A man from Belleville was here & looked at the colt. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came & we went to Evansville to the 75 yr. Diamond Jubilee pinic [sic], had supper there, stayed for the evening, raffled out some very beautiful quilts on the bingo stand; some nice prizes. We also went to see Volkmann’s, papa looked at the horses. In the evening they had a large crowd at the pinic [sic], Evansville band played; we didn’t stop till the diamond ring was given away, supper was served cafeteria style, plate supper, 35¢. they charged.

Ironed, patched this morning. Papa went to Red Bud, got 100 lbs. growena, from Zipfel. We went out to Henrys this afternoon cleaned hall & papered kitchen. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up, & we all went to the Catholics euchre, & what a crowd, not many prizes, $1.00 attendance prize was won by Clyde Pautler, of Evansville, 11 points was the highest, Max Welabacher took 1st prize, get 25 chip from Ed Parker, Bertie had 3 got bottle white shoe cleaner, Uncle got stationary, rest got nothing.

Went out to Henry’s, pap plastered the walls, we helped wash, took ours along to, cooked soap, ironed, baked etc.; last day of school. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were up working. Mrs. Donahue, & Mrs. Kirsh both old ladies of Red Bud died, close neighbors. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up & Rose & Bertie went to the euchre in Kammlers Hall, Adm. 25¢, was given by the Lords Corner Church not much of a crowd. Bertie had 11 point won prize, coffee percolator, Rose got soup dish; very beautiful. We washed our hair & they got very pretty. Henry Volkemann is very sick, cold.

Cooked 2 kettles soap, put up wire fence. We planted potatoes, finished now; pap got Meng’s plow to make the rows. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, went along with us to Red Bud to the card party, Berti had 9 points got cake pans. Uncle Fred, a little dress & Aunt Mary 25¢ sugar; the rest got nothing, not so much of a crowd. The hooked rug was won by Mrs. Leo Schumacher of Evansville, pillow slips by Mrs. Ratz, & Schuelte got attendance prize, a lace tablecloth, very pretty. Aunt Mary said Mr. Bill Sensel, Pete’s brother died at Waterloo will be buried there Thurs. afternoon, she was talking to him yet last Sat. there, he was O.K. then.

Making a star quilt out of scraps; Mrs. Phillip Kahmer of Fords Corner is getting buried this afternoon. Pretty cold weather again. Leona said she planted out cabbage plants yesterday & not very nice today for them; We got out sweet potatoes in the hot bed. Miss Lizzie Boll was the lucky one to win the quilt that was raffled at the euchre Tues. night. Joe Griffin got attendance prize. Casper Horshmann living on Barney Kaiser’s farm is awful bad sick at present; We received a letter from Alice, says raining there, flower are blooming, everything looks so nice; we sent her a letter today. Eggs 18¢, we shipped 19 hens, 123 lbs. over to St. Louis with Mertz & got 16½¢ lb; they lost 1 lb. going over, some weighed 7½-9 lbs; surely were & nice fat. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came , we all went to McDermotts, to see Margaret, she sure was laid out nice, pink dress, had so many beautiful flowers & so many cards for masses to be read for her; quite a few people came to the house, it was packed. Mrs. McDermott isn’t so good. Gertie Irose is getting along fine, since she was operated. Margaret – she was so weak of blood, they even took Ruth’s blood, but it didn’t help, they checked, Hubert also, both listed good.

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, she had dinner & supper here; Rose & Aunt Mary went to Fire Co. quilting in the city hall, this afternoon. Mr. Khong, straw baler man, was here. We went to the Evangical [sic] euchre tonite, Kammlers Hall, didn’t win a prize, had 6 points; the quilt & pillow cases & towel were given away by playing 3 games lotto for 10¢. Alscas Eckert won 1st quilt, Mrs. Ed. Koerber 2nd, slips. Valmeyer lady 3rd; towel. Miss. Irene Kayson won attendance prize, writing paper; big crowd.

Jo Kellers birthday. Cloudy & raining. Mr. Ed Rickers farm census taker was here this afternoon; Mamie Eichenseer, came to have her hair curled, euchre tonite. Rose & Bertie went to the euchre of the B.V.M. Sodality of Hecker parish. Bertie had 8 points, got dresser scarf. Miss Viola Purtle of Red Bud won the pillow slip attendance prize; large crowd, tables filled. Miss Doris Breautigam, of Belleville & Traveberger where married at Carlye on Jan 30, kept secret; daughter of one [? – unclear] Clara Birkner.

Fried in bacon. Henry & Leona went to Belleville, Billy [Willis] stayed here. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came this afternoon. We went to Donahue’s to Tipton Parish euchre party, played 10 games, we didn’t receive prizes, had 5 points; not much of a crowd, & no prizes; a quilt was raffled out & was won by Ruth May. Mr. Bill Kelley of Ruma, died will be buried tomorrow morning.

Ironed this morning. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were here awhile, he went to Red Bud, with wheat, 92¢. We went out to Henry’s this afternoon, went with his car to E. St. Louis, to Bond Ave. Floyd went along to & Henry drove. We all went to Red Bud, to the pillow slip euchre, but didn’t win any, I had 9 points, still didn’t win, 51 prizes; pillow slips, attendance prize was won by Mr. Ratz. Dr. Paulter son Paul won pillow slips, that were raffled out; the crowd wasn’t so large. There is a euchre in Hecker, also Catholics.
Saturday, Nov. 10, 1934
Papa & Rosalia went out, got a load wheat & got it crushed. Henry & family went to Waterloo sell the rest of the beef. Our hogs were out, George Wagner told us about it. A guy around selling household articles, we didn’t buy anything; we canned 2 qts beef, made soup rest for roast, awful warm today again. Lena Meng was over wanted some beef for tomorrow, but we had none here either. Dances everywhere again tonite, at Brezzy Hill a electric radio is given as attendance prize, Moonlighters playing. Adm. 25¢. Herb. Bertram was the lucky one. Hunting season opens today.
