Washed, ironed; canned peaches, tomatoes. Wittenauers plowing & cutting hay today. Mauff was here. Jac Orlet stopped took 1 bu. peaches along. pap picked 4 bus. today. Hy Bruns came brought basket back. We went to Kleins this eve; pap looked at horse & heifers they have for sale.

Thursday, Aug. 3, 1939

Nice cool day. Canned peaches, pickles. Evansville have there pinic [sic] today; nicer day then yesterday, also sales today. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came pap went along to sale by Millsdadt [sic] & Ritzel at Waterloo didn’t buy nothing. Henry Wittenauer was here, getting land ready to start plowing. J. [Josie] Keller & Mr. Neimey Jr stopped here got eggs & chicken; were also at Lizzie Bolls while. The couple that had triplets born at Belleville hospitiel [sic], only the girl is living, other 2 died, girl 5 lb. still living. August Mueth 59 formerly of Smithton was buried there this morn.

Cleaned chicken houses. Canned pickles. cut lawn, rained again this afternoon, stop threshing.

Cleaned chicken house, pap cut wheat. Went to Leo’s took hog back, & stopped at Jac Neffs longest 4 shoats $18.00. Wittenauers cutting alfalfa today.

Monday, June 26, 1939

Washed, ironed. Pap dug potatoes. We took onions out Sat. got 1 bu. Rained heavy again no oats cutting are combining today. Henry was here. Ray Braun measuring ground again today. Rain again this eve. heavy also wind with it.

Sunday, June 25, 1939

Went to mass. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped awhile. Pap went over to Emil’s awhile this afternoon, he is invited to Lesters for ice cream. Bill [Klein] & Bert [Bertille] went to Leo’s, they are cutting oats today. Sure lot of people working. Krehers & Watchels combining, some working corn; Renneckers lawning. Mrs Bruns working garden. Isn’t seem like Sun. Floraville have fish fry pinic [sic] & dance benefit of there church there. Henry came this eve. going to combine tomorrow, has been started since Sat. afternoon, & also today he said.

Saturday, June 17, 1939

Went to Orlet’s; they finished cutting last nite & shocked this morn. Bert [Bertille] baked coffee cake with dewberries, & canned 2 qts. Went to Waterloo church this afternoon. Wittenauers started cutting wheat here. Mrs. Rob. Groom (Kate Birkner) is being buried this afternoon at Belleville, she died on operation table. Sure is hot, & oats bugs terrible. Louis Cawell is giving a barn dance in the new barn tonite. Susie Gal of Hills is appearing at Log Cabin with “Sons of Ozarks.”

Went to Leo’s all day, lunch, dinner, lunch. Jake helped shock, pap drove binder. Awful hot 92. Marita came along home & stayed all nite.

Wednesday, June 7, 1939

Went to Leo’s helped plant patch corn & make hay this afternoon; had lunch & chicken dinner there. We also had first cabbage of season of ours today. Rained this afternoon, but not so much, we need it alwful [sic] bad day. Mrs. Willing Kreher came home from Belleville Hospital yesterday, after giving birth to a 3 lb. baby, which is still in hospital in incubator. Planted out tomatoes & pepper plant last for season, sprayed potatoes. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came, she went to Mrs. Staufenbiels, to see about her dress. Mrs. Agnes Kroll died of a stroke this morn; while Kate was at mass; she has been blind for good many years.

Went to Leo’s all day, had chicken dinner worked in corn & put up hay. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came up awhile to; brought her some tomato plants.
