all of there beef at Waterloo today. We had popcorn. Bertille went up to the dentist & paid $11.50, he had costumers [sic] waiting this morn. Steve Rennecker brought our trees along from Red Bud, what Kirsch replaced. There was stock sale at Rutz’s barn today. Christ Buehler bought 7 hogs 125 to 150 lbs. for $35.00, Steve said, corns brought $45 & $50.00. Wincklein Auctioneer. George Boll went around town selling beef today, he sold hindquarters 15 front 13 soup meat 11¢.
