Wednesday, May 21, 1930

Today the Bishop comes to Hecker to confirm 37 children.  Bertille went up to church at 6:30 this morning.  Henry, Leona, Mrs. Jake Geodelle were at church too.  Robert, Floyd was here at our house.  They all had breakfast here.  At 9 o’clock we went to church again the Bishop came.  The people were to meet the Bishop at Philip Cortner’s place.  There were quite a few went out with their machine all decorated.  Leona got confirmed today.  Mrs. Jake Geodelle was Sponsor.  There were 14 priests there with the Bishop.  Papa & Rosalia went to Belleville this afternoon.  Eggs are .17¢.  There is going to be a dance at Rapp’s tonight, but we got no invitation so we won’t go.  Miss Bertha Wolf of Belleville is in St. Elizabeth’s Hospital is under surgical attention.  She lives at 414 East Mckinley Street.  Papa & Bertille went out to Henry’s this evening.  Bertille took her first automobile lesson.

Saturday, May 17, 1930

It is raining this morning.  Rosalia went up to church this morning . After church she was going to clean the church (and) Aunt Mary’s place.  But there was no one else there that was supposed to help.  So she came back home & went up in half hour again & there was no one there yet.  So went she came home again, she saw Mrs. Pour going up.  She stopped and told her there was no one there yet.  When they are ready to clean Rosalia has to let Mrs. Pour know.  She is cleaning on Mrs. Willie Braun place.  Rosalia killed a chicken spring for dinner today.  Mr. Ed Parker came this morning, he wanted to sell us some little chicks very reasonable.  Rosalia went up to clean church this afternoon.  Today is Emma Eckert’s birthday.  She is going to seven years old.  Tonight there are barn dances all over.  Adam Braun, Nick Schaefer.  Last Sunday night there was one at Rittemeyers.  There was an awful crowd there.  It rained all day today.  Rosalia took 2 doz. eggs to the store and got .17¢ a dozen.

Wednesday, May 14, 1930

Frank Conkey is to be buried this morning at the Catholic cemetery.  Church at 9 o’clock then to the cemetery.  He just first turned catholic.  Henry was here this morning.  Papa & Rosalia are setting posts.  Bertille baked cookies.  Rosalia was up town, she took 5 dozen eggs & got .18¢ a dozen.  Papa & Rosalia went out in the woods this afternoon.  Aunt Mary came down a little while this evening and then Aunt Mary, Rosalia, Bertille went to church.  George Wagner chopped one of his dead trees out in front of his house this evening.

Saturday, May 10, 1930

Today there is sale up in town, they are selling the post lamps and old lanterns and all such like.  Bertille washed the machine this afternoon.  Rosalia was up town & took the eggs.  She got .19¢ a dozen.  Rosalia & Bertille, Anna & Alvera Braun clean the church this morning.  Lena Meng was over a little while this evening.  She brought Rosalia her dress over.  She took $2.00 to make it.  There is a dance tonite at Adolph Rittemeyers barn.  We heard he made 90 gals. beer for tonight.  It rained this evening.

Today is Josie Gregson’s birthday.  She will be 50 years old.  Rosalia & Bertille washed today.  There was an inquest at Smithton yesterday afternoon for George Heyl.  They pronounced it accident.  There was a dance at Gregson’s this evening.  Some people from their corner were there.  Blackburn and the other bunch were at Sensel’s, there was a dance and birthday there too.  We didn’t have no invitation for either one, so we stayed at home.  Eggs are only .19¢.  Wheat $1.00.

Tuesday, May 6, 1930

Today is Uncle Adam’s birthday.  He is going to be 81 years old.  It is raining again a little this morning.  Rosalia went out to Uncle Fred’s this morning and brought Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary along back with her.  They were here for dinner & two lunches.  Henry & family were all here too for dinner and two lunches.  Papa, Uncle Fred, Henry, dug up the sewer this morning.  It was blocked up but it didn’t come through yet, so they will have to work another day if they didn’t get finished today.  Mr. Hill was over a little while.  Rosalia took 4 doz. eggs to the store & got .19¢ a dozen.

Mr. George Heyl got killed this afternoon.  The way we heard Mr. George Heyl had been to the stockyards and when he was coming home he got killed between Smithton and Hecker in that creek bottom by Grohman’s.  He ran out of gas and went to the neighbor’s house to get some, when coming back a machine struck him and killed him.  There is so many tales out, that you don’t know which was the right.  Henry Gambach found him laying on the road when he came back from St. Louis.

Friday, May 2, 1930

Today is Mrs. Joe Wachtel’s birthday.  Rosalia went up to church this morning.  It rained last night, thundered and lightin’, hail & wind, but it didn’t do no damage as far as I know.  Papa went up to the school this morning again, today he wanted all the men from the congregation to come to help pour cement.  Miss Lela & Ethel Deuker (sp?), the school teachers, took their school children to Fort Chartre yesterday in Lester Gregson’s truck for an outing.  They had wiener roast, ice cream.  There were about 50 children.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were here this afternoon.  Uncle Fred went up to work at the new school.  They stayed at our house for supper.  Bertille went over to Mrs. Frank Birkner this afternoon & brought her some tomato plants from Aunt Mary.  Bertille took 3 dozen eggs to the store, got .20¢ a dozen.

Wednesday, April 30, 1930

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were here today for dinner and supper.   Uncle Fred and Papa worked on the building of the new school today.  Bertille was uptown this morning.  We started painting our chicken house today.  Mrs. Rheinecker was over and looked at our garden a little while this morning.  Mrs. Frank Birkner was over this afternoon to get some tomato plants that Aunt Mary brought up for her.  Aunt Mary & Rosalia, Bertille was over a little while this evening looked at her quilt that she’s got in the frame for Margaret Dudenhoeffer.  Bertille took 4 doz. eggs to the store, got .20¢ a dozen.  She got some cough syrup.  Bertille has an awful bad cough.  Some of the men were hauling the brick for the new school today from Red Bud.  The brick came from Chester and Murphysboro.  Today is Buddy Napiers birthday.  Dorothy called up here and wanted to know if Aunt Mary was up here.  We told her yes.  She invited them to come down there this evening to the dance.  But we are not invited for that.  Frank Birkner’s wife had lunch with us this afternoon.

Monday, April 28, 1930

Uncle Fred is helping to work on the new school.  Aunt Mary was here all day.  Uncle Fred came down here for dinner and supper.  They both ate with us today.  Aunt Mary and Rosalia were sewing a dress.  Henry came up this afternoon to get some sour milk.  Werner Kammler has a new Chevrolet truck.  Today was eclipse of the sun.  Bertille was down at Louis Armstutz this morning and this afternoon, got a dress pattern and returned it again.  Bertille took 4 dozen eggs to the store, got .21¢ this morning and this afternoon, Uncle Fred took 10 dozen there and got .20¢ a dozen.

Thursday, April 24, 1930

Today is Alfreda Wittenauer’s birthday and also Elmer Parker’s.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary have an invitation to come to Parker’s this evening.  There is going to be a dance there.  We are not invited.  Papa, Rosalia went out to Henry’s this morning to get some straw and a few other things.  Bertille went to church.  Uncle Fred & Papa went to Waterloo this afternoon.  They brought souvenirs along for the women.  They gave egg timers and for the men a key knife.  Aunt Mary stayed at our house.  They ate supper with us.  Bertille took 4 dozen eggs to the store and got .21¢ a dozen.  Farther Grootens and Clement Parker was at our house this afternoon.  They wanted a wheelbarrow, but we didn’t have any so they went over to Joe Wachtel and there got one.
