Monday, Feb. 12, 1934

Lincoln’s Birthday. Holiday. Corn & hog meeting in Public School House. Henry came & him & papa went down, to sign up. Henry had dinner here, then they went back again, took all day to get it finished, Ms. Jerome Vogt helped them, & Miller was the man. Parker, Papenberg, Wittenauer, were also helpers. Quite a few dances all over this evening, before lent.

Wednesday, March 8, 1933

We washed, ironed. George Boll & Ike Napier was here & looked at our fat hog, they bought it market price $4.45 or $4.50 going to get it tomorrow morning. We lost 2 little chicks so far, out of 407. We have 10 little pigs born today but 3 she laid on, so we only have 7 left so far. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up this even, she cut Rosalia’s dress out, used Josie Gregson’s pattern. Rosalia & Bertille went along up to church with Aunt Mary to lent devotion, benediction & sermon.

Wednesday, March 1, 1933

Today is Ash Wed. lent starts. Henry Armstutz came & told papa to work on the cistern if he could, so him & Uncle Fred helped, 10 men altogether, digging it out for fire protection in town. Aunt Mary & Josie went to church, & then come here, for dinner & supper; she brought a spread along what she is stitching; this evening they went to Buehler’s, Christ’s birthday. We went to church this eve, & received the ashes.

Friday, March 25, 1932

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came over this morning he helped to move the hogs at the straw shed & ring them. They stayed in Hecker, nearly all day. We went to Red Bud to church. Bertille helped Aunt Mary scrub. Rosalia & papa went out to Henry’s he helped him, then he brought the mule home. Gus Geodelle’s where there too. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up, tonite for church, then they went to Wm. Birkner’s, Oliver’s birthday, school children where present, playing games. We got 67 chick from our incubators, & out of set 110 eggs.

Thursday, March 24, 1932

This morning we went to church, communion at 8 oclock, & mass at 9 o clock. We had dinner over at Uncle Freds. This afternoon Bert Thompson brought 2 colts & got 3 hogs, even up trade. This afternoon we went to Mrs. Dugan to see if she would buy our eggs, but she had plenty, so we took them to Waterloo to Krogers got 10¢, had 51 doz. eggs, then papa & Gus Geodelle went out to Henry Ambrecht west of Waterloo & looked at a mule, seen him work, then tonight Henry took the buggy & went after him, we came home & papa & Uncle Fred went back to Henry Ambrecht again got 2 hogs & mule for $35.00. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary had supper with us, we took Uncle Freds car & went out to Henry’s, Bobby’s birthday 6 year. old. cake, lemonade served. Rosalia got a letter from Rosie Meuth inviting us all to come to Oak Grove Mar. 30, for her wedding dance, Osie Matzenbacher. We went to church in Waterloo awhile this afternoon, till papa got back. Ella Stalheber was here but we weren’t at home.

Sunday, March 20, 1932

We went to Red Bud to church. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here, they had dinner over at there house, & supper here & also Henry’s family where here for dinner & supper. The rabbit laid 4 eggs for the boys, they had lots of fun. There where 2 ladies here bought 4 doz. eggs @ 15¢ doz. This evening after we had supper, Aunt Mary, Rosalia & Bertille went up to Lester Gregson’s & got a dress pattern from here, for Bertille size 34 just fits fine. Aunt Mary went to church, & we played 4 handed pinochle, 2 games & then 1.5 handed when she came back, we had a light lunch, they went home in Hecker stayed all night.

Wednesday, Feb. 24, 1932

We washed this morn. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary was here for dinner, she helped us put our quilt in the frame & helped work on it this afternoon. Papa & Uncle Fred went out to stake Ettling’s road off. Elmer Matzenbacher was here & brought our clover seed, $9.00. Louis Armstutz was here awhile. We went to Red Bud to lenten service this evening.

Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1932

We washed & hung it in the basement, because the weather is rather disagreeable out. Papa got his hair cut this afternoon. Elmer Kammler said his wife & Mrs. Laut where both down in bed with the flu. Robert Laut paid $400.00 for Wm. Laut’s property here in town. Mr. & Mrs. Laut are already living down in Elmer’s house, they will have sale. Henry was here awhile this evening, he went to Hy. Hepp’s to get some leghorn hatching eggs for 11¢ doz. He say’s the boys have the wooping[sic] cough now. We where going to Red Bud to lent service, but Henry came then made it to later.

Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1931

Today lent begins.  Papa went to church this morning.  Rosalia is up again today.  Osie Neff moved today in Lutz’s house here in Hecker.  Bertille went to church this evening for lent services.  It is raining again tonight.  We put out cabbage plants out in a bunch today.  It is too wet to set them out yet.

Sunday, Feb. 15, 1931

Papa went to church this morning the rest of us didn’t go.  Tonight the Ladies Aid is giving a euchre & Bluey in Kammler’s Hall.  There is also one in Tiptown & tomorrow night the Catholics got one.  A rush before lent.  Schneiders got the measles also.  The way they say. Roy Staunebiels kids & Cletus Reagan also got the measles now.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary went to Armstutz before the euchre tonight, because we got the measles here.  Rosalia is feeling alright but the measles ain’t gone away yet.  There were 18 tables tonight at the euchre and Bluey.
