Cloudy & colder this morning. Some spring day. Papa went out to Henry’s sowing oats; finished 38 acres; had dinner there. Dyed Bertie’s coat this afternoon navy blue. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up, Bertie & her went to the quilting, City Hall Firemen’s quilt; 3 of them, Clara Wagner & O. Lauts & Mrs. Kessler’s & L. Boll & Mrs. Ahrens; lot ladies helping to quilt, day & night. There was a terrible sand storm in southern states, all blowing over this way now, cloudy & hazy; here smoky. Eggs 17¢.

Making a star quilt out of scraps; Mrs. Phillip Kahmer of Fords Corner is getting buried this afternoon. Pretty cold weather again. Leona said she planted out cabbage plants yesterday & not very nice today for them; We got out sweet potatoes in the hot bed. Miss Lizzie Boll was the lucky one to win the quilt that was raffled at the euchre Tues. night. Joe Griffin got attendance prize. Casper Horshmann living on Barney Kaiser’s farm is awful bad sick at present; We received a letter from Alice, says raining there, flower are blooming, everything looks so nice; we sent her a letter today. Eggs 18¢, we shipped 19 hens, 123 lbs. over to St. Louis with Mertz & got 16½¢ lb; they lost 1 lb. going over, some weighed 7½-9 lbs; surely were & nice fat. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came , we all went to McDermotts, to see Margaret, she sure was laid out nice, pink dress, had so many beautiful flowers & so many cards for masses to be read for her; quite a few people came to the house, it was packed. Mrs. McDermott isn’t so good. Gertie Irose is getting along fine, since she was operated. Margaret – she was so weak of blood, they even took Ruth’s blood, but it didn’t help, they checked, Hubert also, both listed good.

There is telephone general election this afternoon, we heard, Mrs. Dueker has an application in for the board, & 2 others, but old officers & Liz Boll were reelected. There is a sale at the Public School, old chairs & benches, school desks, piano Wm. Birkner got for $2.25 to make butchering table. Rob Laut got hay. Mr. & Mrs. Steve Rennecker, Mr. & Mrs. Joe Watchel & son & Mr. & Mrs. Rob. Laut & son, were visiting here this evening, the men enjoyed in a solo game & ladies pinochle; what a time. Mrs. Watchel held 1500 trumps in diamonds. Miss Edith Klinckhadt is employed as wash maid at Roy Staufenbiel. All getting along O.K.

We took our turnips in. Bernice Wagner got ½ doz. eggs. Papa hauled 2 loads wood. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary & Josie Keller gave us a short call, then they all left for St. Louis; 500 3 Christy Ave. she took eggs along, she also went down & gave Lizzie Boll a call. The St. Patricks church of Tiptown is giving a fish fry & shooting match tonight at Oak Grove; we went , but didn’t win any; had a dance also, Adm 25. AuBchons [sic] Orc. played. We stoped [sic] at Henry’s.

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were up, took turnips & radishes out of garden. Henry was up, looking for some one to butcher his bulls. He got George Boll to do it, started this morning. Papa & Rosalia went out had dinner there. Brought 13½ lbs. along @ 12½¢ -14¢, Rosalia went along around town with him, sold nearly all he had, along.

Went to mass at 7 at Waterloo; stopped by Lizzie Boll & by Henry’s, took Leona along to church, stopped awhile by Mrs. Geodelle.

We planted trees & rose bushes. It rained last night & again this afternoon & evening. Papa took Chev. to Probst got oil changed 24827 mi. & gas & tail light fixed. We went to the euchre this evening; didn’t win, had 7 points all of us. Lee Gregson got attendance prize $1.00. Lizzie Boll was first in bluey, & Mrs. Jatho in Euchre, not a very large crowd, 10 tables euchre. Mr. & Mrs. George Boll brought there butter beans & eggs here for Mehrmann, Laut’s or Wagner’s weren’t at home. Eggs 22¢ today.
Monday, Sept. 17, 1934
We washed, ironed. Henry, Leona & Billy were up had dinner, Papa & Henry went down to School House got there corn & hog checks, Henry got a $90. check, & papa $43. & $2.40 from Ed. Pabst contract, but it is not all straightened out yet. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where up, she & Berti went to see Mrs. Staufenbiel. Papa & Rosi went to Red Bud, wanted to get oil changed but it is all o.k. also wanted for all paper, but couldn’t get none; brought some home made liver sausage along all had supper here. Gus Klotz brought lime dust spreader home here again. Manier’s had a fish fry & dance Sat. night, selling fill all day yesterday 15¢; didn’t have much of a crowd. Mr. George Schilling & Ben left last Tues. for Indiana to see the sisters come back last night, Sister Brunslava, one that used to be a sister in the Hecker Schools, several years ago send a pin with them Lizzie Boll; she surely was happy about it.

Christ Buehler’s stopped in yesterday & brought Rose’veil back again, Irene used it. We washed, ironed, & awful hot again today. Hugo Probst got our car took it to his garage, to fix up. Henry Birkner’s birthday. Mrs. Karl Boll’s Henry came to cut hay this afternoon, didn’t cut much, it rained, he had lunch here. It rained way more in Athens & around then it did here. Eggs 11¢. Cowboy Jack gave a dance in Kammler’s Hall last nite. 3 couples there, gave it up & went back to St. Louis again, we heard, never will come out to Hecker to give a dance again.
