Tuesday, May 30, 1933

Deocration [sic] Day. We worked our truck patch & garden this morning. The St. Augustine Parish have pinic [sic] this afternoon & evening. There is School Pinic [sic] at Waterloo at the Kniting Mill Park. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came for the church pinic [sic], Miss Keller & Miss Kuhn stopped in awhile then went out to Aunt Mary’s for dinner. Bill Freund was here for supper, then we all went up to the pinic [sic] to, didn’t win anything, Mamie got a nice quilt. The Prairie Du Rocher band played. 

Sunday, Oct. 23, 1932

We went to Red Bud to church, took Mrs. Stauenfbiel along. They have euchre on Nov. 3, papa gave $1.00 for donation. Uncle Fred Aunt Mary & Miss Josie Keller & Miss Isabel Kuhn where all here for dinner & supper. We all went out to John Kaltwasser to gather some hickory nuts in his woods, but there wasn’t many there, about ½ bucket full; then from there we went over to Roy Stauenfbiels, but he say, there wasn’t any there either, Gus, was there, so they talked around awhile, then we stopped in at the church place, Frank Birkner & family came there to; the cemetery is plowed up again, the house is all stucco finished outside, & all hardwood floors up & down, plastered walls, new doors, furnace for the basement, the barn is all new boards all around it; everything fixed dandy. Henry & family came up this evening. This afternoon is Mission Rally at the Orphanage at Glen Addi, being Mission Sunday.

Friday, Oct. 21, 1932

Henry came up with a load of corn this morn. This afternoon we went out to Henry’s butchering, started about 2:30 & finished at 9:30, but we stayed till after 12 & had mid nite lunch. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary too, we played 2 games cards. Bertille got a letter today from Josie Keller, she & Miss Kuhn are coming out Sunday morn.

Monday, July 11, 1932

We washed, ironed, this morning. This afternoon we went to Red Bud took 3 hrs. potatoe [sic] along sold them at Brehmer’s store got 45¢ bu. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where up then went to Chris Buehler’s threshing, she first helped at Frank Birkner’s awhile, they was to have them for lunch yet, then go to Ronerberg’s & Oscar Birkner’s, but Aunt Mary had to help Frieda so she can go neither one of them places today, for Buehler’s have them all day. Bertille & Rosalia where at Wagner’s awhile. We finished digging the early potatoes this evening. Miss Elvira Kuhn of St. Louis is spending her vacation with Miss Wilma Reheis of here. Eggs 9¢ wheat 38¢. We got 6 little pigs born this morn.

Monday, May 11, 1931

Yesterday morning Henry Volkmann & wife while going home from church with the buggy met with a accident, there was a car coming from both directions, & the one drove to close & took the wheel off the buggy, it is just funny no one was hurt, & the buggy is altogether in a wreck, it happened almost in front Kuhn’s house, they settled it right there.  Bertille went to church this morning.  Papa & Rosalia went up in the woods.  Bertille went up to the school hall to see the play or rather moving picture show, given by the Cathestists [catechists] of New Mexico & Calif, Texas, it was good.  Tonight they will be in Paderborn.  The weather is sure funny, it rains, then the sun shines, real April & May Showers.  Harold Dueker is in St. Mary’s Elizabeth Hospital for appendix.  Rosalia & Bertille went up to Mamie’s took her along & then went to the show, the crowd increases every night, instead of giving the blanket away tonight, he is going to give 2 tomorrow night.  Vic. Eichenseer took his medicine & improved a lot.  Eggs are 12¢.

Papa went out to see Ben Kuhns this morning.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were here for supper.  We had 2 leghorn chicks for supper.

Wednesday, July 16, 1930

Jos. Schilling is threshing oats today but Henry had to help Joe Meuth’s, Willie Ganley, Bevirt and Reheis.  Rosalia baked peach pie this morning.  Papa, Bertille went to Waterloo with a load of wheat, and Rosalia stayed out at Henry’s that long.  Wheat is .75¢ bu.  Kuhns boys are plowing & they also got the oats threshers.

Tuesday, July 15, 1930

We are cooking plum jelly today.  Bertille went up town & got some sugar.  Papa is spreading lime dust this morning.  Kuhns are plowing over at Ed Mengs, they are going to stay another year yet.  I guess they will crop our ground again too.  Leona, Robert, & Floyd were here this afternoon, she came up & got the milk check.  Clarence Pabst was here this afternoon & brought the oats here from down at their place.  I saw in the paper that Joe Handrich fainted while out at thrashing, but they called for Dr. Pautler from Waterloo to come out.  He is allright again now.  They took William Braun to the hospital last Thurs. he got operated on appendicitis, he is as good as can be expected, last Sunday.  Papa went to Waterloo last Sun. & got the oil changed in the chev. 10,942 miles.  Steve Rennecker came over a little while this evening.

Monday, July 7, 1930

Henry is trashing this morning.  We all went out to Uncle Fred’s and Aunt Mary’s and got them then we all went to Henry’s.  Mrs. Gus Geodell and Mrs. Dan Geodelle were also helping.  They had them for lunch and dinner.  After dinner, Papa took the horses & colt & hitched them to the cultivator and drove them to Hecker.  We thrashed about 183 bus. out at Henry’s.  And here from Kuhns we thrashed about 166 bus. and from Pabst, 63 bus.  Kuhn’s thrashed altogether 2300 bus. wheat.  Papa hauled to Red Bud 8 bus. and got .78¢ that was Hecker wheat.

Friday, July 4, 1930

Today we can eat meat.  We are thrashing this morning again.  We had spring chicken for dinner.  We thrashed 139 bu. of wheat.  Kuhns thrashed altogether 2300 bu.  This evening we all went out to Henry’s.  Gus Geodelle and family, Conrad Geodelle and family, Miss Hilda Klube & boyfriend, Mr. Fred Lindes & mother were all there.  They played music, accordion, violin, guitar.  Today you can see all kinds of fireworks.  Papa & Rosalia fixed fences this afternoon.  There is picnic in Columbia, picnic & fish fry in Oak Grove Park, one in Belleville, and a good many other places.
