Nice day. Went to the funeral of, Tom Crowe at Waterloo, wasn’t very large. Pallbearers were Levi Ganley, Joe Mueth, Fred Reheis, Ben Schilling, Emil Geodelle, Jeff Payne. German band played for a whole bunch of Paderborn. Neff & Karban’s, Cortner’s also for me & Bill Klein, all boys & girls, & said from St. Louis. Alfred May & guy were here this afternoon. We went to Tipton to see Farago. Willie & John Braun were here again for signing & leasing oil ground again. Leo & family & Bill [Klein] came this eve. Bert [Bertille] fixed Roses [Rosalia] hair.

Thursday, Oct. 13, 1938

Beautiful rain last nite, settled dust for awhile. Rob. Payne democratic candidate for clerk was here this eve. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped, went to Red Bud. Harry Wittenauer’s finished sewing wheat here today. Henry & family were up, he got some more wheat to sew; Listened to Major Bowes on radio.

Friday, Nov. 21, 1930

Rosalia went to church this morning.  Papa is fixing fence.  We put clean straw in the chicken houses this afternoon.  There was a boy here this morning, he was deaf & dumb & couldn’t speak a thing.  He had a card and on there it said “he was deaf & should help him out by buying a package of needles for .25¢, so we bought one from him.  I seen in the paper that Jake Frierdichs moved into there new house on the Waterloo & Hecker road this week, & Mr. & Mrs. Jeff Payne moved into the Frierdich’s residence on Morrison Ave. Tuesday and are citizens of Waterloo now.  Mr. & Mrs. O. J. Maul moved from Waterloo to Breezy Hill Wednesday to take charge of the service station there.  A little baby girl arrived at the home of “Bill” Heubner, they now have a boy and a girl.  The two McCarthy’s boys Greg & Kevin & John Cody captured two coons & two opossums for the start of the hunting season.  Joe Watchel is building chicken house & garage on his premises.  The Orbon Stove Works in Belleville are laying quite a few men off from work at present.

Papa and Rosalia went out to Henry’s this afternoon, Henry is sawing wood.  Mr. Jeff Payne and Virginia Alterkruse were married Wednesday, way it states in the paper.  Albert Monike was surprised last Sat. evening, when a number of his friends gathered at this home to join in the celebration of the anniversary of his birthday.  He was 52 years old.  Among those present were: Nick Schaefer, Frances, Rosalia, Lorinda, Maggie, Clarasia, his daughters, Mr. & Mrs. Frank Birkner, Henry Volkman, Robert Probst, George & Clarence Rettinghouse, Jerome and Wilford Cortner, Robert Lippert, Raymond Ambruster, Ed Cortner, Ben Kuhn, August Frisch, Clarence Pabst, August Millman & Roy Kammeron.  The elderly persons played cards while the young folks enjoyed the evening dancing.  The bachelor’s band consisting of harp, accordion & organ furnished the music.  Mail Carrier Schmidt’s niece died at Red Bud of flu.  The store of late Henry Kocchel at Waterloo was sold to Mrs. Lulu Myers who is going to start business as soon as possible.  We found 17 eggs today.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were here this evening.
