Papa made a patch ready to sew turnip seed this morning. Steve Rennecker came over to him a little while. We planted some more pickle & beet seed this morning. The ground goes nice working. Papa sowed the turnip seed this evening. Henry & family were all here this evening, they brought 3 sacks of potatoes up here. Last Monday Valentine Fritche was hit by an automobile. He was going towards St. Louis with a coop of chickens & other things, & not one of his chickens were alive any more. He was thrown 20 ft. from the wagon & his horses were hurt so bad that he had to kill one of them. He is Belleville in the hospital. It happened on the Belleville road by Jake Buehler’s place. His wife wasn’t along because she is in E. St. Louis paralysis. The way we was told. I guess we will hear more about it later on.

Bertille went to church this morning. Papa is spreading lime dust. Rosalia is on the sick list, too much beer last night I guess. There was a machine, the Karr Range Co., they had a victorola in it then those big horns on top of it. They played all kinds of pieces, “Just a Precious Little Thing Called Love.” “I Fall Down and Go Boom,” “Romana.” Bertille took 2 doz. eggs to the store & got .18¢ a doz. The leghorn spring are .17¢. White & Red Rocks are over 2 lbs. .21¢ and under 2 lbs. .18¢. Yesterday the Young People’s League of Hecker had their outing in Rittenmyer’s woods by their clubhouse. It rained awful by Peter Dehns today the way Mrs. Rennecker told Katie Klotz. It just sprinkled a little here. It didn’t amount to anything. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were here a little while this evening, but it started to get cloudy so they went home. They wanted to go to Adam Eckerts yet from here, but I don’t think they did. It is Edmund Eckerts birthday. It rained pretty hard for awhile this evening, thundered & lightning, wind.

We are cooking plum jelly today. Bertille went up town & got some sugar. Papa is spreading lime dust this morning. Kuhns are plowing over at Ed Mengs, they are going to stay another year yet. I guess they will crop our ground again too. Leona, Robert, & Floyd were here this afternoon, she came up & got the milk check. Clarence Pabst was here this afternoon & brought the oats here from down at their place. I saw in the paper that Joe Handrich fainted while out at thrashing, but they called for Dr. Pautler from Waterloo to come out. He is allright again now. They took William Braun to the hospital last Thurs. he got operated on appendicitis, he is as good as can be expected, last Sunday. Papa went to Waterloo last Sun. & got the oil changed in the chev. 10,942 miles. Steve Rennecker came over a little while this evening.

Bertille was up at the store this morning. We heard this morning when Mr. Hill telephoned into Belleville to the News Democrat office that Henry C. Voges died last night at 1:30 a.m. He was over heated from thrashing. He was helping August Voges to thrash and today he was to get them. Peter Dehn, Jr. also had a stroke frm over heated, he was out thrashing too. Henry C. Voges was 63 years old. Mrs. Hill is Aunt over him and August Voges is Uncle. That is where he got over heated. Mr. Steve Rennecker is at home today, so Papa went over a little while now. That isn’t so that Peter Dehn Jr. got a stroke. Old Man Dehn is pretty bad, he can’t move his legs nor his arms.

Rosalia & Bertille washed today. Papa is setting posts. Joe Schilling thrashed 900 bu. wheat today. Rosalia & Bertille went out to Henry’s this evening a little while. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up a little while this evening. Rosalia clipped their necks for them. Uncle Fred, Aunt Mary, Rosalia & Bertille went down to the cemetery to see the Gambach’s graves. They are all decorated with flowers. Eichenseers were also down there. Papa was over at Ed. Mengs and then he came up to the store. The day when Gambach brothers got buried, they say that Father Grootens was also in their church too. On June 27 is also Steve Rennecker’s birthday, the same day the Gambach’s died.

Rosalia & Bertille went out to Uncle Fred’s this morning to pick dewberries. We picked about 2 gallons. We canned 2 gls. today and made the rest is jelly. We took Aunt Mary’s curtains along home and washed them for her. We had lunch out there this morning. Kuhus brothers started cutting wheat in our field this afternoon. Mr. Kuhus is sick in bed with rheumatism. Yesterday was Ike Napiers birthday, but they didn’t have no dance. This evening Kuhus brother-in-law was here and looked at our little leghorn chick. Uncle Fred and Aunt Mary were also here. Papa went out a little while to help Kuhus shock wheat. Pete Wachtel and Louis Armstutz, Uncle Fred helped a little while this evening too. Papa and Uncle Fred went up to the new school this evening to get some benches. Uncle Fred took 2 of them. Aunt Mary, Rosalia, Bertille went over to Mrs. Rennecker. She showed up her garden. They finished fixing the church steeple today.

