We washed & hung it in the basement this morning. Papa went to Waterloo to get his watch & get the Whippet fixed. We fried down a quart of shoulder meat this morning. Today is Frances Schilling’s birthday, she is 24 years old. We took the screens off this afternoon. This evening Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary was here, they brought us a liver & blood sausage along up. Henry & Emil were also here. Henry sold his boar pig to Ed Meng it weighted 174 lbs. & at .9¢ a lb. Eggs are .33¢ at the store.

Bertille was at church this morning. Papa & Rosalia went to Belleville again today with the eggs. Last week they took Mrs. Owen Fahey & Mrs. Rose Crook to the hospital in Red Bud. Mrs. Fahey is to get operated on appendix & Mrs. Albert Crook has heart & kidney trouble. There was no funeral in the Hecker Catholic Church during 1930 church year. There was a man here at noon and wanted to sell some rugs & 3 fur coats, but you had to make your price on them, we didn’t take any it looked kind of suspicious, like it might of been stolen goods, the man was from California, and has intended to go to Canada & Montreal. There were 2 men in the car. Papa & Rosalia sold 18 doz. eggs for .40¢ a doz. to some customers in Belleville. Ed Meng was over a little while & took a look at our hogs. He wanted to know if Henry still had his for sale, so Bertille called out to Henry’s & found out. Papa went over to Meng’s & told him & also took his post hole digger back again. The paper says 20 above zero tonight.
Sunday, Nov. 2, 1930
Today is Harold Hellmer’s birthday. Henry & family were here for dinner today. After dinner we played ball. It is such a nice day. Charles Schilling & Odillo Eichenseer was riding around this afternoon they went down as far as Meng’s road and turned around & he missed the culpert with one wheel and it went down, Odillo got the truck and pulled him out. At 2 o’clock was church, so we went to church & after church to the cemetery. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary went to the cemetery first then they came up here, then to church, then to Mrs. Threfall’s shooting match. We had company from St. Louis, they first was at the house, but we weren’t at home, so they came up to church & then they went along to the cemetery & then they came back up to Hecker again & had lunch with us. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up again afterwards from the shooting match. There was nobody there. The people from St. Louis were Mr. & Mrs. Sig. Dudenhoeffer, and friends Mrs. Karmer and son Harry & Jake Becherle from Germany, he is just over 4 months now. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary had supper here and then they went to Willie Birkner’s it was their wedding anniversary. Tonight Harry Kammler has a dance again. People Jane Orchestra playing. Bill Matzenbacher, Ed. Wittenaurs, Mrs. Threfall all had shooting matches this afternoon.

Ed. Meng & Johnny Wertz was here this morning & got the lime dust spreader. Today a year ago our curtain was put up and our linoleums laid. The weather is awful gloomy. It is raining a little now. There is no devotion tonight on account of the weather.

We canned beets & sauerkraut today. Leona & the kids were up this afternoon, but they didn’t get off of the machine, she came up to get some things from the store. It is nice & warm again this afternoon. Ed Meng was over tonight and wanted to know if he could get the lime dust spreader tomorrow. In Belleville everybody is donating for the jobless.

Papa went over to Ed Meng’s to get the grass mower this morning, he is going to cut the grass on the north side of the house. Rosalia & Bertille washed today. Papa is hauling wood this afternoon. Rosalia got the mail & took 8 doz. eggs to the store & got .24¢ a doz.

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary, Henry & family were all up for church this morning & went back home again. Ed Meng was over a little while this evening. There sure were a lot of cars passed here today.

Rosalia & Bertille went out to Henry’s to help cook apple butter, she got 10 gallons. Mrs. Geodelle was also out, we cook a kettle full of soap, and washed this afternoon & scrubbed the rooms & porches for Leona. We had lunch & dinner out there. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were here. We found 19 eggs. Egges are .20¢ a doz. I seen in the paper that $500,000 as fire sweeps Quality & Oakland Foundries at Belleville yesterday. Papa is discing the chicken yards. Henry Meng was over watching Papa disc a little while.

Papa went to cut corn but he came back about 8:30. Bertille went up town to get coal oil and a few things. Mrs. Ed Meng & Clifford went to do Belleville shopping and visiting today. Papa went back to see Hempe’s after dinner. I seen in the paper that Mr. & Mrs. Anselm Krehrer celebrated their 25th Wedding anniversary on Sun. Aug. 24. All the relatives gathered to take part in the happy event. Rebumen [Ruben?] Kammler and a Dr. from Belleville motored to the Ozarks over the weekend. This evening we went out to Uncle Fred’s to help him unload & carry their victrola in the house. They were at Belleville this afternoon and bought one from Rhein’s for $10.00 with 18 records. They have 2 right nice pieces they are, “You Don’t It Not Much.” & “Lonesome Tonight.” Bertille read in the Republican paper Mr. Henry Eichleman & Doris Einwich were married Aug. 26 in Rev. Eschman’s parsonage. They took a honeymoon trip to South Dakota. Mrs. Elizabeth Krack died she was 88 years old. If she would of lived until Sunday she would have been 89 years. She stayed by Mrs. Hy. Hellmer her daughter. She was buried last Thursday morning. Otto Susewind & Catherine Schafer close friends of Ewinich and Eichleman were best man and bridesmaid. I seen in the paper that Hy. Biffar had a weed fire. It destroyed the house & barn on the premises of the Ahern Bros. who reside in St. Louis. With the help of some farmers ploying furrows around tracts. Besides the buildings, quite a bit of hay in the barn was also burned. Mrs. Alvin Franke nee Geodelle died and was buried Monday. She was 37 years old. And is survived by her husband & 2 children one son Hamilton and daughter Mary Louise. She also leaves four brothers Emil & Ted of St. Louis and Victor & Jacob of Waterloo & 4 sisters Mrs. Wm. Kolmer, Mrs. L. Matzenbacher, Mrs. Art. Bestman & Miss Olivia all of Waterloo, Ill. Mrs. Cornelia Petria is working at the knitting mill.

I have seen the paper that Arthur Matlock from Waterloo have a little boy at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, it was born last Monday. Nick Schaefer’s second youngest daughter, Maggie, was taken to the hospital last Sat. night and was operated on for appendix. Henry Meng got his finger smashed between 2 large rocks, he now has his arm & fingers in a sling. The St. Louis baseball team played here Sunday with Hecker the score was 8 to 15 in favor of Hecker. It is reported that Clem Parker lost a valuable horse last Sat. from heat. Bertille was up town and got the paper this morning. Mrs. Gene Meckler from Waterloo, they took her to the Hospital at Red Bud. We baked cookies, washed, ironed, cleaned upstairs today. It is Albert Cleveland’s birthday today. Yesterday it was their wedding anniversary 18 years married & tomorrow night they are going to have a dance. Emma Braun brought Mrs. Rennecker home this evening. Papa & Rosalia went down to Geo. Vonderheit’s this afternoon and got the spring buggy home, what Papa bought for .30¢. Steve Rennecker and his wife were over this evening a little while. Roman Meng came over and told us that our colt was out, something was chasing it, I guess a dog. It ran through the wire fence, it has a cut on the breast & one on leg behind. We put some lard & turpentine on it right away. Mrs. Rennecker said that Mr. Dehn ain’t no better yet, no changes she said. Dr. Eckert’s father is awful bad sick too.
