We planted bu. potatoes, sprayed trees, cleaned chicken house, sewed spiniach [sic] & lettuce. Schmidt & Dashner got old magazines here. Mauff was here, bought doz. oranges & lemons; Pap sewed alfalfa seed. Bill [Klein] & Bert [Bertille] went to lent service at Red Bud this eve.

Went to mass. Leo & family came for dinner. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary & Bill [Klein] came this afternoon had supper, we went fishing Bill caught one Uncle ate it for supper. Emil came this eve. We had collection 2nd in church today for German Refugees; according to Bishof [sic] laws. John Wiegand, nee Kleber have a baby boy since Tues.

Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came & Bert [Bertille] went to church funeral of Mrs. Parker 49. church was crowded; mass said by Fr. Aydt, Rattermans Schumacher. Pallbearers are Oscar Birkner, Adam Eckert, Ed Schneider, Ted Eichenseer, Willie Harbaugh, Roy Staufenbiel. People here from all over. Myerscough of Ruma etc. Bert [Bertille] went to quilting again this afternoon, finished 1 quilt done. Bill [Klein] came & Bert [Bertille] went along to Red Bud lent service tonite.

Went to Leos had dinner & supper, worked on brooder house, put in a floor. Mr. Orlet was also there. Rose [Rosalia] sewed herself a dress. We set onions out by her. Bill [Klein] & Bert [Bertille] went to Red Bud to lent devotion this eve. got button for jubilee of the Bishop in Apr. 25. his 25 jubliee [sic].

Rained all night. Timber man stopped in again. John Myerscough & wife & daughter Flo, were visiting at Emils & stopped in short while to say Hello to us. Bill [Klein] & Bert [Bertille] went to Leo’s & Rose [Rosalia] to nite; roads pretty good.
Tuesday, Feb. 21, 1939
Washed, put meat & sausage away, etc. Leo & family came this eve. Marita’s eyes are better. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came for euchre in school hall given by Alter Sodality. Bill & Bert [Bertille] went to euchre, didn’t win nothing, big crowd.
Wednesday, Feb. 15, 1939
Went to Leo’s. Pap helped Leo saw logs down, had dinner & supper. Bill [Klein] came & looked at Leo’s car, has coil burned out, going to order from Kettler bring along tomorrow. Ladies Aid have euchre in hall tonite. Annie Fahey of Red Bud died, will be buried tomorrow morn. from Red Bud there had 3 priests for mass. Fr. Havey, Aydt, Spors. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came up for the euchre, nice crowd they said. Klotz’s girls were lucky, one winning quilt & blanket.
Thursday, Feb. 9, 1939
Fixed gloves this morn. Henry & Leona & Billy [Willis] came, Bert [Bertille] went along to Belleville, he took sweet clover seed along; Bill [Klein] came here awhile this morn. Raining nearly all day. Kenneth Kemp got stuck by Hill’s this afternoon. Werner Kammler pulled him out with truck. Awful bad nite, windy & raining so heavy, thunder.

Bert baked pie. Pap went to Waterloo got feed. Suppose to get cold tonite, to be zero. Pap splitting wood. Bill [Klein] came, we went to Waterloo to Pautler’s to wedding dance, Gummersheimer’s, old couple; nice crowd; good musci [sic].
Sunday, Feb. 5, 1939
Went to mass; took quite awhile had to read a letter from Bischof [sic – Bishop], & read yearly account. Leo & family came took us along to Uncle Freds, had dinner & supper. Bill [Klein] also came in afternoon, took us home. Went to Belleville to play given by St. Mary’s players; Name “Busy Honeymoon.” Steve Orlet was also in it; directed by Fr. Ratterman, & musci [sic] by St. Mary Choir & Glee Club & children was good. Steve Rennecker came here, Gus Edler was out & left money there by him for Uncle Fred. Mrs. Frank Birkner is pretty ill with flu, they don’t let no one in to see her, pretty weak. Named there baby Marlene – Maggie Schaefer & Ben Schilling were the sponsors. Beautiful day warm.
