Pap went up town to deliver a message with Ivo Buehler to Rose; We went up there this eve. sugar cured there meat, had supper played cards. Fr. came out yet at 9 o clock looking for Isd; he is to start working tomorrow in a furniture Jameison’s at E. St. Louis; he played couple games with us also. Uncle Fred & A. Mary came; Bert went along to Waterloo and business with him, she quilted here all afternoon. Renneckers gave one in to for church, had quilting today & nite. Frische came got oats some of them.
Monday, Feb. 22, 1937
Washington’s Birthday. We went butchering at Orlets, killed 2 pretty big, made summer saussage [sic]; Uncle Fred & A. Mary & Jakes & Isd. helped Pap went out to Henry’s & got block & tackle first this morn. Uncle Fred & A. Mary came here, seen the shed door open & drove up there. Bert was home, we had lunch & dinner there. Isd. got a 1931 Chev. coach. It started in to rain & snow a little this eve. Eggs 20¢.
Sunday, Feb. 21, 1937
Went to Red Bud mass; Aunt Mary came from church had dinner here; Uncle Fred stayed at L. Birkners all day. She went there this afternoon. We went out to Henrys. Bert stayed there & pap went with Henry to Waterloo along with, Burckhardt to Maeystown, to look at cows, so far they didn’t make a trade. Leo & Rose came this eve.; we played pinochle, 3 games.
Friday, Feb. 19, 1937
Pap hauled in straw. Rose came down, helped quilt all day, had dinner here. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came to stayed awhile by Bikners this afternoon, Lena came here last night wanted to get him to come up, but they weren’t home, so she called Frieda to come up last nite. Pap got the mail; not much in the paper, Gilbert Dinan of Ames had twins born Sun; she is formerly Hilda Pretzilk – Franks daughter. The light bill is the same again $1.47 for Jan; same as last month.
Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1937
Leo and Rose came, we went along to funeral sure large, from chapel at Querheim’s to Red Bud church 10 ‘clock high Mass, then to Red Bud cemetery, were he [Omer Schilling] was laid to rest, beside his mother, father & sister. He made a will yr. ago Dec. before he got operated for tonsils, he willed $1,000 for masses for himself, & $1,000 for his father & mother, $60 for poor souls of Hecker, Red Bud & Waterloo; $1,000 for Geo. Schilling; they opened the will yesterday; at Waterloo; the pallbearers were all cousins, George, Chas. Jerome Schilling, & Eugene Reed, Joe Neary, Martha’s husband, Hoeffener, Edna’s husband; beautiful purple coffin & vault, laid out nice, may his soul rest in peace. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary went to L. Birkners, he is pretty ill, thinks his heart is going to stop; called Oscar & Frank this morn, they went down to Chrs. Buehlers now, pretty bad there to Christ is pretty sick. Uncle Fred came stayed all nite. A. Mary stayed at L. Birkner’s tonite.
Tuesday, Feb. 16, 1937
Uncle Fred & Aunt stayed all nite went to L. Birkner again this morn. Pap & Bert went to Waterloo, got egg mash, & to Quernheim’s, pd. Rose furniture table 6 chairs, rocker, l brand. Bert went to Fr. Eschmann got mass card for Omer for $1.00. Uncle Fred, pap, A. Mary, Bert all went to Waterloo to chapel sure lot of peoples came in; to see Omer, he looks so nice, smiles so nice.
Monday, Feb. 15, 1937
Uncle Fred went to L. Birkners & we & A. Mary went out to Henrys butchering 2 pigs. Tonite Leo & Rose & A. Mary us went to Querheim’s to see Omer he is layed [sic] out so nice; they were going to come out Sun; while the rest went to church, he went in bathroom & killed himself with razor blade, cut his throat. Oh My Oh My: poor boy; sure terrible.
Sunday, Feb. 14, 1937
Went to mass. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary went to L. Birkners till this afternoon. Leo & Rose came for dinner & supper. We were putting a quilt in frame & Henry came said Omer [Schilling] was dead, rushed him to the hospital emergency case, Mrs. Noonan of St. Louis called out to Schillings. We went in to Waterloo but he wasn’t there yet.
Sunday, Feb. 7, 1937
Went to Red Bud, took Mr. & Mrs. Chas. Helfrich along; [church] took a little longer, reading the rules for lenten season, starts Wed. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stopped awhile. Leo & Rose came & we went out to Henry’s for dinner & supper; while we were eating dinner Mrs. Manier called & said that Mrs. Frank Dudenhoefer passed away this morn. This evening pap stayed here with the boys & Leo & Rose & Bert went along with Henry & Leona over to St. Louis, to our surprised we found it was Frank that was dead had a stroke this morn. slept awful good last night, was 72 yrs. old he is at the Zieneheim [sic] Funeral Chapel on Chrokee [sic] St. will be buried from there Wed. afternoon between 2 & 3 o clock, out Gravois Road to cemetery; looks good & natural, was sick 2 weeks, we also stopped at Louis Geodelle’s awhile, got home about 12:30, it was so foggy driving over, had to drive slow, seen Val’s wife & brothers & Zulaffs, Lester & Margorete, that’s all that was there. So warm.
