Papa pumped the water out of Uncle Fred’s cellar this morning. Mr. Rennecker & Hy Armstutz are butchering 1 hog at Mrs. Arns today. Bertille got the papers. Mr Wm. Laut & Mr. John Hepp are awful bad sick no hopes for recovery. Mr. Laut got a light stroke again. Mr. Hepp here in town has kidney trouble. There is a big free dance tonite at the Odd Fellow Hall at Waterloo. Seen in the paper that Wm. Sensel’s mother, Mrs. Mary Sensel was buried last Sun. afternoon at Waterloo 74 yrs. old; her husband preceded her in death about 2 yrs. ago. Dr. Sennot died, most probably be buried this afternoon, being ill for several months, in former years, he practice as his doctor in Hecker for several yrs. According to Bill Kleyer’s onion, this is supposed to be a very dry year. Sheriff Al Gaven took Wm. Zimmer Jr. to the Vandalia Penal Farm last Friday. Alf. Mueller who was clerk at Connor’s Store is now employed at Gauen’s Store since the first & Joe Johnson is now employed at Connor’s.

It started sleeting, it was awful bad driving the windshield always froze up & we couldn’t see, had to clean it of [sic – off] 5 times coming home from Red Bud. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here for dinner we had chicken, we played 5 hand pinochle about 3 games then they went home. Dan Geodelle & his family called in this morn, looking for Henry, he wasn’t home they where at Waterloo, she called in so they are going to visit them tonite. Dan wanted to speak with Henry about pigs. Art Schaefer & a gang, Papenberg, Parker’s, went down the road with the sleigh & bells ringing this afternoon for a ride, they sure went some. We went to Robert Laut’s this evening. Joe Watchel’s family & Mr. & Mrs. Karl Boll where also there, the ladies plaed 5 hand pinochle & the men played solo. popcorn & wine where served, came home about 11 o’clock.

It snowed last night, everything is white, & cold. George Wagner’s family & Mrs. Rennecker went to Belleville this afternoon. Geo. Boll went around selling meat & beef today. The Farm Bureau are giving a dance in the Odd Fellows hall tonite, members are free & other’s 25¢. Robert Laut’s family are visiting Rennecker’s this evening.

We washed, ironed. There was a man around selling $1.00 bottle pure vanilla for 50¢, we didn’t take none. Mr. Hill was here with papers to sign for the right of way past our place out there; papa didn’t sign yet because he didn’t understand everything what it says on there. Mrs. Robert Laut is out at George Boll’s, helping with the work. We are only finding 6 eggs.

We went to Red Bud church at 6’o clock mass. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here for dinner. Henry came up this afternoon & him & Rosalia went around town selling beef, he sold to a good many here. We took 10½ lbs, he sold it at 10 & 12¢ lb. He killed it this morn, Osie Neff did it; tomorrow morning, he is going to take the rest to Waterloo. Mrs. Robert Laut & Marcella Boll went over to Uncle Fred’s place this afternoon but they where over here, they didn’t come over. Mamie & Clarence came down tonite, he brought his needle work along down; we played euchre, & ate popcorn.

Mr. & Mrs. Edwin Spalt of Pine Lawn have a little baby girl born Aug. 31. Papa went down to Hy. Armstutz, to haul out crushed corn. Henry was up & got 4 barrels of whey. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up & then went to Robert Lauts, Victoria Schaefer is there; she called out there to them & told them to come. Herman Pinkel of Waterloo died & was buried today.

We finished digging our potatoes this morn, 6 rows. Bertille went up town this evening & got the mail. Frank Schwinde is having a birthday party in the school hall tonite. Mrs. Martin Fritsche got the job of cleaning the Hecker School for $3.90. Reagean’s had a bid in for $4.00 & Lauts $6.00.

We washed, ironed. Papa is plowing the chicken yard. Uncle Fred Aunt Mary came up this afternoon. She went up to Laut’s, Mrs. invited her to come to Kammler’s Hall this evening. Phil Zatho celebrating his 60 yr. old birthday, so we went to the hall this eve, not a very big crowd there, Blackburn furnished musci [sic], cake & beer where served.

We went to Red Bud. We had chicken dinner by Uncle Fred’s today. Ronenbergs brought them one. Today is fish fry & dance at the Rod & Gun Club. Uncle Adam & Emil came up to see Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary, then, Joe & Josie Gregson came but they wanted to come & see us, but being we where over there, they stayed there to, we all had supper. This evening we ate Watermellon [sic]. Seen in the paper that Ed Birke has a baby boy, they have 2 a girl & boy, & also Slyvester [sic – Sylvester] Doyle have a boy, first born. Elmer Kammler’s called there Donald Robert. Mr. & Mrs. Robert Laut sponsors.

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stayed in Hecker all nite & went home this afternoon. They said there was such a crowd at Braun’s, they danced in the barn & about 10 o clock they laid a floor down outside, so many people, the fish got all, people from all over where there. Robert Laut & family came to see us this evening, also Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary, she bought a watermellon [sic] from Geo. Lorberg for 5¢, 8½ lbs. an a good one.
