Pap went to Red Bud took 443 lbs. clover seed to Schrieber’s. for 8 1/2 [cents]. Melvin Wagner has the measles, got a sign up, Osies Neff’s, Weigands, Geodelle’s, Klotz’s kids all have them now. Bert [Bertille] send an order to Chicago Mail Or; one to Si & Freckles at Quincy, describing Hecker; one to Ohio to a Oxydol Advertisment [sic]. A fellow here to see about clover seed again. Myrtle Neff is pretty sick.

Saturday, Jan. 15, 1938

Pap went in woods, came home for dinner, & went back again this afternoon. A fellow here this morn; wanted some thing to eat. Mrs. Aggie Ratz Doyle was operated for appendix last week at Belleville hospital; & Mrs. Wilbur Heyl was opperated [sic] for appendix also at St. Mary’s Hospital in E. St. Louis. There is a show at Waterloo put on by Nobbe’s, advertising John Deere; implements etc, starting at 9 this morn. serving dinner & movie pictures, etc. Adm. free tickets. Henry & family came this eve. we went along with them to Uncle F. [Fred]

Sunday, Jan. 9, 1938

Snowed a little this morn; but turned out to be nice, got warmer. Went to Red Bud to mass. Went out to Uncle Fred’s for dinner; A. [Aunt] Mary isn’t so well these days.

Friday, Jan. 7, 1938

Cleaned, took tree down etc. Pap cleaned barn. A man stopped in, to find the way to Mrs. Hy Braun. Mr. John Horn is very ill at present. Ed. Cortner lost small shoats – 8.

Wednesday, Jan. 5, 1938

Butchered 2 hogs, 223 lb. each. Henry, Leona & Billy [Willis], Leo & Rose [Rosalia], Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary, all helped. had lunch & dinner. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stayed for supper, sugar cured meat this eve. Hill was here collecting telephone dues, got meeting at Kammlers tonite, pap didn’t go, electing new officers this eve. for the new year. John Horn is pretty sick; doctor was there this morning. Eggs 23 [cents] hogs $8.40.

Friday, Dec. 31, 1937

Cleaned etc. Henry stopped in, got crushing done. Mrs. Geodelle is sick. Bert [Bertille] got mail, New Years Greeting from Helfrich girls, & card from Dupo, having the last raffle, for the church forbid it now, 1st prize quilt 2 $25 – 3 $20 – 4 – $10 – 5 – $5 to be raffled tonite but we got it to late, can’t send it back – $1. they wanted. Seen in Waterloo paper transfer of 105 acres from Emil Brand to Ed. Brand; never heard nothing about it; Received enveplope [sic] from Fr. Spors for Sunday collections 50 [cents] every Sun. it says.

Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1937

Foggy day again. Bert [Bertille] washed. Emil came over awhile this morn. Pap & him walked up to Frank Emery’s funeral this afternoon 2 o’clock services at house; then to city cemetery, he was 63 yrs. of age. had been ruptured some time ago; Pallbearers were Vic Eichenseer, Jac. Neff, Steve Rennecker, Oscar Klotz, Adolph Lother, Bill Fritsche. Wagner boy’s came got 4 doz. eggs for Mehrmann 25 [cents] today. Mrs. Bill Kaiser was taken to hospital in ambulance yesterday, double pneumonia, for 6 days; had Dr. Frein & nurse out yesterday also. Mr. Martin Fritsche here in town also has double pneumonia; so much sickness around & real weather for it to. Miss Kate McDermott who was making her home in St. Louis past while, suffered stroke Sun. morn, was taken to Red Bud hospital, were there she died, will be buried tomorrow morn, at Tipton church & cemetery at Koch [? – unclear]. Wagner’s family came this eve; we play 7 games pinochle, ladies winning every game.

Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1937

Send cards, etc. Beautiful day. Decorated etc. scrubbed front porch. Arlene Klotz is sick in bed with cold as Renneckers, quite few people have measles they say at Red Bed & Mayben Picketts school will be closed, on that account. The Catholic school children have there program & Santa Claus tonite. There is no school Picketss girls have the measles at present.

Sunday, Dec. 19, 1937

Went to Red Bud. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came down, had dinner here, we played cards. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped awhile; this morn. We went to Paderborn, closing of Mission church was crowded. Fr. Aydt, Spors priests present. Fr. Teonnies is very ill; Missionary was pretty nice & made good sermons.

Friday, Dec. 17, 1937

Bernice got doz. eggs. Raining all day; getting colder, this eve. Emil & Josie & Clara & Lee left last Mon. morn. went to B in Alb. by Ed & Carrie, came back this eve. about 3:30; sure had some trip, was so icy Mon, & Tues. & raining all time. Pap got mail. Was in Messenger Fr. Teonnis of Paderborn is in hospital.
