Sunday, April 10, 1938

Went to first mass, received palms. Enrolled 13 new members to Holy Name Society, now have 39 so far; church lasted from 7:30 till 9:30. Went out to Uncle Freds for dinner & supper, Henry & family & Leo & Rose [Rosalia] were all there. Nice day, warm, & windy.

Saturday, April 9, 1938

Cold snow & froze hard. Warming up this afternoon, Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came, Bert [Bertille] went along to Fauss sale in Waterloo, bought few articles. Bert got chain card to win hankies, came from Mrs. Aselm Hellener of Waterloo; Mr. Wuller of Belleville, brother to the guy, they put in pen shot himself yesterday, so did Fred Papenberg brother in St. Louis.

Raining all day again, & cold to be 30 [degrees] tonite. Bert [Bertille] baked cake, etc. The Plymouth agent was here yesterday New Athens.

Thursday, April 7, 1938

Raining all day. Bert [Bertille] cleaned kitchen, painted coal oil stove etc. Mass Jos. Keller & lady friend came awhile this afternoon, about 1/2 hr. to get 10 doz. eggs. for themselves & friends. Awful ugly weather, suppose to be rain turning to snow & 32 [degrees]. At Chicago had a pretty severe snow storm the last days. In Birmingham Alba. [Alabama] had a cyclone, never heard from Ed Brand.

Wednesday, April 6, 1938

Windy, cloudy, this afternoon. Leona & Billy [Willis] came, we stretched curtains etc. blanket had dinner here. Emil was over awhile, pap caught 6 fish for supper, boy! were they good. Karl Boll plowed a piece of a lot for Rob. Laut, planted some potatoes. They finally got Kammler’s barn moved to Werners lot this morn. accross [sic] hard road, stopped traffic for short awhile. Bert [Bertille] worked garden this evening. Radio says cold with snow tonite & rain, had a light shower this eve.

Tuesday, April 5, 1938

Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt Mary] & Bert [Bertille] went to Mrs. Griffins funeral she was 31 yrs. old. pallbearers were Noel Roscow, Gus Frisch, Wm. Harbaugh; 3 fellows from her side, from Freeburg. Had a Solemn Requeim [sic] Mass; by Aydt, Orlet, & Shoemaker, who gave her the Catholic Instructions. Fr. Aydt had a very nice sermon, church was crowded, buried her at Waterloo cemetery were the twins are also buried; 2 girls. Henry came brought the truck & got his car; got $9.25 for his calf. Steve Stiffler came this eve.

Monday, April 4, 1938

Washed, ironed. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came up this afternoon, Bert [Bertille] helped them plant onions. Eggs 14 [cents] yet. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came Bert [Bertille] went along up to Griffins to see Tillie, she looks natural, dressed in her wedding dress, & so many flowers; & mass cards she has; the Altar Sodality & Holy Name Society recited the rosary this eve; so many people there. Henry came got the truck to haul calf of [sic] tomorrow.

Cold froze hard even the ground. Went to mass. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped in awhile after church. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came down, had dinner & supper here. Roy Staufenbiel’s have baby boy.

Saturday, April 2, 1938

Cold with frost. 34 this morn. Bert [Bertille] made fire in furnace again. Horn’s household goods to be sold at public auction this afternoon the house & lots were sold to Ted Eichenseer $400. last week. Mrs. Hy. Rehling of Waterloo has sale also this afternoon & Ross in Smithton to. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came Bert went along to Smithton to sale but it was nothing, mostly implements etc; then we went to Rehling’s by 2 1/2 mile west of Foster Pond; A. [Aunt] Mary bought box shallot onions for 5 [cents], had so much things to sell. Bert [Bertille] took 10 doz. eggs to town, got 14 [cents]. Mrs. Joe Griffin passed away this afternoon, she has just been home from the hospital about week, but was feeling well; died suddenly this afternoon. It is to be pretty cold tonite, with a killing frost; lowest to be 30.

Friday, April 1, 1938

April Fools. Pap went in woods finished hauling wood. Bert [Bertille] cleaned bedroom, & hall etc. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came, were at Belleville brought a curtain stretcher along for me [Bertille]. Transfer in Waterloo paper of Dav. & Joe. Donahue to Bill Donahue. Huber McDermott is selling the furniture etc. of Catherine McDermott at Log Cabin on 16 Apr.
