Uncle Fred’s 64 & Uncle Joe’s birthday. Rained last nite. Pap took load wheat to Waterloo got 81 [cents]. The Kunkel place was sold on Public Auction at Court House this morn. at 10 o clock by Morrison. Uncle Pete Reheis got it $1500. rather had to take it, he had the mortgage. Bill [Klein] came took Bert [Bertille] & pap along out to Henrys this eve.

Saturday, April 2, 1938

Cold with frost. 34 this morn. Bert [Bertille] made fire in furnace again. Horn’s household goods to be sold at public auction this afternoon the house & lots were sold to Ted Eichenseer $400. last week. Mrs. Hy. Rehling of Waterloo has sale also this afternoon & Ross in Smithton to. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came Bert went along to Smithton to sale but it was nothing, mostly implements etc; then we went to Rehling’s by 2 1/2 mile west of Foster Pond; A. [Aunt] Mary bought box shallot onions for 5 [cents], had so much things to sell. Bert [Bertille] took 10 doz. eggs to town, got 14 [cents]. Mrs. Joe Griffin passed away this afternoon, she has just been home from the hospital about week, but was feeling well; died suddenly this afternoon. It is to be pretty cold tonite, with a killing frost; lowest to be 30.

The soap got nice. Bert finished cleaning upstairs, all but washing curtains yet. Pap took dinner along went out in woods with wagon. Sewed some more lettuce, radish & tomatoe [sic] seed, the garden is rather wet. Some guys here from Valmeyer looking for old iron. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, he bought ½ bu. timothy seed 10¢ lb. Mertz has a new electric refrigator [sic] in store, its a dandy. Wheat $1.40. Mrs. Caroline Deueker sold some ground to Geo. Erle seen in paper. also Dr. Pautler bought Kropp land & Chas. Lenhardt place that was sold public auction last Sat. brought $4,986 – 100 acres by Geo. Biffar. Leo & Rose & Mr. Orlet came this evening, also Henry & family. Mertz gave Leo a dripolator for wedding present, its nice; 8 cup size.

Sunday, Oct. 18, 1936

Mission Sun. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were here awhile. Omer brought 2 fish here this afternoon & boy we had fish fry, sure were good, couldn’t eat it all. People from South of Red Bud looked at the heifers. E. Rieso & W. Mueth have birthday dance at Pautlers. The Hecker bank was sold at Public Auction in Waterloo, Court House last Sat. Yesterday Ed. Weber bought the building $500. Articles that was in it & safe Burkhardt of Red Bud got for $35.00 & 80 acres farm. Wolf real estate agent got $1300 & 40 acres Weber $800.

We fixed Aunt Marys pillow cases for the pinic [sic]. Henry & family came up, & the kids stayed here & Bertille went along to Belleville with them, & got a few articles. Ben Rausch’s farm was advertised for public auction last Sat. but no bid was made on it, so it wasn’t sold. The Schoenborn farm of 117 acres near Paderborn was sold last Sat. Mar 4, at public auction. John Schoenborn purchase the farm for $4000.00. Ed Neff build a piece to his blacksmith shop. Henry Kern recently moved from Mrs. Philip Brauns property, to Smithon [sic], Mr. Walter Hecke & family moved into Braun’s property. Henry Schenider’s daughter of Waterloo was confined to their home for having case of diptheria, & Walter Jauger having chicken pox. It is awful cold out tonite.
