Confirmation in Hecker today. Bischop [sic] comes, Fr.’s Harbaugh says mass with Havey & Schumacher, sub deacons; 40 children. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up, Rosalia & Berti went along up to church, Mrs. Kroll was convert. Henry & Floyd was here for dinner, Leona brought Emil up, made hay this afternoon, all had lunch. didn’t get finished, hauled 2 loads in & took 2 home, so far.

Schiders putting up hay. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where up, she helped clean dishes & things at the school house for pinic [sic] next Sat. In Ruma there is a big pinic today, mass was said out in the woods; lot of cars & priest went down this morning. There was a man here from Kansas trying to sell dry goods, shirts 19¢, etc, he brought some of his dress goods in & showed it to us, $1.95 for 3½ yds, we didn’t buy none, & papa & Uncle Fred wanted to buy sheets, he was so mad, said he had no more time to talk had to hurry & get out so they never got no shirts either; Boy! was he mad. I say he was. Canned 2 qts tomatoes, we have 111 qts now. It rained a little.

Papa took Rosalia as far as the hills & Henry met her there. Canned 2 qts greengages. Papa & Rob culling manure. Mr. Leo Wittenauer & Miss Katherine Daley of St. Louis where married there last Wed. Aug. 2. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up, she brought some more greengages, so now we have 13 qts; they where here for lunch. Papa went down to Geo. Lorberg’s sale with Osie Neff; he sold dairy cows, 3 of them, higest [sic] $55 the rest where bought back, & Bruns bought engine, Hinkel crusher & belt; it was a very large crowd, papa said. Mr. Ed Schinder was here, started cutting the hay for second time. Aunt Mary helped to cut Roberts shirt out, & sewed it.

Scheider put up hay, George Wagner & Hecke, helped the kids. A man was here selling a paper Extension Service 25¢ mo. for the students of priesthood & chapels, where they have no churches; another was here selling Lords Prayer & Verse. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came here then went threshing by Ronnerberg; Rosalia got another 100 lbs. flour, twin roses from Eichenseer, $2.75. Chas. Jung got 8 doz. eggs 11¢. We took the mule out to Uncle Fred’s this evening. Papa & George Wagner alterered [sic – altered] our little piggies this evening.

We washed, ironed, took our onions out, it nice this morning, cool. 7 pigs born tonite. Scheinder kids cut hay, rake & piled it here today, papa helped them; eggs 10¢. flour is going up.

Rosalia & Bertille went out to Henrys washed 2 weeks wash, quilts, worked garden had lunch, dinner, lunch. Laurent from Prairie Du Rocher, & papa came out to look at Henry’s cow he had to trade, didn’t make no trade though, then they went to Uncle Freds, made no trade there either, Henry bought a sheep from him yesterday for .50¢ & old one. Ed Scheinder cut our hay around here, & is going to make it on shares. There was a guy here from below Red Bud, wanted to buy horses. Mr. Philip Wuertz & Ted where here got some more hay. Mrs. Rennecker is 61 yrs. old today. Wagner & Lauts went.

We washed and iron & baked bread today. Papa & Rosalia got a load of oats at Henry’s this afternoon. Cyril & Clarence came down this eve, & got each a bu. oats & sack of hay for 300 for there rabbits. Aunt Mary called up this evening, she was quilting at Henry Birkners today. Ed. Meng was over & paid Uncle Freds int. Mr. & Mrs. Edwin Reheis has a little boy since Dec. 27, they have now a girl & boy. Mrs. Joe Mueth nee Brocs died at 5 o clock this eve. Papa went to town. Miss Martha Boll of St. Louis called out to Geo. Boll’s & congraulated [sic] him on his birthday. Joe Watchel is butchering.

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came this afternoon, he & Henry Meng helped papa make hay. They where here for lunch, supper. There was an airplane came from the north & flew around Hecker, made 4 circles, then went backa gain, haven’t heard who it was yet. Seen in the paper Matt Crowe, insurance agent while trying to crank the car broke his arm. Mrs. Benedict of Red Bud also broke her left arm, she broke the right one not long ago, she fell again.

Decoration Day. Church Pinic [sic] in Alten [sic – Alton] & here in Hecker, & school pinic [sic] at Waterloo. Hy. Armstutuz was here this morn. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here helping to make hay, they & Hy. Meng had dinner, he helped too. This afternoon Uncle Fred took Aunt Mary up to the pinic [sic], & her stuff but no chickens, then he came back & helped finish with the hay, they had lunch here, Uncle Fred ate supper with us, then went down to Red Bud to drug store. There where so many people at the pinic [sic], they didn’t have enough chicken, 30 people went down, didn’t eat no supper, had to wait to long till the chicken was all fryed [sic]. This evening we all went out Henry Birkner’s, Mary’s birthday, had a dance out there. Lip. Meuth & 3 other fellows where here & they looked at the colts, drunk as could be, they where out all nite at a dance at Fahey’s. eggs 7¢ today.

Henry was here & got the rest of his hay & hog. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up this afternoon to keep house in Hecker for a few days. This evening she went along with us to Red Bud to confession & service. We went to see Mrs. McQullian in the hospital but she had already retired, so we couldn’t get to see her, she was feeling bad.
