Pap went to Hecker. Vic Eichenseer came & fixed our pump at the straw shed. the E. W. A. roadworkers started again today, only work 15 hrs. week. Seven were fired, & 4 new ones put on, they are Chas. Helfrich, Hy. Brown, Philip Jatho, Osie Neff put on, & those fired, where Robert Laut, Hecker & 2 guys from Waterloo. Meyer’s, Hy. Emery, Bill Sensel. Rosalia went after the mail. Pierre Laut was here yesterday evening, said we could come & help quilt this afternoon; Rosalia went; Mrs. Rennecker, Mrs. George Kammler were the quilters for today. It is sun burst quilt they had lunch. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up awhile this afternoon. We had cooked cheese from Mertz store, lb. Adam Eckert’s butter; all was good. This evening we went out to Uncle Freds, Aunt Mary’s 57 birthday, cake & orangeade was served to the following: Mrs. Oscar Birkners family, Frank Birkner’s family, Christ Buehler’s family, Wm. Birkner’s family, Miss Josie Keller, Pinochle & lotto was played by the kids, got prizes; Frieda got attendance prize again. Miss Josie spent the day by Lizzie Boll’s.

Took Chas. Helfrich’s along to church. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary & Josie where here for dinner & supper, & midnight lunch. Levi Gregson came & paid for his hogs, 239 lbs. & 236 lbs. @ $3.65. Henry & family where up this afternoon, had supper, played some cards all day & nite till 12′ o clock. Mr. Ed Meng was here to see Uncle Fred. They say Fr. Aydt read of the report this morn, $11,000 debts. The Young people of Red Bud are going to have Bible class, every first Thurs. evening of the mo. It rained a little. Mr. Clarence Mohears & girl of Renault, are getting married wedding dance at Oak Grove.

Levi Gregson got 2 hogs this morn. Emil & Bert Tompson helped. We washed with the machine today. Mr. Joe Watchel came & paid for his hog, 195 lbs. @ $3.50. $6.85. Papa paid the Chev. Insurance, & ordered license $21.00 this year. Henry came up & him & papa went to Chas. Helfrichs to look at a hog. It sure is some beautiful days; warm. We fried in sausage, & bacon; cold packed, 4 qts. ham; canned 1 qt. beef for soup.

Osie Neff is here butchering a heifer for us; for 75¢. George Schilling was here to see Osie; A quarter of beef weighs 80 lbs. & 83 lbs; Robert Laut & Chas Helfrich’s got each a quarter. Mr. Ed Meng got some beef; here. Levi Gregson came up to see about some hogs. Milton Wagner got beef here. Mrs. Wm. Gregson & Mrs. Rennecker was here, Mrs. Gregson got a piece for soup meat.

We went to Red Bud, took Helfrichs along. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here for dinner, played pinochle, left about 2:30 went to see Wilfred Eichenseer, they was to bring him home about 2 o’clock. There was a bunch going to chivari Ed Neff last night, but on account of this accident they didn’t. We all went to Eichenseer’s this evening, stayed till 8:30, after the rosary was said; there were quite a few came in & out; some stayed. Angela [the deceased’s sister] takes it awful hard; not so bad on the rest of the family.

It rained yesterday, the road relief workers weren’t out, but went again today. Cyril Eichenseer came & got the recipe how to sugar cane meat. Bertil [sic] went to Liz Boll’s got the bread. Bruno Winkler’s father died Dec. 30, aged 83 yrs. Miss Slyveria Helfrich celebrated her 17th birthday anniversary Sun. evening & Harold Birkner his 6th & Elmer Quirin his 23rd; & also Maben Pickett.

Papa went to see Pete Watchel’s. Harold Wagner was here wanted to sell & take orders for seeds. Ed. Neff 26 & Bertha Helfrich 20 were married at Paderborn Hecker, this morning at 7 o clock mass. Mr. Vogt, Kroll’s son in law will move to Hecker, & is going to start, hauling milk for Peveley Diary [sic], he will come & take the milk right from the house; he told Henry, but Henry had sent to Waterloo, & now he can’t sent none at all till 30 days; he was supposed to give St. Louis Dairy 30 days notice & didn’t do it. Mr. Henry Acker of Lords Corner died this afternoon at 1’o clock will be buried Sun. afternoon, there. Louis Dehn butched [sic] by Renneckers.

We went to Red Bud, took Mrs. Chas Helfrich & kids along & brought them & Jonny Roscow back. Mrs. Josephine Kelley wife of Wm. Kelley died Thurs. evening & was buried this afternoon at Ruma, we went down to the funeral, Fr. Whitte had charge of it, no sermon, & never opened the coffin, just blessing, & buried in Ruma Cemetery, seen quite a few people that we knew, Meyerscouh’s & Tiptown people. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary couldn’t get out, the roads are to bad; It sure did turn warm yesterday & today, the snow is all gone. Tonite the New Year shooters will have to be out.

Mr. Hill was here to get news. It sure is cold this morn. Ignatz Neff on his way to 5 o clock mass yesterday morn, ran over a fox by Levi Gregsons & killed it, took it along home with him. Nic Helfrichs has coon lunch, the other nite & beer, a few from town was there, & what a time! Mr. Ed Neff & Bertha Helfrich were published first time last Sunday.

Went to Red Bud took Helfrich’s kids along. It sure did turn cold, this morning. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came this afternoon, played pinochle, they had supper here, this evening Brand family came & Santa, Christmas Eve, played cards, etc.