Leona was up & the kids too. Papa was called on to help work at the new school again today, so he went up & brought 3 benches down here & Leona took one along home with her. When Papa came for dinner he brought 4 benches along for Aunt Mary’s. We washed and ironed, baked bread, patched today. Today Father Schlarman is to be ordained [the] Bishop of Peoria. There is expected to be 300 to 400 priests present & 25,000 people to see the big event. Mrs. Rennecker was over talking to us a little while this evening. Papa dug a few new potatoes this evening. Those that are there are sure nice & large, but there isn’t very many on a hill. Papa didn’t go to work this afternoon. He didn’t feel good. He is so stiff in his legs. Rosalia & Bertille went out to Henry’s this evening. Leona cut our hair. We looked after the horse & colt & mare.

Today is Flag day but I didn’t see very many flags floating. Leona called this morning and wanted to know if one of us could come out there today and watch the kids, her and Henry was going to cultivate corn. So Papa & Rosalia went out. Papa went to Waterloo & Rosalia stayed there, she had dinner there. Papa came home for dinner. After dinner, Papa went to New Athens & Freeburg on business. We have an invitation from Mrs. Cleveland to go to Weber’s barn dance, it is Mrs. Weber’s birthday. I don’t know if we will go yet or not. I seen posters today for Harry Kammlers dance next Saturday, the 28 of June. I noticed in todays Belleville News Democrat that Edward Neff from 19 North Church Street was in the hospital undergoing medical attention. And also that Miss Ester Ida Dalkert had her name analysis. She is from Waterloo, Ill. Miss Irene Roth analyzed it for her. Good many people are cutting wheat already. Steve Rennecker went out shocking for Jake Klein. Henry & family came up this evening & brought Rosalia along back with them, they didn’t get off of the machine because they wanted to go to Waterloo to get their machine, they had theirs in there getting it fixed up in running condition. We stayed at home this evening. George Wagner & Bernice, Charles, Melvin were over here this evening a little while. He came to get a spring chicken for Sunday. We sold him one for .75¢ a piece. He took 1. Afterwards Papa went along with him to see his barn. Ralph Rausch took a motor cycle ride this evening. The motor cop is on the road now. I think he was on Saturday anyway.

It is raining this morning but we sure need it to. Everything is so dry, the garden is just like dying, from heat and no rain. It rained almost all day & nite. Henry & family were over at Uncle Fred’s this afternoon and got some tomato plants to plant out this evening. They came here when they came back but they didn’t get out of the car. Papa was up town twice today. George Wagner & Werner Kammler were here this evening and looked at our little leghorns. Werner would like to buy some, he is going to let us know by tomorrow morning. Louis Millman was also here & looked at them. Today Pete Birkner fixed Steve Rennecker’s chimney for him. Papa asked a few this morning up town if they know of any one wanted to buy leghorn chicks. Bertille baked bread, coffee cake, cookies, today. Rosalia worked in the garden and also planted some flowers out and sowed some lettuce seed in the garden after the rain, so tonight we have some more showers and then it will start to grow.

Rosalia & Bertille washed today and also ironed. Papa fixed some gates this morning and this afternoon. Johnny came and said that Father Grootens said “he should come up and work at the new school today.” So he went up this afternoon. Mrs. Rennecker was over a little while this morning, one of our chickens got over there so she brought it back again. Her brother Valentine Dehn drowned in the river Monday evening. Him and another fellow were trying out a new boat, he was at Belleville Monday and got himself a $160 motor boat. And Monday night him and another fellow went boat riding and they both drowned. His partner they found right away, but they didn’t find him until this morning about 5 o’clock. All the children went down there yesterday afternoon. He is now down at Ellis Grove by his sister Annie. They intend bringing him up to Red Bud in Dasher’s undertaking parlor until Friday afternoon 2 o’clock. Later on Mr. Dehn had intended to take a 700 mile trip down the river to Arkansas.
