Beautiful day warm 57 [degrees]. Bert [Bertille] washed, ironed, patched. Chas. Helfrich came looked at potatoes. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary send in a request to German Band at noon program today for Josie Kellers birthday today. Leo & family came this eve. Marita sure is getting big & fat.
Tuesday, Feb. 7, 1939
Nice day, washed ironed et. Leo & family came this eve; him & pap took Whip. took a shoat to there [sic] place, he bought one from here; couldn’t take it in his car.
Sunday, Feb. 5, 1939
Went to mass; took quite awhile had to read a letter from Bischof [sic – Bishop], & read yearly account. Leo & family came took us along to Uncle Freds, had dinner & supper. Bill [Klein] also came in afternoon, took us home. Went to Belleville to play given by St. Mary’s players; Name “Busy Honeymoon.” Steve Orlet was also in it; directed by Fr. Ratterman, & musci [sic] by St. Mary Choir & Glee Club & children was good. Steve Rennecker came here, Gus Edler was out & left money there by him for Uncle Fred. Mrs. Frank Birkner is pretty ill with flu, they don’t let no one in to see her, pretty weak. Named there baby Marlene – Maggie Schaefer & Ben Schilling were the sponsors. Beautiful day warm.
Friday, Feb. 3, 1939
St. Blase Day. Henry & Leona & Bert [Bertille] went to Belleville, Robert & Billy [Willis] stayed here. Floyd went to school. Rob. wasn’t feeling very good. Leo & family came to left Marita here & then went to Belleville to, she got new coat. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came this afternoon, also Emil. Cold today & frozen hard, everybody out. Edwin Reheis is pretty ill with pneumonia, temperature is below normal, down to 87; the children are also pretty sick yet. Bill & Al Karban were here while, played 2 games pinochle.
Thursday, Jan. 26, 1939
Nice day warm. A. [Aunt] Mary’s birthday 62 yrs. old. We went out this afternoon, had supper. Went with Whip. roads aren’t so nice. Pap went to Larsons by Burksville bought 8 pigs $34.00. Leo & family, Bill [Klein], came this eve; we quilted & played cards. Red Bud church has euchre tonite. Frank Birkners have a baby girl since Tues. also Oliver Quirins a girl Belleville hospital since Jan 21. Billy [Willis] has got pink eye now. Floyd arm is sore.
Tuesday, Jan. 24, 1939
Went to Leo’s butchering, not so cold 28. Roads are little slippy, we put chains on Whip, got there O.K. little muddy coming home; got through alright; made summer sausage to; Catholic Euchre in Waterloo tonite.
Sunday, Jan. 22, 1939
Went to mass; rather cold again for change, its 20 [degrees] above this morn. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stayed awhile, went home. Leo & family came this afternoon, went to Red Bud, to Dr. Pautler got vaccinated, that is Leo & Marita $1.50; not good to all get it at same time. Bill [Klein] came, he went to Dr. Eckert’s his folks all were vaccinated today. Eckert does it little different then Pautler; he also charges $1. person. We got Emil over for a pinochle game this eve; about 5 or 6 games.
Saturday, Jan. 21, 1939
Pap went up to mass of Mary Grossheim funeral, pretty large, pallbearers were Gus Kabureck & son, Fred Neff, Con. Mueth, Jake Schaefer & Henry & one pap didn’t know. Frs. Orlet & Fr. Ratermann assisted Fr. Aydt; Mary wanted that way; Fr. Aydt made a very nice sermon, praised her. she was awful generous towards the parish, she bought & donated The Mother of Perpetual Help Statue. Josie Keller came out bout 11 o’clock had dinner here, called Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary to come up, played cards all afternoon & part of eve. All had supper here, she brought a cake out for A. [Aunt] Marys birthday celebrating it today. Hecker general telephone meeting brought a quite a few people to town this afternoon to elect officers & operator. Lizzie Boll received it again against Geo. Wagner 14 – Rapp 5. Lizzie got 23 votes.
Friday, Jan. 20, 1939
Leo & Rose [Rosalia] Wedding Ann.; but to muddy roads, can’t get there. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came, he took some wheat to Waterloo, she helped quilt. Pap went to Farmers’ meeting at Kammlers. Henry came on business. Boys got sore eyes, pink eye they call it, school is closed for couple days, most all the children have it. Closed today.
