Henry & Floyd came up to see about getting to church tomorrow, they are going to christen the baby tomorrow afternoon at 2 oclock by Eschmann at Waterloo. Chas. Jung bought 4 dozen roasting ears corn for 50¢ wheat is 80¢ at Red Bud; eggs 10¢. Henry Metze & son of Smithon [sic] where here this afternoon on business. Pierre Laut & Roy Neff was selling chances, in a quilt for 10¢, for the pinic [sic] on Aug. 20 at Maniers Park. There is quite a few sales today, Mrs. Sensel estate is being sold at Waterloo today.

It is raining all day, lots of water. We killed a chicken for tomorrow Easter Sun. Miss Marcella’s Cortner 16 oldest daughter of Nick Cortner’s had her baby christened last Sun. afternoon & Qurin’s, Lena Roth, had there’s christened the other day. The rabbit laid 14 eggs this morning. We killed a chicken for tomorrow.

Saturday, March 25, 1933

Henry came up & got the hog. Papa & Bertille went to Belleville to a sale at the Merchants Transfer Storage Co; 3 different lots where sold, one bringing $75 – $85 – $80. We bought a buffet from the party that bought the lump for $5.00, it is nice. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where there too, she got a spring for $2.00; that is all we bought, took 24 doz. eggs along & got 9¢ in part trade. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary had dinner here; we got a jig saw puzzle of 200 pieces with a lb. coffee & .01 so we took one, boy! some puzzle. Mr. & Mrs. Joe Watchel & family, Mr. & Mrs. Robert Laut & family where here this evening playing pinochle; 6 handed. Henry Birkner’s have a little baby girl born this eve. it is also Oliver Birkners birthday it is to be christened tomorrow afternoon, Christ & Frieda Buehler sponsors. They called it Valeita Frieda.

Wednesday, Feb. 8, 1933

It is so cold, hard to keep the house warm, zero & below, water froze, in the kitchen, in the pipes. Gilbert Birkner was here & we took a chance from him for a quilt same as Cyril’s. They have as high as 200 chances to get divided between 10 boys, each are having 20 numbers, then is $10.00 for each quilt. We have 3 hens setting & 2 more over to set. There is to be a euchre in Paderborn given by St. Michael’s Church. Adm. 25 & cold. Miss Alvira Braun oldest daughter of Phil Braun is now employed in St. Louis doing housework. Bill Haudrich’s christened there boy, Leon Paul, she is now home from the hospital.

Wednesday, February 1, 1933

Rosalia & Bertille went out to Uncle Freds remodeled dresses, had dinner & lunch. Bertille baked lemon pie there. We heard the Accidentals, Chas Hill & them played over the radio at noon hr; they had a good many tunes requested from all over, some from Waterloo, Sly Miller was one having his birthday today, they advertised the dance what he is giving at Brezzy [sic] Hill tonite. Mr. & Mrs. H. M. Hill & John Horn, from Hecker, & some from St. Louis, East St. Louis, Mo, different parts of Illinois, it was nice. Papa took dinner along & went out in the woods. Adolph Spalt’s had a pond digging frolic yesterday. Dr. Irwin died & will be buried Fri. morning. Mr. & Mrs. Wm. Grohmann christened there baby girl Lucille Mildred last Sunday. Mr. August Ettling’s mother died at Smithon [sic]. There is quite a few people that is on the sick list at present. It is in the paper that a $25,000 suit was brought against Mr. & Mrs. Julius Armbruster of Smithon [sic] by Dominick Klein, for slander, saying that Klein’s owend [sic] a couple farms, then go out begging from people, or state.

Monday, Jan. 30, 1933

We washed, ironed. Beautiful day like spring. Papa went up in the woods, this afternoon. Louis Dehn is butchering his hog here at Renneckers 600 lbs. Robert Laut is also, he got 2 hogs from Christ Buehlers. Edwin Reheis had there little baby bay christened the other Sun at Smithon [sic] by Rev. Hosto, called it Emil Fred, was sponsor. Papa brought 1 gal. milk along for the pigs. We went out to Henry’s this evening. Papa & Henry went up to Joe Mueths, this 12 o’clock, he is pretty bad, the doctor gives him up, he breathes so loud, & some times not at all, girls are all at home.

Thursday, Feb. 11, 1932

It rained last night. We heard this morning that Ed. Neff’s wife died last night, from blood poison & the flu. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary & we all went there this evening, they brought her home from Waterloo about 5:30 we stayed till 1 o’clock had supper there. The baby they got christened Wed. morning, Edward Joseph, we heard Ed Parker & wife where the sponsors, it is just about 11 days old. Papa went up in the woods this afternoon, we went along out to Henry’s that long.

Saturday, Oct. 10, 1931

Ambrose Doyle’s have a little baby girl christened Doris Jean last Sun.  Papa went up town, he brought us a bucket water along, for the premium on dinnerbell butter boxes.  Harry Kammler has a confettie [sic] & serpentine dance this evening.  Victor Geodelle is giving a birthday dance at Brezzy [sic] Hill, adm. 25¢, musci [sic] by the White Ducks, Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up & we all went, it sure was a crowd.  Harry Kammler’s was a crowd too according to machines.  Papa was at George Boll’s this afternoon & settle up with him.

Friday, Sept. 11, 1931

Papa is hauling wood again today.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where up for supper.  We went over to look at Mrs. Rennecker’s flower, it opens up & blooms till mignight, [sic] get’s as big as a saucer, then goes shut.  Joe Wacthel’s got there boy christened Delmar.

Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1931

Papa is hauling wood today.  The bells where tolling this morn. at our church for the first time, for Mrs. William Braun, she died this morn. around 6 o clock at the Belleville Hospital.  Kock got her from there & took her to Red Bud & fixed her up, brought her home around 1o o clock, Henry & Leona, Rosalia, Bertille, Aunt Mary went down to see her this evening, there wasn’t many people there because they didn’t bring her home till late.  They have 7 children, oldest is 13 & youngest 4.  Joe Watchels have a little baby boy born Sun. 6 Sept.  Lester Gregson’s have a little boy since last week Thurs. 2 [crossed out] or 3 Sept, they christined [sic] it Virgil Lee, Lee Gregson & Agnes where sponsors.  Jack & Willie Ganley & Fr. Grooten where by Hill’s this evening.
