Had Mertz to look at our chicks, dying, terrible. Pap went to Waterloo took 11 bus. wheat along @ 71 [cents] & paid tax $270.94. Terrible thing happened last nite, Waterloo talking this morn. Gus Buettner of Waterloo shot & killed Miss Hattie Grosse & boyfriend Wetzler all of Waterloo, at a lonely spot on Boxtown road, Wetzler & girlfriend & Mr & Mrs. Mitchell were enroute to Boxtown to a dance, when Buettner crowded them of road & shot & killed the couple & didn’t harm Mitchells so far they haven’t got Buettner yet, he wanted to go with Grosse. All police are on look out for him, he was seen driving south through Boxtown after it happened at 10 o clock. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped in went to Red Bud & worked there gardens today. Went to Leo’s this eve. took them plants & we got cabbage plants from her.

Sunday, May 14, 1939

Went to mass. Had solemn communion, 10 children. Bert [Bertille] got her haircut. Leo & family came this afternoon, also Bill [Klein] all had supper here, we took pictures. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came for free dance at Kammler’s tonite, musci [sic] by Happy Ramblers 2 – had large crowd. Totsch’s also had fish fry & free dance.

Friday, May 12, 1939

Baked cookies, worked garden etc. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped went to Buehler’s & to Red Bud. Seen in paper Wm Reheis of Burksville have baby first born. Leo & family came this eve; brought qt. milk. Marita runs all around.

Tuesday, May 9, 1939

Washed ironed. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up. we planted out some more tomatoes, etc. watermelon pumpkin.

Sunday, May 7, 1939

Went to Red Bud mass. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped awhile. Conner of Paderborn was here wants an old horse. Miss Reickert of Waterloo came, Bert [Bertille] went along showed her where Uncle Freds live; she bought the piece of furniture with drawers from them for $2.50 they paid 10 [cents] at Crook’s sale. Bill [Klein] came this afternoon. There was an accident by John Krehers, cars from Lebanon turned around & Geo. Parker & Muskoff driving Clarence Wittenauers car, smashed into them people from other car were taken to Belleville in Dashners ambulance, Parker & Muskoff never got hurt, but car was pulled to Red Bud to Schrieber’s for repairs; claim was the Lebanon car fault.

Shipped cooped chickens. Went to Red Bud to funeral of Mr. Clemens Schlotmann, wasn’t so large. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up, making garden. We planted out some more tomatoe [sic] plants this eve. Bert [Bertille] painted kitchen chairs & table this afternoon.

Pap went to Waterloo, took wheat along; just 72 [cents]. Went to Kleins this afternoon, they brought 100 W. Wyandottes along from Illmo Hatchery $6.20; we got about 125 out of our hatch, of 240 eggs very poor. we got about 228 chicks now altogether with 10 hens. Oliver Birkner brought sack mash & coop to ship old hens 2 dozen. We painted kitchen floor green this eve.

Wednesday, May 3, 1939

Had beef soup dinner. Pap’s birthday 61 yrs. old. Clemens Schlotmann Sr. of Red Bud died will be buried Fri. morn. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary & pap went down to see him this afternoon, he just had a stroke 10 o’clock yesterday morn. 69 yrs. they went home & came back again for supper; Henry & family & Leo & family & Bill [Klein] were here this eve. Bert [Bertille] put a piece over radio, German Band for a whole set, birthday. Minnie Staufenbiel, was here wants to go along to funeral Fri. at Red Bud. Ralph Wiegand accessor came this eve.

Nice day. Went to Belleville took in 3 hogs. 540 lbs. $6.80. Bert [Bertille] washed & scrubed [sic] dining room, varnished floor. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came for the euchre tonite given by Ladies Aid at church hall.

Washed, ironed, sprayed trees etc. Mauff agent was here. Wittenauers working here. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up working garden, planted out tomatoe plants.
