Windy, not as hot. Bert [Bertille] sewed lettuce etc. Baked cream pie. Euchre & card party at Paderborn tonite; Bert [Bertille] went got dish, playing bluey had 2 games; Hy Kettler played for dance, not very much, no crowd. Elmer Parker, & Vincent Klein, have a birthday dance at Kammler’s tonight; Jake Schoenborn played Adm. 25 [cents] pretty good crowd. Rained a little this eve. Awful dust storm this afternoon. Mr. & Mrs. Perry May were here this eve; till 11:30. The Wedding that was here at Hecker, by Fr. Aydt last Tues morn, was Walter Kunkel & Brauch girl. Joe daughter, both of Tipton, never were published, are anything, May said that. Harry Wittenauer was here this afternoon; on business.

Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt Mary] & Bert [Bertille] went to Mrs. Griffins funeral she was 31 yrs. old. pallbearers were Noel Roscow, Gus Frisch, Wm. Harbaugh; 3 fellows from her side, from Freeburg. Had a Solemn Requeim [sic] Mass; by Aydt, Orlet, & Shoemaker, who gave her the Catholic Instructions. Fr. Aydt had a very nice sermon, church was crowded, buried her at Waterloo cemetery were the twins are also buried; 2 girls. Henry came brought the truck & got his car; got $9.25 for his calf. Steve Stiffler came this eve.

Friday, March 18, 1938

Today it is 13 yrs. of Myursboro [sic – Murphysboro] cyclone. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came pap went along into Waterloo to Mrs. Rose Kanstein’s funeral, her husband divorced was here too. Bert [Bertille] went up to church, we didn’t go to cemetery. Fr. Aydt made nice sermon, but he had to rush it a little cause he wanted to go to Belleville St. Mary Parish, his good friend Roesch was being buried, from tornado. Fr. Joe had 2 funerals this morn. 1 at 8:45 & Roesch Solmen [sic] High mass at 10:45, he was owner of Roesch Enamel plant, which was also destroyed. The pallbearers for Rose were Hy & Emil, Ben Schilling, Levi & Willie Ganley, Simon Havey; large funeral, 1 from Frank Dudenhoefers boys was here from Okla. [Oklahoma]. Mehrmann got 12 doz. eggs. 15 [cents]. Chas Helfrich got 5 bu. potatoes this afternoon. Ralph Wiegand came last nite got his what Leo brought here for hime $1. bu. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came here & Bert [Bertille] went to lent devotion. There is Literary at School House tonite, movie by Dr. Wagner, signing N. Reheis. Bert’s [Bertille] gray suit 16. came today from New York; fits fine, looks good.

Sunday, Dec. 19, 1937

Went to Red Bud. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came down, had dinner here, we played cards. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped awhile; this morn. We went to Paderborn, closing of Mission church was crowded. Fr. Aydt, Spors priests present. Fr. Teonnies is very ill; Missionary was pretty nice & made good sermons.

Tuesday, June 29, 1937

Worked in garden; went up seen Fr. Aydt; masses said for Uncle Adam; Uncle Fred is working up here again this morn. Rained a little this afternoon. Edwin Reheis looked at the hay. To see if it would be dry enough by tomorrow. Went out to Uncle Adams; so many people there, in & out. Ed came this afternoon by train; Carrie is coming in about 10 days; were he works they send a big bouquet flowers; & children bought 1, has quite few mass cards. Josie Keller & Ella Miller were also out; Mr. & Mrs. Jac Schmidt.

Monday, April 5, 1937

Raining all day again. Leo Hermann of Columbia was here looked at mule. Man around we ordered Extension Magazine again $3. & took rosary as a premium. We went to Paderborn confirmation, 21 got confirmed, priests present were Fr. Aydt, Janson, Greuenwald, Waterloo assistant, Bishcoff & Toenniers. Bert stood as sponsor for Thresa [sic] Cortner. Eggs 20¢ at present. Mrs. Wilmer Kaiser won $1 at New Athens, why does a hen lay eggs, because, A hen lays eggs to reproduce more of her own kind. It was provided thus by nature as a means of reproduction, we got the letter from Geiger’s today, on the winners of all the quilts etc.

Thursday, May 21, 1936

Ascenscion [sic] “Holiday” Went to Red Bud to 6’oclock mass. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came went along to Belleville with us; we got new dresses; pap went to Dr Frein’s office, should come back again next week. Beautiful day. There were a lot of people from Hecker & Paderborn at Belleville today. Fr. Aydt & Dramatic Players, & Mr. & Mrs. Joe Griffin & Pearl, 15 in all went on an outing to Fort Gage & Chester, he furnished dinner eats & drinks beer.
