Tuesday, Oct. 11, 1938

Warm again today. We picked potatoes through, cleaned out chicken houses. Leo & family were here this eve. Bill & Bert [Bertille] went to St. Louis to see Veiled Prophet parade & visited by Josie Keller awhile, had supper by her. There were 20 floats, & were they beautiful “Song we Sing.”

Thursday, Oct. 6, 1938

Bert [Bertille] cleaned bedroom & hall. Pap dug sweet potatoes & cleaned patch, have about 1 bu. little bitter. Today Jack Ganley & girl from St. Louis, Holemeyer, they are living in Colorado, getting married, having wedding dance at Donahue’s; tonite. Days sure are getting short. Leo & family came this eve. Marita is getting big & fat. reaches now has 2 little teeth & some more coming, teeth at 5 mon. old.

Sunday, Oct. 2, 1938

Went to mass. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary & Leo & family all had dinner here. Went to Paderborn to Totsch’s, wustmarket & free dance & crowd musci [sic] by girls. Joe Freund & Vivian Grahleherr were published last time today, & Jack Ganley & girl from St. Louis for 1 – 2 – 3 time. Fr. Aydt was pretty sore made sermon.

Saturday, October 1, 1938

Pap got crushing done went to Stahls got Whip fixed. This afternoon went out on business trip in black jacks. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped in went to see Buehler’s farm they are papering 4 rooms in house; now. Eggs .25 [cents]. Mr & Mrs. William Birkner had a request to German Band for the birthday of Mike Armstutz; & last nite for Ed Krehoer girl, & Susie had yesterday for Mr & Mrs Aaron Papenberg Ann. by Elmer Rittmeyer & family of St. Louis, & for birthday of Edna Haudrich by Irene Buehler; Leo & family went out to Henry’s.

Sunday, Sept. 25, 1938

Went to mass. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stayed awhile. Leo & family & Bill came, we all went to Firemen’s pinic [sic] at Manniers Park, nice crowd in eve; we all had supper there plate supper, mashed potatoes & sauerkraut, sausage, cake, applesauce, catsup & pickle. 35 [cents] plate. German band played in afternoon. Stern Brau beer. Girls played for dance in eve; nice crowd. Willie Doyle was here.

Friday, Sept. 23, 1938

Bert finished cleaning upstairs. Baked cake etc. Pap took lime dust spreader home out to Henrys with team & wagon, was going to help him spread but he wasn’t ready to start yet. Transfers in Waterloo paper Homringhausen Bro. to Chr. [unclear] Buehler. Going to be a free wedding dance at Log Cabin & one at MidWay Inn tomorrow nite; don’t know who is getting married. Went to Leo’s this eve. cut lawn etc. Leo took his dad home.

Tuesday, Sept. 20, 1938

Had no frost. We took 2 hogs & went to Leo’s, loaded his calf went to Belleville to Streck’s pap stayed there with baby [Marita]; he got 11 [cents] for calf 157 lb. & we got for 175 lb. $8.60 & 230 lb. $8.75 that’s yesterdays price, today markets when down again. The Young Ladies have card party in school hall tonite; open air if it isn’t to cold. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came here awhile they & Bill & Bert [Bertille] went to euchre in hall, got nothing A. [Aunt] Mary got last price package napkins. 8 points. Leo & family & pap went to Red Bud to wake at Koch’s of Mrs. Isabel Gallagher. Emil came brought a letter with Nic. Brands name on it, it came from Mrs. Ryan of Oxley Mo.; wanting information about Turstenberg family, which she is a relative; to write. The sheriff of Waterloo & Belleville was out in Hecker gathering a few boys that damaged Vera’s property Sun. nite; Clyde Mueth, Clarence Braun, Bill Braun, few others yet, did about $150.00.

Monday, Sept. 19, 1938

Bert [Bertille] washed ironed. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up all day, he worked across street, had beef soup dinner they brought here, had dinner & supper. Celestine Neff was here selling chances on bedspread, donations to go for recovering aisle for centennial mass, which will be in Nov. 11. Pap went to meeting at Kammler’s hall; about the farm plans again. Mrs. Bill Gallagher died this morn. is at Kochs parlor, she was ill for about week; will be buried Wed. morn at Red Bud. Leo & family & Henry & family were here this eve. Radio say frost tonite..

Wednesday, Sept. 14, 1938

Nice cool morning, after all the rain yesterday. Bert [Bertille] ironed, patched; pap. plowed orchard & harrowed it. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up this afternoon working across street. Hall’s big animal circus , coming to town tomorrow nite only. Adm. 20 & 10. and elphant [sic] weighing 5000 lbs. big girl jumbo. Henry & family & Leo & family. It is awful cool this eve; with light rain.

Sunday, Sept. 11, 1938

Went to mass. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were here all morn. went home. Emil was here awhile too; he is invited out to Cleveland’s celebrating Grovers 21 yr. birthday, which is tomorrow. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came brought lawn mower back, fixed it up. from here they went to Leo’s. Mary Braun & Doris Peiffer having birthday dance at Daabs tonite Schmidts playing. Adm. 25 [cents].
