Nice day. Pap went in wood; hauled some together, & brought load home. Bert [Bertille] washed. Went to Wagners quilting this afternoon; Mehrmann came got 6 doz. eggs @ 16 [cents]. Steve Stiffler & Al Gasser were here, looking at the horses again bought them, going to get tomorrow afternoon $135. team. The Catholics got card party in hall tonite; isn’t so cold tonite. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came; Bert [Bertille] went along up to the euchre, but none won a prize Bert [Bertille] had 7, they each 5 points. Mrs. Geo. Grossheim won attendance prize, cake cover; crowd wasn’t to large.

Thursday, Jan. 27, 1938

Not so cold today; tonite is to be 18. The Belleville Savings bank of East M. St. was closed this morn; $1,000.00 shortage the cashier Wueller [unclear]. Mrs. Porter the first lady in Ill. to be electrocuted is to die, after midnight at Menard for killed her brother for Ins. Money; also the fellow what she had to help her, will also die. The Holy Name Society of Red Bud is sponsoring a card party to nite, with $5. Attendance prize, we didn’t go, its to cold. Major Bowes program surely was good tonite. Bert [Bertille] paid $1.47 – 18 hrs. electric.

Sunday, Jan. 16, 1938

Nice day. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped awhile then went home. Levi Gregson came, brought over 2 hogs, wants to butcher on Tues. if its nice. The St. Mary’s Young people of Belleville are having a play this afternoon & eve. Adm. 25 [cents]. Isidore Orlet is also in it as a butler. The Holy Name Sodality of Red Bud is having card party on Jan. 27; & Sewing Circle a lunch & card party Feb. 22. Fr. Spor said. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came down Bert [Bertille] went along to Belleville to St. Mary’s, Young people gave a play, we were by Fr. Joe awhile, he gave us each a gold cross & Leo tie pin; the play was pretty nice, Isd. was in it. Vin James furnished musci [sic], Orch, it was what you call a musical comedy; the hall was filled. The name of the play “Marrying Mirian” directed by Fr. Rabeman.

Tuesday, June 15, 1937

Leona & Billy [Willis] were up for lunch & supper, she got brakes fixed by Probst’s, & we washed & stretched curtains here; she had to go to Ben Heyl’s to get Mrs. Cleveland, she rode up with her. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came went to the lawn & air social & card party. We went up to; started raining; had to play cards in school hall played 8 games. Pap had 5 & Bert [Bertille] 4 got 3 yds. dress good & linen dresser scarf crowd wasn’t so large; weather spoiled everything. A. Mary had & got tablecloth, & dish. Leo & Rose were down at store. not pinic [sic].

Tuesday, Nov. 24, 1936

Quilted, Ironed. Went to Belleville this afternoon. Pap went out to Henry’s about pigs, he sold some for $5 a piece. Hy Burdorf came brought our 5 heifers $210.00. & 3 lbs. beef roast. the firemen have euchre & dance at Kammlers Hall tonite; St.Patricks Church at Tipton have turkey supper & cards at Donahue’s; Waterloo Church has card party in Memorial Hall & also New Athens have card party. We went to the euchre & dance Schmidts played for dance. 8 games were played & little different this time, sit & play with whoever you want, 8 deals to a game; papa got 4 & Bert had 4 didn’t all come out, pap got pitcher milk; Uncle Fred got scarf & lemon squezzer [sic]. Leo got dish play lotto.

Thursday, April 16, 1936

Cool & windy today. Pap went up in woods again had dinner at Henry’s. Rose & Berti went to Waterloo to the colonial Beauty Shoppe got permanents made, all ringlets Frederic & Boy! they sure are pretty, $3.00 waves; there is just 2 girls working there Marg. Davis & Bertha Sauerwein; & are very nice, took 3 hrs. for both of us. Arlene Klotz is as good as can be expected. The Tiptown Parish have a card party in the school hall there tonite; pretty cool for it tonite.

Tuesday, Feb. 25, 1936

Made cottage cheese; Olivia Laut came got 1 pt. & 5¢ milk. Rose & Berti went out to Henry’s washing, not such a nice day, we took our wash along to; ironed some there today. Some guys from Baldwin looked at our horse; Berneice got the mail; Berti got the free song book & picture from the Pinex Co from Chicago Station, Loul [sic – LuLu] Bell & Scoty [sic – Scotty] also on it. Shrove Tues today. Eggs went up again, 22¢ today; over the radio, so many people being killed in auto accidents here of late, there was a police man shot in E. St. Louis a guy with Kenty [Kentucky] license at 4 o clock this eve. The Ausgutus parish, is  having a card pantry tonite; last before lent; Rose & Berti went but didn’t get a thing. Mrs. Levi Gregson got attendance prize.

Thursday, Dec. 26, 1935

We made chicken dinner. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary & Josie Keller of St. Louis was here; for dinner & supper, played cards this afternoon. The Smithon [sic] Catholic parish have a card party in there school hall to nite. Burgdorf of Red Bud got our jersey heifer, this evening $40.00, pretty good.

Thursday, Nov. 21, 1935

Papa went in is hauling corn fodder. The young people’s Sodality of Red Bud has a euchre party tonite in the ball there. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came & Rose & Bert went along to the euchre. Rose had 11 points & played a sleeper for pap; got 2 prizes, 4½ pecans & glass plate; the rest of us got nothing; they played 16 games; & then cash lotto in basement after the card party upstairs. Mrs. Amada [sic – Amanda] Collier got attendance prize, a pair pillow cases. Pap broke the rear axle in the Whip; hauling corn fodder, Probst came down in the field & pulled to the garage, had it repaired $5.60 with labor.

Sunday, April 28, 1935

Went to Red Bud; they made $80. clear at the card party Tues. nite. We went out to Uncle Fred’s for dinner & supper. Mr. John & Sam Krehrer, were also there, looked at implements etc. We went to Pautler at Waterloo tonite, free double birthday dance, musci [sic] by Cowboy’s, nice crowd, there was a wedding dance at Dreamland, Mueller & Shewer Jr. It rained nearly all evening. Ed Fahey said Martin May turned his car over last night at Vanburen’s, 5 in the car, went to Waterloo to get Rose, & going home, car came out Vanburens lane, & collision, May’s car is a total wreck, took Martin to the doctor, man from Renault was driving, Rose has scratches & bruised a little; that is the third car he wrecked in a short time. Mr. Robert Probst is having a dance at Manier’s tonite, musci [sic] by Vogel Bros. Adm. 25¢.
