Mr. Kolmer was here yesterday, looking for seed corn, we had none. Miss Ethel Deuker of Washington Park, E. St. Louis, is recently recovering from an operation on appendix. Mrs. Fred Papenberg is a patient at hospital in Belleville for a day, Dr. Wagner gave her gas, to pull all the upper teeth but 6 out, every one has an abscess on, she has awful trouble with them. Miss Bessie Parker, is very ill with cold. Aunt Mary says the frost killed watermelon, pickle & few tomatoe [sic] plants, last night, everything is OK here. Lester Gregson while hauling milk one day last week, had a wreck, another car, going in the same direction, hit the back of his truck, he now has it repaired, the other car was a total wreck, all damaged, no one was hurt. We took Uncle’s ladder & things home this evening.

We all went up in woods all day. Robert Laut ordered his hog to butcher on Thurs. We went out to Floyd’s birthday, 5 yrs. old. Aunt Mary & Uncle Fred where the only ones there. Geodell’s was out night before. Henry & Leona went to East St. Louis, got xray taken of her arm.
Friday, Jan. 2, 1931
Rosalia & Bertille went to church this morn. & Papa went out to Oscar Birkner’s. This afternoon he went out in the woods. Fr. Grootens & Frank Swindle were here this evening & looked at our new pigs, they said “they are sure nice.” H.M. Hill was reporting the news to the Belleville Papers that the Hecker bank shut its doors. I seen in the Waterloo Times that Miss Helen Keckritz & a Cowell from Red Bud had a collision & Miss Keckritz machine got on fire & was completely pushed off the road & all damaged, it happened between Red Bud & Waterloo, she & a few more friends were going to the Brickey School, when the accident happened. I believe she has a new Whippet now. Emmett Cowell of Red Bud, the store manager of there was fined $102 (he had no license) for buying furs of a certain kind. Robert Basecher 19 of Red Bud & Miss Fern Gully 20 of the same place were married last week. Dr. Fentor also of Waterloo was in a collision in E. St. Louis & Mr. & Mrs. Fenton & their niece was hurt seriously. Henry Kessler of Hecker has just passed his 70th birthday anniversary & says he is going to withdraw from the Woodmen.

There are shooting matches for geese and turkeys and ducks all over again today. Mrs. Threfall has one for geese. Alfred May, Wm. Reagan & a good many others. Henry and family stayed for dinner then afterwards went home. They was supposed to come back to Pete Reheis that Frank Dudenhoeffer was coming out from St. Louis. Mr. Louis Dudenhoeffer and wife and son and wife were here a little while then they went back to Reheis too. He wasn’t in this country around here for 40 years. They was at our house about a half an hour. Hecker played their last baseball game today with Floraville for this season. Hecker won 12 to 1. Rosalia and Bertille went to church, Rosary Devotion this evening. There was a man here from E. St. Louis here and wanted to buy some eggs, so we sold him 6 doz. for .27¢ a doz. Pours got the baby christened Ethel.

Papa made a patch ready to sew turnip seed this morning. Steve Rennecker came over to him a little while. We planted some more pickle & beet seed this morning. The ground goes nice working. Papa sowed the turnip seed this evening. Henry & family were all here this evening, they brought 3 sacks of potatoes up here. Last Monday Valentine Fritche was hit by an automobile. He was going towards St. Louis with a coop of chickens & other things, & not one of his chickens were alive any more. He was thrown 20 ft. from the wagon & his horses were hurt so bad that he had to kill one of them. He is Belleville in the hospital. It happened on the Belleville road by Jake Buehler’s place. His wife wasn’t along because she is in E. St. Louis paralysis. The way we was told. I guess we will hear more about it later on.

Today is Mother’s Day. It is right nice at present. Uncle Fred, Aunt Mary & Henry were all up for church this morning. After church they all went home. So we ate early dinner and went out for a trip. We went to Waterloo then to Foster Pond as far as the hard road was finished, then turned around and went back again. Then we went to the East St. Louis Boy Scout Camp, they call it Camp Vandeventer, but we couldn’t drive in their gates was locked. Mr. Shrod told us to come back some time after June 22. Then it would be opened to drive in. So we drove back again, and then we went to the other camp they call that the Belleville camp and also Waterloo. The name of it is Camp Wangelin. There was people working there. They have a big hall and all small tents out along the woods. It sure was a dandy place to go. Then we drove back to Waterloo again & then home. We were going to stop at Henry’s but they weren’t at home. In the evening Uncle Fred and Aunt Mary came up a little early and then we played ball on the lawn. Afterwards Mamie Eichenseer came down until it was time to go to church. Then we all went up to church. After church, Mrs. Meuth, Joe, Barbara, Rosie & Mamie Meuth, came down and stayed until about 10:30. Uncle Fred and Aunt Mary were here too. Adolph Rittemeyer didn’t have his dance last nite on account of rain so he is going to have it tonight.

Leona, Bobby, Floyd were up this afternoon. Elmer Kammler was over a little while. “Billy” had been sick but he said he was better today. There was a man around deliveries some paper for the Slack Furniture Co. at E. St. Louis, Mo. Bertille took 5 dozen eggs to the store, got .22¢ a dozen. Uncle Fred and Aunt Mary were here this evening. We found 28 eggs today.
