Homecoming at Belleville. We went in this afternoon to church. Free dance at Oak Grove, & Double birthday at Pautler’s. Adm. gents 25 ladies free. Moonlight Orc. Jac. Reheis birthday today. Henry & family came up this evening; fixed hair & etc.
Thursday, Sept. 5, 1935
Aaron Papenberg’s 22 yr. birthday today. Leona brought Henry up & he couldn’t get the tractor started all morning, so he got Hugo Probst to fix it for him, started right away then. Papa is hauling coal 2 loads for basement & 1 nut coal for brooder stove .05¢; this morning; finished hauled 182 bus. including 12 bus. nut coal @ 5¢ the others 8½ & tax all $15.53 from the East Side coal mine at Freeburg. Henry finished plowing, took the tractor along home; had lunch, dinner. Papa hauled 2 loads wood from Pabsts – 60¢ paid for sawing. Mr. Ed Meng got a light stroke yesterday morning seated in a rocking chair, had the doctor, was better again now. Sterling circus in Waterloo this afternoon & evening porformances [sic] Adm. 25¢; We went in this evening, & crowd just picked reserved seats 10¢ extra, chairs & Boy it sure was good; flying trapeze, elephants & horse dance etc, big band, 3 different side shows at 10¢ Adm; littlest mother & baby. Wild west, 500 lbs. boy, a girl with thousand eyes & so much; a girl lyed [sic] down & elephant walked over her, Monkey, dogs & baby elephant etc.

Rose is 24 yrs old; Henry & family came, rest went home, kids went to school & Henry is plowing; had lunch & dinner & supper. Papa is hauling coal 3 loads this morning; & 1 this afternoon. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came this evening, had supper here then went to the apple peeling at Hy. Birkner’s. Leona & kids came this evening, stayed awhile, had cake & wine. We received a book of 5 chances to win a V. 8 Ford at Dupo on the 14; church pinic [sic].

Henry came, cutting hay, had lunch, dinner chick soup. Mrs. Lawrence Matthews is having a birthday dance at Pautler’s tonite, ladies free, Gents 25¢ Cowboy Orch. We went, stopped at Henry’s, then went to Pautler’s; not so much of a crowd.
Tuesday, Aug. 13, 1935
Papa went out to Henry’s, digging potatoes this morning. Richard Crowe was also helping, he is 15 yrs. old today. We washed, ironed, had spring chicken dinner. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were up. Henry came took the hay that was no good out of the barn & cut alalfa [sic – alfalfa], all had lunch here. Leona & kids came up & got him with the car. Clara Wagner & kids were over, George went to the Firemen’s meeting. Arthur Kuhns of Floraville had a accident Sun. nite, with a oil truck, had his arm torned [sic] open pretty bad had stitches in it by the Dr.

Billy [Willis] 2 yr. birthday. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary, stopped on their way to Adam Eckert’s threshing. Nice cool this morning. Papa & Rose went out to Henry’s, look at the wheat; Leona hauled some of got 81¢ at Waterloo, it is 86¢. The boss timber man was here. Clerk Al Gaven got a 13 lb. ham, 35¢ this afternoon. At the prize dance at Oak Grove last Sat. night Jim Tobin & Leona Vogt won the prize waltz $2.50 & all a fox trot prize of $2.50 was won by Eugene Flym of Burskville & girl of Evansville. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came here from threshing. We went out to Henry’s. Billy’s birthday, took 10¢ ice along & made 1½ ice cream; us & Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were the only ones there.

We canned 12 qts peaches this morning, went to Belleville this afternoon. Buehler’s are threshing again, awful warm. We went to Pautlers tonite, Osie & Bill Matzenbacher’s birthday dance, nice crowd, Moonlighter Orc. Adm. gents 25 ladies free.

We peeled peaches & canned 4 qts this morning. It rained again nearly all day. A fellow from Belleville was here, wanted to sell limestone, for Columbia & Valmeyer quarries. Mrs. Cleveland’s birthday. The timber guy from St. Louis, came brought the check for the piling they cut Fri. & Sat. 868 ft. @3½¢. $30.38; it is the Manassa Timber Company. Clara Wagner & kids came over this evening awhile.

Predigar is being buried at New Athens Catholic church & cemetery from the home of his grandmother Weber’s. Steve Renneckers Agnes Gregson’s birthdays today. We went berry picking after lunch got about 7 gallon’s; gave some to Henry’s & Aunt Mary. had dinner at Henry’s. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were up, had lunch here. We canned 2 qts berries & made the rest in jelly. Rose & Bert went to Mamie’s this evening, went sightseeing through town. Ivo Buehler was brought home from the hospital today, is pretty good.

Went to Red Bud. Rain all morning. Anton Jaeger of Waterloo, mail carriers dad died at the Hospital, was operated for a growth on the bowels, & was pretty bad. We went to Ruma to see Simpson. Renneckers came over this evening. Wagners are having double birthday celebration, Chas. & Melvin, both this week, all relation were there, about 55 people in all, some houseful; for supper. Rain again this afternoon & evening.
