We went to Red Bud church this morn. Christ Buehler’s family were all at Red Bud church too they are finished in Hecker, Fr. Grootens told him either pay pew rent or take his children out of school, so tomorrow he will sent his kids to Red Bud school. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here for dinner, this afternoon we went out there had supper, Uncle Adam & Emil where also there, played pinochle. Ed Meng was here this morn, to see Uncle Fred. Tonight Mr. & Mrs. Steve Rennecker & George Wagner’s family where here played cards. Steve held 1000 Aces & George had 300 pinochle & 150 trumps. & In the same game Rosalia had 1500 trump. The St. Mary’s players are giving a play in the School Hall tonight Adm. 35.

We went to Red Bud church. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here for dinner. Uncle Adam & Emil came, they where here awhile, it started to rain, they went home. The rest of us had a pinochle game. Mr. & Mrs. Steve Rennecker came over this evening, then we played 4 games 4 handed pinochle & Steve & Bertille lost every one. We heard Louis Braun broke his arm in cranking a machine, he was sent home from school, now all Phil Braun’s children don’t go to school no more unless he asks Fr. Grootens for permit sometime!

Papa got crushing done. He went out to Henry’s & to Uncle Adam’s took his scraper back; then he was by Ettling showed him his road, because he plowed a furrow over in the alfafa patch. This evening we all & Henry’s family went over to Uncle Fred’s listen to there radio. We played 5 handed pinochle, Bertille won 1 & Leona & Henry lost, we just played 2 games.

We went out to Henry’s butchering the old sow. We stayed for supper, papa & Rosalia went home & done the feeding, then came back for supper, then he fixed the meat sugar cured. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary helped too. Uncle Adam’s butched [sic] one today to, got it from Blackburn’s.

It rained nearly all night. Uncle Adam come, Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary, we all went into Belleville to Jenny Kemp’s funeral, they took her from the Gundlach Chapel to St. George’s Episcopal Church, then to the Village cemetery of Hecker, Emil was one of the ballpearber, [sic-pallbearer] only one from around here. It wasn’t a very large funeral.

We went to church at Waterloo. Then went out to Uncle Fred’s for dinner & supper, from there drove up to Ettling’s, to see if they could help dig a pond tomorrow, then went to see Henry’s & then Uncle Adam’s, to get his scraper. Sig Dudenhoeffer & co from St. Louis where out at Henry’s, awhile yesterday. Rosalia & Bertille went to Kammler’s Dance tonight. Peter Melody’s playing, it was a pretty good crowd.
Thursday, Nov. 5, 1931
Today is Bertille’s birthday 17 yrs. old. Papa went out & got load of wood this morn. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where up today, he cleaned a little on the sewer in the basement. Bertille went along out with papa & picked hicorky [sic] nuts up. We went over to look at Rennecker’s cistern, Pete Birkner is fixing it, brick cemeted [sic] wall. Henry brought a load of corn this evening. We all & Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary went out to see Uncle Adam & Emil tonight. Emil is working for Joe Schilling’s shocking corn. Schilling’s have a Chev. second hand brought from Eck, Wiehl, from Waterloo. George Parker’s are building a chicken house. Eggs are 27¢ today. Papa was out at Willie Ganley’s, he lost 2 hogs & some more ready to die, they have the colerha [sic- cholera], he got them vaccaineted [sic], some where sick then already.

Papa & Rosalia went to Red Bud church this morning. Bertille went to Hecker, there where 8 children, 4 boy’s & 4 girls made there Solemn Holy Com. this morn. – & also some made there first Holy Com. This afternoon the 8th graders received there diploma. We all had dinner, beef soup by Uncle Freds, across the street today. This afternoon Uncle Adam & Emil came & Bill Freund for lunch, Frank Dudenhoeffer & Mr. Woodruft, Gusta’s nephew. They where at the pinic [sic], the Evangelicals had cold supper & pinic [sic] today, we where there a while. Fr. Grooten or congregation gave a quilt for them to raffle in Bluey, Elmer Kammler’s wife won it. The Wedding quilt was won by Oliver Birkner. It was to cold for pinci [sic- picnic] today. Papa took care of the kids, when Henry & Leona came up, they went to the pinci [sic] awhile too. Rheinhardt furnished the musci [sic] till 7 o’clock.

Today is Uncle Adam’s birthday. He is 82 yrs. old. The dance which was supposed to be this evening in the brick house was posponed [sic] until further notice. The Hecker baseball team was to give it. There is a show in the Public Schools Yard tonight Jackson’s Wonder Show. Rosalia & Bertille went everything free, for a week, only medicine, Indian Herbs $1.00 bottle last night. He took orders for 9 bottles, he could only sell 10 that the limit, we before it was over, it was to cold. We covered our tomato plants this evening but I don’t think it will freeze. We moved out little chickens over in the chicken house this morning, it was raining, so we couldn’t turn them out of the coops Jack there. Papa got a letter today from Mr. Tillman of Belleville the Farm Bureau Advisor, & also a check amounting $1.44 for the repair bill for the Chev. Accident with us & Peter Blank of Freeburg. We had to lose 20%. The bill amounted to $1.80, so we received $1.44.
