Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1937

Heavy fog today. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary went home after breakfast this morn. Emil came over to pay the rent to them before they left. We went to mass at Paderborn, of Fr. Teoonine [sic – Toennies], church was filled; & so many priests, all had lunch in hall and at 12:15 was going to leave, burial at Germantown; had honorable & pallbearers. Uncle Fred left there car set at Neff’s lane & walked home the rest of way. Rob & Alice Laut came this eve. we played 7 games pinochle. Pierre was by Osie Neff’s, Myrtle birthday celebration; played games etc. Walter Wittnauer was here with his books again on land.

Monday, Dec. 27, 1937

Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary had breakfast & supper here going to stay over nite again, awful warm out. Went out to Henry’s butchering, had dinner. Boys got piona [sic – piano] accordion from Santa Claus for Christmas. Lena Meng was here to see Uncle Fred. Uncle Fred fixed the pump for Emil, after we came home from butchering. Frank Emery died this morn. 2 oclock is by Wagners. We played cards this eve. pinochle. Lena Meng stopped in on way town.

Monday, Dec. 20, 1937

Went out to Henry’s butchering; Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came here for supper here, he had been at Waterloo, we all went over to Emil’s, visiting, till 9:30. Beautiful day.

Sunday, Dec. 12, 1937

Went to mass. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary had dinner here played cards. 4 games. Emil’s birthday. Gregsons were all by him. Tonite is Solemn closing of Mission, & the begining [sic] at Paderborn. Uncle Fred & A. Mary came, went along with us to closing of Mission, but boy! what a nite, raining & slick, coming home going down Round Prairie Hill, our car turned around 2 times around boy it sure was awful, but turned out alright, they didn’t have the cinders put on there yet; but were just at it.

Thursday, Dec. 9, 1937

10 above this morn. We went to mass. & sermon. Washed, made carmel [sic] cookies; cracked nuts etc. Levi Gregson came to get our key to Emil’s, he wasn’t at home but came later. Levi couldn’t get the car started, got some hot water home. Mrs. Geo. Parker’s birthday today. We went to Mission Devotion.

Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1937

Went to Red Bud high mass & sermon; Baked cookies & cake. Pap went along with Emil to Red Bud to Louis Gregson’s funeral this morn. There was a fellow dropped dead at the Gregson house, fell over & was dead. Mrs. Gregson’s sister child, a man of about 200 lbs. they said. We run out of gas by Levi Gregson this morn. coming home from church, he had a 5 gal. can at his place. Went to Mission Devotion & sermon; had questions & answers.

Monday, Dec. 6, 1937

Went to Red Bud, high mass & sermon, for hr. Went to Henry’s butchering, 1 hog. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary helped also, 8 degrees above zero this morn; pretty cold. Emil was over this morn. Mrs. Connor was here on business; wants to trade or sell colt.

Saturday, Dec. 4, 1937

Getting colder, windy. Our Chicago Mail Ord. came everything O.K. Pap got crushing done. Emil is done by Joe Gregson’s. Josie is sick; Emil lost his shed key. Henry came, wants to butcher Mon. if weather is favorable. The Tipton priest brought Walter Kelley over, on business for Uncle Fred. Sure getting colder, freezing right along, to be 25 [degrees].

Wednesday, December 1, 1937

Bert [Bertille] went to funeral of Mr. Grahlerr to church, wasn’t so large. Pallbearers were Geo. Parker, Geo & Joe Groosheim, Joe Gregson, Nic Helfrich, Ignatz Neff. Henry & Leona went to Belleville left Billy [Willis] here. Washed this afternoon, scrubbed basement, washed kettles. Emil came but didn’t stay, we were busy. Mr. Herbert looked at horse. Emil came over, again this eve. awhile; he told us Louie Gregson was ill; Alf. Eckert upset his dodge Sun. eve. by Belleville. Otto Koch’s girl Erma is missing since Sun. nite, got the fellow down in Chester, but he didn’t talk up yet; she is from Red Bud.

Monday, Nov. 29, 1937

Henry & family & Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary & we each butchered 1 hog here, 179 lbs. & 168 lbs. – 170 lbs.; had lunch, dinner & supper. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] helped also. Emil came over awhile. Aug. Grahlerr Mrs. Joe Watchels father died will be buried Wed. morning at Hecker. We got 8½ for hogs today. Schmidt brought sack feed & articles down.
