Baked cookies & pie. Wolferts tuck of Belleville got the heifer $25.00; he had mule, an traded with Gus Blackburn. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came & Bert [Bertille] went along to New Athens to see quilt show; so many beautiful quilts. at Geigers. Went out to see Mrs. Parker for 1/2 hr. Bert [Bertille] went quilting at Firemen’s this eve & nite. Getting colder.

Saturday, March 11, 1939

Rained last nite. Pap went to barber. We went to Belleville, stopped at Smithton, also at Reisfsneiders farm. Leo & family were also at Belleville, all went to church. A fellow here looking at heifer & horses. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were up last eve. for lent service.

Tuesday, March 7, 1939

Went to Belleville took 2 hogs in 385 lbs. @ $8.05. Washed, ironed, patched; washed sacks. Harms Bros. & stranger hit cars some way in public square here; each had their car tolled in; Chev. down & Harms to Belleville. Aunt Mary & Uncle Fred got card from Manda Reheis, Norman has a radio program every day Station KXOK; send requests to him.

Friday, March 3, 1939

Beautiful day. Boys stayed here & Henry & Leona went to Belleville; took clover seed @ 4 [cents] – 3 20 lbs. all had dinner here. Rob. [Robert] got mail. Bert [Bertille] got a cross & 16 more to sell – @ 25 [cents]; ain’t going to sell any.

Pap sewed clover seed. Emil came got bu. [bushel] potatos [sic]. Went to Belleville this afternoon; lot of people in town.

Thursday, Feb. 23, 1939

Nice day warmer. Pap cleaned barn. Eggs 15 [cents] now. Nic Hess have baby girl, since yesterday. Mary Schaefer Harrison of Belleville have baby boy.

Saturday, Feb. 18, 1939

Went to Waterloo, got feed etc; was going to Neubarth Sale, but that was 3 miles out on mud roads so we didn’t go. Ivo Rapp was taken to Red Bud hospital yesterday eve; got piece wood in his leg. Alma Klotz is taken treatments at Belleville hospital every day. Geo Wagner’s family came this eve we played cards, ladies lost but 1.

Tuesday, Feb. 14, 1939

Valentines Day. Went to Red Bud mass for Pope. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came. Bert [Bertille] went along to New Athens to dentist Dr. Lauter, does pretty good work. Filled 2 teeth for me for $2.00; fixed some for Uncle [Fred] & Aunt [Mary] to $2.00; they went home, came back again this afternoon we went to Belleville, brought clover seed along $2.61 for cleaning 174 lbs. @ 1 1/2 [cents]. Leo & family came this eve. we played 2 games cards etc. Eggs 16 [cents] at one place 15 [cents].

Thursday, Feb. 9, 1939

Fixed gloves this morn. Henry & Leona & Billy [Willis] came, Bert [Bertille] went along to Belleville, he took sweet clover seed along; Bill [Klein] came here awhile this morn. Raining nearly all day. Kenneth Kemp got stuck by Hill’s this afternoon. Werner Kammler pulled him out with truck. Awful bad nite, windy & raining so heavy, thunder.

Sunday, Feb. 5, 1939

Went to mass; took quite awhile had to read a letter from Bischof [sic – Bishop], & read yearly account. Leo & family came took us along to Uncle Freds, had dinner & supper. Bill [Klein] also came in afternoon, took us home. Went to Belleville to play given by St. Mary’s players; Name “Busy Honeymoon.” Steve Orlet was also in it; directed by Fr. Ratterman, & musci [sic] by St. Mary Choir & Glee Club & children was good. Steve Rennecker came here, Gus Edler was out & left money there by him for Uncle Fred. Mrs. Frank Birkner is pretty ill with flu, they don’t let no one in to see her, pretty weak. Named there baby Marlene – Maggie Schaefer & Ben Schilling were the sponsors. Beautiful day warm.
