Henry stopped in got crushing done. Bert [Bertille] baked cream pie. Rose [Rosalia] brought qt. milk last nite. Mr. John Horn of here died this morn. at 7 o’clock, we seen Quernheim’s come out to get him. Wm. Ganley came on business. We & Emil went out to Henry’s this afternoon. Hess & Cleveland helped yet to cut corn fodder for chop for feed; we had supper there. This eve. we went to Rob. Lauts; Rob & pap lost every game pinochle but 1; had popcorn, coffee cake, wine; seen the plans for Rob’s new house 28 x 32 its going to be. Tonite is Pres. birthday balls some places. Masquerade at Floraville.

Warmer today, south wind 43 [degrees] at 3: pm. The electric power was shut of [sic] for awhile, over 1 hr; trouble at the quarry. Steve Stiffler of Paderborn was here looking at the horses, pap worked them for him, drove around with the wagon. Miss Mary I James of Waterloo passed away 1 day last week. The paper also says that the familes [sic] of Otto Geodelle & Matt Crowe moved there household furniture to St. Lous, were they will now live. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] & Henry & family came this eve. Mrs. Orlet is in Belleville hospital, alfoull [sic] weak, has gall trouble, & something wrong with eye since last Wed.

Not so cold today; tonite is to be 18. The Belleville Savings bank of East M. St. was closed this morn; $1,000.00 shortage the cashier Wueller [unclear]. Mrs. Porter the first lady in Ill. to be electrocuted is to die, after midnight at Menard for killed her brother for Ins. Money; also the fellow what she had to help her, will also die. The Holy Name Society of Red Bud is sponsoring a card party to nite, with $5. Attendance prize, we didn’t go, its to cold. Major Bowes program surely was good tonite. Bert [Bertille] paid $1.47 – 18 hrs. electric.

Cold. Boy! Its 6 above radio says. E. St. Louis was 4 & at St. Louis 2 above. in Minnesota 22 below. Bert [Bertille] baked cake, stitching etc. Aunt Mary’s birthday. Bert called & congratulation. Uncle Fred was working in the woods all morn.

Pretty cold. 18 above this morn. Order of Chicago Mail, cotton & goods etc came today. Leona send in a card to Susie, WTMO to sing for Aunt Mary’s birthday Wed; they sang it Mon. eve we didn’t hear it; had company then. It’s been so windy & snowing.

Washed. Raining & snowing; windy, rained nearly all nite. Cleaned chicken house; barn this afternoon. Mildred Watchel was around for news. John Braun & Guker oil agents were here again, wanted to sign the lease, we didn’t yet so far.

Rain this afternoon. Awful fog this morn. Levi Gregson came paid for his 2 hogs. $39.40. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary, Leo & Rose [Rosalia] were all here for dinner. A. Mary went to Sodality Meeting & church this afternoon. Rules by the bishoff [sic – bishop] were read in all church this morn, Sat. nite dances forbidden, no intoxicating drinks at parties & pinics [sic], but a card party & pinics [sic] may be held but less frequently. Collection for school this morn. Levi Gregson’s & Joe’s, Lee & girl friend were all by Emil lately.

Pap got haircut. Henry stopped in got crushing done. Eggs 16 [cents] now. Henry told us Fr. Freund of Belleville, ran over a man & killed him at Belleville last Thurs. nite; he had to appear at inquest.
Friday, Jan. 21, 1938
Pap went to Red Bud took 443 lbs. clover seed to Schrieber’s. for 8 1/2 [cents]. Melvin Wagner has the measles, got a sign up, Osies Neff’s, Weigands, Geodelle’s, Klotz’s kids all have them now. Bert [Bertille] send an order to Chicago Mail Or; one to Si & Freckles at Quincy, describing Hecker; one to Ohio to a Oxydol Advertisment [sic]. A fellow here to see about clover seed again. Myrtle Neff is pretty sick.

Raining all day; Pap went to Smithton this morn; Henry came up, he wanted pap to go along to see Ed. Heap at Smithton, he met him up there then. They also went to Corner’s by Paderborn. Pap went to Red Bud this afternoon took sample of clover seed, he bump it for 8 1/2 [cents] lb. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] 1st yr. wedding anniversary today, didn’t get there, roads muddy.
