Went to Leo’s threshing. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary & Leona helped; pap made straw stack; he finished had them for dinner, lunch & machine guys & pitcher for supper; got 714 bus. from 31 acres. & @ 63 [cents]. top price. good wheat & turned out good. Bert [Bertille] went home did feeding. it was 10 o’clock till we got home; worked late to finish.

Saturday, July 1, 1939

Went to Leo’s finished hay at noon; Jac. helped this afternoon working corn; they had thresher meeting last nite, going to start Mon. at 9 if it don’t rain. Pap is helping Wittenauer make hay this afternoon. New Athens got Home Coming today. KMOX stars are out. Emil was over awhile this eve. Geo Schilling started threshing this afternoon at there place.

Friday, June 30, 1939

Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were working up here this morn. Pap went out dug potatoes up in field a bucket full. Henry started combining again, goes alwful [sic] slow so far, mill only pay 50 [cents] for the wheat, wants to ship it to St. Louis now. We went to Orlets this afternoon piled hay & put up some. Today is the last day in quarry for Jac. being put out of a job; etc. only them that need it bad; rest are all laid of. Waterloo paper has this week a $600.00 reward for the finder of the boomber [sic] of Schaefer house.

Cleaned chicken house, pap cut wheat. Went to Leo’s took hog back, & stopped at Jac Neffs longest 4 shoats $18.00. Wittenauers cutting alfalfa today.

Wednesday, June 28, 1939

Nice day. cloudy & little rain this afternoon. Ed Helfrich & Leona Horcher are being married at Columbia today, wedding dance at Pautler’s tonite. Wm Braun was here, signing oil leases for another 3 mons $1. Pap signed again. cut lawn, cut in 16 qts. kraut this morn. Pap went to meeting at Kammlers. Leo & family & Bill [Klein] was here this eve. Leo’s they had heavy rain.

Washed, ironed. Pap dug potatoes. We took onions out Sat. got 1 bu. Rained heavy again no oats cutting are combining today. Henry was here. Ray Braun measuring ground again today. Rain again this eve. heavy also wind with it.

Nice day & warm. Uncle Fred was up working his corn. Pap got haircut. Eggs 13 [cents]. Awful hot today. People are all busy cutting oats & working corn; some combining. Totsch’s here, free dance & fish fry tonite again.

Monday, June 19, 1939

Washed, ironed, patched. Rain pretty much all day, had terrible storm by Klotzs, tore up peach & maple trees a few, wheat shocks all down; 1 field of about 5 acres completely all down. Pap took Whip went to New Athens also Uncle Fred & got bu. boxes. pap hauled 38-1 load & went after another 29 & Uncle had 25 in Chev. & also went for another load. Mauff was here. Mrs. Rennecker came over little while this afternoon, after the rain. Tornado in Minnesota, cleaned out 4 towns 10 dead, 200 injured.

Went to Leo’s all day, lunch, dinner, lunch. Jake helped shock, pap drove binder. Awful hot 92. Marita came along home & stayed all nite.

Thursday, June 15, 1939

Went to Orlet’s this morn. Pap drove binder. Jake had to work in quarry, till noon, then he worked this afternoon; had lunch, dinner. brought Marita along home again. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up this afternoon. We put our berries away got 6 qts.
