We washed. Mr. Hill came for news. Mr. & Mrs. John Myerscough, & Peter came up to Hecker, thought the funeral was today but it isn’t till tomorrow; so they came here, & had dinner with us. Mr. Wil Harbaugh, mineral feed man, stop & gave us a call; we took our Christmas tree down. They took Mrs. Philip Braun to Oakville, [Okwaville] to a hospital; she has rehumatism [sic] so awful bad, Rita went along yesterday.

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary had dinner here, played cards. Miss Josie Keller & Isabel Kuhn stopped on a short visit, they spent Sun, & today at Ben Heyl’s Ben’s birthday yesterday. Mr. Hill got news here. Josie took 8 doz. egg along, 20¢. Father Stern read of the annual report of the congregation.

Mr. Hill was here to get news. It sure is cold this morn. Ignatz Neff on his way to 5 o clock mass yesterday morn, ran over a fox by Levi Gregsons & killed it, took it along home with him. Nic Helfrichs has coon lunch, the other nite & beer, a few from town was there, & what a time! Mr. Ed Neff & Bertha Helfrich were published first time last Sunday.

Mr. Hill was around gathering news. George Wagner’s birthday was yesterday & Bernice today. They also had a program at the Public School last nite. There was a lady here selling “German Cleaner.” Mr. Ed. Weber, & Louis Armstutz was around get signers for the fire protection in Hecker, 10¢ mo.; they are going to use the fire engine, have 6 active members; Papa paid up for 1 year starting Jan. Leona send the bread along up with Helfrich today. We washed; fried in bacon & sausage; nice day. We find 2 doz. egg a day.

We washed, ironed. Oscar Klotz was here, to see if we wanted to buy corn. Klotz has some to sell; for 40¢ bu., but we got ours now. Mr. Hill was here gathering news for the paper. It is an awful nice day, warm. Josie Keller is spending, Sun. & Mon. at Ben Heyl’s & Tues. at Triveollers at Red Bud, then she is going back home again. Kenneth Kemp got a new coupe Pontiac cars. We sawed wood this afternoon. Henry, Cleveland, Emil. Uncle Fred helped. Aunt Mary stayed here, we put her quilt in the frame across the street, they had supper here, then we played 5 hand pinochle.

We butchered 1 hog & so did Uncle Fred. Henry & family where all here for lunch, dinner & supper. Henry went home & then came back in evening, played 6 hand pinochle, Aunt Mary had 1500 trump. Mr. Hill was here to get news. George Wagner got 3 lb. sausage.

We washed, Mrs. Kurt Boll came here on business, Ms. Ettling is cashing in her insurance policy to pay Interest. There was some kind of court in Public School Hall this morning, for about 1 hr. Homeringhausen & Hill had the case, quite a few people here, from down south. Dorn & someone from Lord’s Corner where having it about dogs killing turkeys, two lawyers Freidrich & Jackson from Waterloo where both here, the case was postponed until next week. Osie Neff was here & got sow & beam scale, Henry butchered a heifer, going to sell it around tomorrow. Acker fruit tree agent was here. Ed. Neff fixed our Whip, Rosalia but [sic – put] the key in & broke it of, he took the piece out again, we had 3 flat tires on there this morn.

Columbus Day. It is cloudy. No School. We went to Belleville came home cleaned house, waxed floors. Papa went to the tax meeting in the Public School, 9 men there. Hill, Rausch, Wiegand Speakers.
Monday, Aug. 28, 1933
It rained heavy last nite. Henry came up with load hogs, 8 pigs, papa went along over to E. St. Louis market, with him, the government bought today, over 80,000 there when they left, the yard. Henry had dinner here. Mr. H. M. Hill was here taking items. Mrs. Stauenfbiel was here on business, Celestine Neff came down to get here. Mr. & Mrs. Henry Meng celebrated there golden Wedding Anniv. yesterday also, two neighbors, Meng & Hill celebrated same day; Meng had eight of beer, & Hill a keg beer. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up had supper here, they sold some damson plums in town; she went to Dr. Eckerts, got something for her mouth; she brought peaches, got 2 qts.
Sunday, Aug. 27, 1933
We went out to Uncle Freds for dinner & supper. Mrs. Authur [sic – Arthur] Roscow came along from church up here, she went to see Mrs. Stauenfbiel; they came here awhile after we got home. Henry came up & got our truck to haul hogs to the market tomorrow. Miss Josie Keller & Miss Kuhn where here this evening for supper. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came to; had watermelon lunch, they left about 9:30, then the alarm ring came of Ald. Rittmeyer’s house was on fire, went over to Wagner’s, papa & George went out; everything was ablase [sic], summer kitchen & house, burned to the ground, & all that was in it, they where up at Belleville, so all they have left is what is on there backs 1 car, Smithon [sic] fire department came but no good, no water no where’s. Mr & Mrs. H. M. Hill observed there golden Wedding Anniversary today, which will be Aug. 30 Wed; all the children, grandchildren where present, lot of musci [sic] furnished.
