We all went early this morning to church. The priest passed Miss Stella Roscow by this morning at the communion railing. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were here for dinner and breakfast. This afternoon we all went into Belleville. We got some cook pots. Rosalia went and got the mail. This evening Papa, Rosalia, Bertille, Uncle Fred, Aunt Mary, Henry & family went up to Uncle Adam’s & Emil’s. I have seen in the Waterloo Times that Miss Ida Sommer & two girl friends from Columbia motored to Louisville, Kentucky, where they will spend a week seeing many points of interest such as Mammoth Cave, Lincoln’s birthplace at Hodgenville, Ky., The Old Kentucky home of Bardstown & Camp Knox. They expect to return home Sat. Also Miss Marie Kolmer and Louise Dalkert left Sat. for a tour of the west. Their stops will include Denver, Colorado Springs, Estes & Yellowstone parks. They will be gone about 2 weeks. A 8 lb. baby girl was born to Mr. & Mrs. Geo. Strattman, the shoe man, at St. Mary’s Hospital, East St. Louis, Monday morning. They now have a pair. On August 9, Miss Alice Hoffman became the bride of Mr. Roy Bohres of St. Louis.

Today we have to fast from eating meat. Papa went to Evansville & Red Bud this afternoon. Aunt Mary & Uncle Fred came up this evening. Aunt Mary, Rosalia & Bertille went up to church to confession. Mamie Eichenseer came along down with us. She stayed a little while.

Today is Eunice Blackburn’s birthday. She is going to be 15 years old. It is also Hilda Staunbiel’s birthday. I believe there is a bunch going to Hilda’s first and then afterwards go to Blackburns. We have an invitation, but we aren’t going. It rained this afternoon. There were 2 nice rainbows in the East. Bertille went & got the paper this evening. She priced the chickens, heavy’s are .22 and leghorns are .18 and .15. Lard is .10¢. George Wagner has his garage finished now. There was a big crowd at Blackburn’s.

Rosalia & Bertille washed, ironed, patched, baked pie this morning. Papa went up in the woods to get a load of gravel for our road, but he got stuck in the branch & he called for Rosalia to come up with the chevrolet & bring along the ax and the chain along. Bertille made a chicken for dinner, we had soup. Today is Melissa Wiegand’s birthday. We all went there this evening. There sure was a crowd there, lemonade, cake were the refreshments. They had a cake baked with 23 candles on. It is also Mrs. Ben Heyl’s birthday. Clevelands were there until about 10 o’clock then them & Heyls came to Wiegands. Nick Mueth furnished music, but his music broke so Gus Blackburn got his. Uncle Fred brought Aunt Mary up this afternoon & he went back home again. Aunt Mary was here for supper. I have seen in the paper that Dr. Eckert was fined $5 & costs for disturbing the peace, about his father. He is to have a trial today. It looks awful cloudy.

Papa is harrowing this morning. Rosalia went up to church. Then after church, she is supposed to help clean the hall in the new school on Aunt Mary’s place, all the girls & women are supposed to help from the west side of the highway. She came home at noon. Papa went up in the woods to see if he could get some gravel & then he went to see a fellow back in the Blackjacks. After dinner Bertille went up to Angela’s to see if she & Hildegard were ready to go up to wash windows, but they wasn’t ready. Angela couldn’t go until 4 o’clock so Bertille and Hildegard went up at 3:30 & then afterwards Angela came. We finished at 6 o’clock.

Today is Smithton home-coming. It looks like rain this morning. Uncle Fred, Aunt Mary, Henry & Leona & the kids were all here for dinner today. After dinner we all went up to Smithton to see the parade. It was sure nice. We went home about 5:30. They had such a big crowd there. I guess in the evening it was worse yet. It was nice & cool today. They had a mule there that did all kinds of stunts. This evening Steve Rennecker came over a little while & talked with us and also Nicci Rausch was here a little while.

Today is sales all over again. Mrs. Hirst, Fred Schaefer and many others. Papa is spreading lime this morning. This afternoon we all went to Mrs. Hirst sale. Papa bought a harrow for $1.50. Roy Staunbiel bought a bed and we had to haul it up to Jennie Coop’s for them. This evening we took the spring wagon out to Roy’s and from there we went to Uncle Fred’s and took them along & then we went to Hy. Ronedebergs dance. Beer, cake, fruit salad were the refreshments. There is also a dance at Bill Probst’s tonight too. John Reheis have one by Burksville too.

Papa & Rosalia took a load of wheat to Red Bud this morning & got .82¢ a bu. for it. Today is Mrs. Ronenberg’s birthday. They are to have a surprise party tomorrow night. It is also Mr. & Mrs. Adam Eckerts wedding anniversary. Last Monday Mr. & Mrs. Fred Doyle got a little boy. They now have 2 boys. I seen in the paper that Mr. & Mrs. Joe Klingler have a little boy. Papa & Rosalia took another load of wheat to Red Bud this afternoon & got same price. Papa got his watch repaired, cost him $1.00. Papa brought a fish along this morning for dinner, it sure was good. It costs .30¢. It rained this evening, a little shower. Herzogs are moving Bill Herzog today & tomorrow.

We all went out to Henry’s this morning. Papa help to fan clover seed. We help Leona wash. We took 2 chickens along & had them for dinner out there. In the afternoon we went to Louis Voges’ sale, Papa bought a plow & Uncle Fred bought a wagon for $7.00. We had to pull it home for him. So we had supper out there. After supper Oscar Birkner played the radio and we listen in.

Today is a sale down by Lenzburg and Marissa. George Wagner is tearing his shed down and is going to build up a garage for his machine. John Kammler and Reuben are doing the work. Papa & Rosalia went out to Henry’s all day. They took 2 chickens along for dinner. Bertille stayed home & ironed & patched. It was pretty hot today. Dr. Eckert’s father died from old age & heat. Mr. Rennecker came over on the porch with us a little while. Jacob Erle & John Wittenaur’s machine got smashed tonight. Wittenauer’s car was standing by Eichenseer’s when Jac. Erle came along and stopped to, he bumped into and knocked it against the tree over on the sidewalk & then back in the alley. Erle had a scratch on the chin. His car was pulled to Red Bud on a wrecking car. Wittenaur’s is standing in Eichenseer’s back yard.
