Today is birthday Henry’s 28 yrs. old & also the 4th wedding anniversary. We went out this evening, ice cream, cake where served to the following: Mr. Gus Geodelle & family, Henry Birkner’s family, Albert Cleveland’s family, Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary. George Wagner got a fork here this morn. to straw potatoes at Chas. Wagner’s.

We went to Red Bud. Levi Gregson came here a little while, the rest where at church. George Wagner’s family prepared dinner, chicken, etc. & took it all down to Chas. Wagner, 25 Silver Wedding Ann. the whole relation, when it was supposed to be a surprized [sic], but I don’t think it was, they found it out. Three fellows from St. Joe where here & looked at the colts. We all went over to Stere’s & sat on his porch, the sun got too hot on ours. This eve, we went out to Uncle Fred’s, Chris Buehler’s family also came, we at popcorn, beer, & water.

Today is town election, Steve Rennecker, Ed Neff, Monike, are the judges. Ted Eichenseer & Phil Braun running opposition for town clerk. Ted received it by 6 votes. There where 99 votes cast. Rosalia & Bertille went out to help Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary, paint the floor in the big room around the edge & polish furniture. We had lunch, dinner & lunch. This evening they came up & got some enamel. George Wagner was here wanted to borrow setting hens, but we have none. A man here begged for something to eat, & one wanted money, his legs where gone, came here in a car, last year he was here too. Joe Watchel boy has pneumonia pretty bad.

Went to Red Bud. Church in Hecker, this morning is 9 & 11 o clock, because he [Fr. Grootens?] couldn’t be home, he was gone some place. In Waterloo the children are making there solemn communion. Joe Gregson & Lester & Lee & Rob where here looked at the colts, but it was to much money for him. We went out Uncle Freds, for dinner & supper. Henry came there too awhile, he had been up at Floraville to see Kerculeis, he bought his pigs from Henry & a heifer, $15 & pigs $3.00 apiece. Maryben Pickett & family came there too & wanted to rent there house in Hecker, but he won’t rent it out. Mrs. George Wagner called up & said we should come over there for a game of cards, so we & Rennecker’s, Bill Fristche’s, & Autheo [?] Mehrmann where there. Bertille got toothache. Mrs. Wagner was lucky to have 1500 trump.

Easter. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stayed with the boy’s while we went to church. They & Henry & Leona where all here for dinner & supper. The rabbit laid so many eggs. It looked cloudy this morning, but later the sun came out & made it a real nice Easter. We went over to Rennecker’s, this evening, played pinochle. Bertille held 1500 diamonds & won 3 games out of 5. Wagner’s where at Bill Fristche, her & Mrs. Chas. Wagner went together & had a big celebration for all the children that got confirmed, & minister, & all the relation, & childrens parents.

Eggs where only 8¢ yesterday, lowest they ever were. In last nights paper it was that Colonil [sic] Lindbergh’s baby Augustus Charles Jr. got kidnaped [sic] of it bed, while sleeping between 7 & 10 oclock, there is a big piece in there, but they have no clue of it yet. Joe Braun is moving his family & thing to Fayentiville [sic] where he is now employed with the creamery there, as clerk. John Reagan moved in Joe Braun’s house today. Ben Heyl stopped here this morning to put some water in his radiator, because it always leaked out. George Wagner’s family & Steve Rennecker & wife where here playing pinochle this evening. Eggs are still 8¢.
Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1932
The groundhog didn’t see his shadow today so we have spring weather. We went to Red Bud to Hellmers funeral this morn. George Wagner came over when we came home & told us Leona was ringing for us. Steve was over this afternoon awhile. Henry brought a load of corn up & took his oats along home. The Ellis Grove Bank was turned over to Chester last Sat. Steve was here again this eve. we played pinochle. Leslie Siebert the Eddleman Bread driver this morn. tried to fire the furnace at his home with gasoline & he caught on fire, his hands, & clothing where burned severely.

Papa went up to the Farmers Telephone meeting at Griffins this afternoon. They elected Adolph Spalt pres. Kenneth Kemp vice presi. Purtle Sec. Ben Heyl Tres. We & Renneckers went over to Wagner’s & played cards, Steve had 1500 trump & missed 1000 aces, in one deal, didn’t see them. It broke up about even.
Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1932
We went to Belleville with the eggs & some meat sold all the eggs 18 doz. for 20¢. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here, he paid his tax to Griffin. Aunt Mary & Rosalia where over at Wagner’s awhile. Fr. Sonnen the Paderborn priest died. We got some boxes at Belleville this morn. one for Uncle Fred, the other one for us to smoke our summer sausage in. Henry & family & we went all was at Aunt Mary’s, playing cards. Rosalia had 150 trump in spades. Just like spring.
Monday, Jan. 11, 1932
We butchered 2 hogs today. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary, Henry & family where here helping, had lunch, dinner, supper. We grind the sausage & beef through with Eichenseer’s grinder & little gasoline engine finished in about ½ hr. had a little bad luck to start with. George Wagner was here & Hy. Armstutz a little while.
